DH has just smashed every single glass we own

... bar the handful that were in the dishwasher.

He was doing some DIY in the kitchen and (don't ask me how) unscrewed the wall mounted kitchen cabinet which holds all of our glasses, including our wedding Waterford Crystal. I wasn't at home at the time but apparently the noise and mess was epic.

No reason for the thread except to to mourn the loss of my lovely crystal wine goblets...

My DH has broken quite a few things over the years. When I was pregnant with DD he managed to drop a tray with a load of wedding China on it plus a big jar of particularly delicious olives from Harvey Nicks food dept, all in olive oil which went everywhere along with all the broken china making a massive mess to clear up.
I did the tight smile and stomped off for a dog walk where I made a vow that if the baby was a boy (I don't believe in finding out the sex early, I like surprises) I would pack away all the China and glass I owned and buy a load of Tupperware. Glad I had a DD.

Also a friend once helpfully stacked a load of heavy based tumblers I had bought in the Harrod's sale (which I always washed by hand) into the dishwasher and slammed the door shut, the shelf hadn't been pushed in all the way and the glasses all ricocheted into each other and it was as if someone had gone through them all with a glass cutter. I was left with the heavy bases and separate glass cylinders. It was funny enough I managed to laugh.

I'm amazing at breaking wine glasses, but I can only usually manage 1 at a time, usually washing up or loading the dishwasher (and I stay away from anything expensive)

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/10/2022 13:31

When I was 14 I had a top that had the outside of the sleeves joined by strips of fabric. My parents had friends over for lunch and I was clearing the table after dessert. My sleeve caught on the kitchen door and I dropped about 12 dessert bowls. From her wedding gift posh crockery. That was no longer being made.

She still reminds me sometimes and I'm 55 now.

Oops. Truthfully op, when I first read your title I was expecting it to be from some kind of rage episode!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/10/2022 13:38

Your DH isn't Kwasi Kwarteng by any chance?
I believe he might be a bit miffed and lashing out at things today.

embarrassinglythis · 14/10/2022 13:40

I'm another one this happened to as a child - I had a bad concussion and some cuts and bruises. You're very lucky it didn't come down on you both randomly!

OhSunnyMorning · 14/10/2022 13:45

A bit shit but did how many of then did you use?

We have about 60 cups and glasses combined. We have about 8 on the go at any one time either in use or in the dishwasher.

dottiedodah · 14/10/2022 13:49

E bay your best bet for the Waterford Crystal I reckon . Is he having some wine too or on the naughty step!

WilsonMilson · 14/10/2022 13:53

Phew, I thought this thread was going to be about a violent DH throwing glasses.

Poor you op, I would be gutted if all my crystal ended up in smithereens. It’s only stuff tough, it can be replaced. As long as your daft DH wasn’t hurt or cut in his diy adventures.

The clean up is going to be insane - tiny shards of glass can get everywhere so you’re going to have to be really, really careful.

WilsonMilson · 14/10/2022 13:54

I got some beautiful crystal glasses for a ridiculously cheap price at a charity shop last weekend, so you might want to have a look or replacements in charity shops.

LookItsMeAgain · 14/10/2022 13:55

@Paq - I came on to the thread all geared up to read that it had happened in a fit of rage and ready to tell you to LTB. I'm very grateful that this wasn't the case.

I heard (not sure how accurate this is) that when Waterford Crystal was going through some difficult times back in the late 1980's and 1990's (I think this was the time that it became Waterford Wedgewood) that some of their crafts men and women left the company and helped set up the likes of Galway Crystal and Dublin Crystal, so you may be able to find similar glasses but for a fraction of the prices of Waterford Crystal.

It would break my heart if a treasured wedding gift was damaged so you have my sympathies.

I also remember from a time that I did a tour of the Waterford Crystal plant that they keep the pattern on file so if you can afford to replace them you should be able to get like for like, even if they aren't in production any more.

All of that said, this does give you the opportunity to replace with something that might be more 'your' taste and more affordable to replace should your DH be taken with a need to redecorate or remodel. 😉

acrimoniousone · 14/10/2022 14:07

I volunteered in a charity shop for a while and managed to take out two whole shelves of crystal and glass with the long bit of a Henry. Took a while to live that one down but they got over it, I am expecting the same will apply to DH!

Losing anything with emotional value is always awful, but at the risk of being infuriating it is just stuff.

Kennykenkencat · 14/10/2022 14:14

Puts me in mind of the Changing Rooms episode with the homeowners prize tea pot collection

unsync · 14/10/2022 14:15

Meh, can't put lead crystal in the dishwasher so at least now you can get some that don't need handwashing.

Paq · 14/10/2022 11:32

He is excellent at DIY but occasionally slapdash. He has no one else to blame because he installed the kitchen himself 12 years ago, and cant believe he installed a wall mounted cupboard only held up by two screws.

Yes, tight smile, "it's only stuff", wine tonight (out of coffee cups).

OP, get him to empty and check the other cupboards...just in case.
You wouldn't want to be under one if it "let go".
Shock

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 14/10/2022 14:21

Probz would have been better taking the glasses out before unscrewing the cabinet.

Sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Sad

(Sorry, only jokin! SmileSorry to hear what's happened, and especially with your wedding stuff being wrecked!!!)

OH. MY. GOD!!! Do you remember that episode??? Silly question because of course you do as you've just posted about it!!
The designer, Linda whatsherface thought this would be a great way to show off the tea pot collection (some were really rare) and then the wires holding the shelves up weren't strong enough for the weight of all of the pots and CRASHHHHHHHH!!!!

I still think of that episode any time I see that type of shelving any where.

Gemmanorthdevon · 14/10/2022 14:33

Oh God love him...Sounds like my Hubby! ..Does he have a worn out brown Teddy bear and has he ever lost his watch in a turkey?!

DillDanding · 14/10/2022 14:35

We were given loads of Waterford crystal when we were married in 1995. Wine, whiskey, tumblers, flutes, carafes - we had so much.

Now we have 2 whiskey glasses left 😂

ohsuzannah · 14/10/2022 14:39

Oh but your wedding present 😢

mast0650 · 14/10/2022 14:46

Oh no! I assume he's OK? Could have been nasty.

BananaCocktails · 14/10/2022 14:47

Get over it ..

caringcarer · 14/10/2022 14:49

He had better buy you good wine to put in your few remaining glasses then, to calm you.

Ah - OP I do feel for you. But a previous poster whom I cannot find said try going to the factory shop. I have some Cumbria Crystal ( lots broken over 28 years ) - can't make a set of anything ) but their seconds shop is brilliant . Some of mine ( I had most from there - I defy anyone to see how it is a second but much cheaper.
