DH has just smashed every single glass we own

... bar the handful that were in the dishwasher.

He was doing some DIY in the kitchen and (don't ask me how) unscrewed the wall mounted kitchen cabinet which holds all of our glasses, including our wedding Waterford Crystal. I wasn't at home at the time but apparently the noise and mess was epic.

No reason for the thread except to to mourn the loss of my lovely crystal wine goblets...

I feel a bit sorry for you both

AdoraBell · 14/10/2022 12:54

It’s really annoying.

We lost every piece of glass and china a few years ago. Had people in doing work and instead of using the right screws for the cabinets they used 2” screws. We loaded up the cabinets and moved onto sorting things in another room. Then we heard a grinding/scrapping noise as the cabinets slid down the wall before falling onto the floor. We’d just received our all our worldly goods after moving overseas.

A week later we found the screws DH had bought for the cupboards in a drawer 😡

Oh no.. oh no.. why did you share that link! I am going to be bankrupt!

I would recommend. I’ve got a set of 6 of the wine glasses already (slightly different design) but am going to get another.

They’re smaller and more delicate than most modern wine glasses but that gives it the vintage vibe. Also moderates my wine consumption, a bit.

Bingobangodrinkacanoftango · 14/10/2022 12:55

I bet he watched them fall in slow motion thinking “well… shit” 😂

Paq · 14/10/2022 12:57

SurferRona · 14/10/2022 12:49

@Paq Im so sorry about the Waterford. It would break my heart if that happened to ours. Hope you are insured and can replace.

Thank you! I don't think I can face insurance, we don't have receipts (gift). We are lucky that we will be able to afford to replace, especially with all the lovely tips from MNers about vintage sites etc.

I was packing up the house after a breakup. A kitchen shelf tipped up as I reached for something and suddenly I was sat in a pile of broken dishes.
Wish I could have had the joy of smashing every last one myself.

I hope you find some gorgeous replacements.

And maybe get your DH a voucher for a trip to a smash room for Xmas Grin

Flakjacketon · 14/10/2022 12:59

My friend's boyfriend installed her kitchen. Middle of night a huge crash. A cupboard had fallen off the wall and hit the sink, denting it badly. And - yes - the cupboard had glasses in.
The relationship lasted for a good few years after this.

Madcats · 14/10/2022 13:04

Ooh the Vintage List (might have to redirect DH there for my Xmas present shopping).

CustardySergeant · 14/10/2022 13:08

FiveShelties · 14/10/2022 11:30

Could be worse, they could have been full wine glasses.

Oh the horror! I hope I don't have nightmares tonight! 😁

BretonBlue · 14/10/2022 13:10

This might make you feel better - the infamous episode of Changing Rooms where Linda Barker’s stupid floating shelf destroyed six grand’s worth of antique teapots, collected over a lifetime:

PerrinAybara · 14/10/2022 13:10

Kitchen cabinet with all my glassware fell off the wall in my previous house. Came home to a floor of broken glass. Lost a lot of souvenir glasses from many years of beer festivals. Amazingly some survived.

I console myself with the thought that at least it happened when we were out and didn't land on a toddler.

Squishedstormtrooper · 14/10/2022 13:11

Oh no I am devastated for you! We have built up a collection of Waterford from gifts over the years. Definitely have a look in the antiquey type shops (for some reason near us they are all on the coast!) and eBay is quite good too.

ginslinger · 14/10/2022 13:13

can you claim on contents insurance?

vera99 · 14/10/2022 13:13

My late dad always used to say that's there's no such thing as an accident just carelessness. Sorry for your loss.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 14/10/2022 13:15

On no!

I hate owning breakable things (dyspraxic and send everything near me flying) so I'd have secretly rejoiced.

It'll be a funny story before you know it!

TheNoodlesIncident · 14/10/2022 13:16

When you do replace your lovely glasses, I'd recommend a sideboard (if you've room). Much less risk of this sort of thing! Stuff still gets broken but it isn't because the cupboard came out the wall. I had a friend whose kitchen cabinets had so many tins in, one of the cupboards came off the wall in the middle of the night. Horribly startling, but at least they didn't lose all their glassware!

ScarlettnotOHara · 14/10/2022 13:17

Aww so sad, look in charity shops I have bought several real crystal glasses including Waterford .

Jesus - that’s like a horror film. Those poor women.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 14/10/2022 13:21

I once went to a fancy wine soiree at my bosses house for his birthday. Knocked 3 champagne glasses off the wine table with my elbow, shattering them on their stone tiles. His wife then informed me they were their wedding crystal 🙈🙈🙈. Luckily, she was really nice about it

HowVeryBizarre · 14/10/2022 13:21

If you didn’t cry you are a better woman than me x

Ponderingwindow · 14/10/2022 13:24

So relieved to find a funny scenario instead of the one I was expecting.

I doubt insurance is a good idea. The Waterford will be expensive, but you have to consider your deductible and that every claim makes you riskier to insure. Estimate the replacement cost to figure out how much you would actually get from the insurance company post deductible before even making a query about coverage.

Chocolatehamper · 14/10/2022 13:24

Oh.My.God! I grew up in Waterford and knew lots of people who worked there - at the Glass Factory as it was known. My brother-in-law was a glassblower and has lots of it around the house. I would be distraught if mine was smashed. Definitely speak to insurance - it would be worth a phone call at least.

Lightningfast · 14/10/2022 13:24

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 14/10/2022 11:29

Ah that is annoying.

I was worried he'd flung them at the wall during a blazing row and I was scurrying on to tell you to get rid of him.

Sadly with an accident you have to out on a tight smile and accept that these things happen. Bloody annoying though!

Yes! This x

BruceAndNosh · 14/10/2022 13:28

Strewth!
How the heck does he manage to walk and talk at the same time if he hasn't got the brains to empty a cabinet before unscrewing it from the wall?

Toastoftheton · 14/10/2022 13:28

Just to say you can pick up Waterford cheap on eBay if you want replacements. We lost some of my parents set and were able to fill it out. Some bargains as crystal isn't really in at the moment.
