DH has just smashed every single glass we own

... bar the handful that were in the dishwasher.

He was doing some DIY in the kitchen and (don't ask me how) unscrewed the wall mounted kitchen cabinet which holds all of our glasses, including our wedding Waterford Crystal. I wasn't at home at the time but apparently the noise and mess was epic.

No reason for the thread except to to mourn the loss of my lovely crystal wine goblets...

Do you have accidental damage on your contents insurance?

dadadeedadada · 14/10/2022 11:53

I'd be glad I wasn't there when it happened. At least you didn't have to join the clean up operation! Seriously though, wear something on your feet in there for at least 4 weeks. Those splinters of glass are bastards.

SeatonCarew · 14/10/2022 11:53

Sorry this happened. ☹️

See if you can replace any on ebay OP.

I love treasure hunting missions to replace old favourites. You can set up a permanent search to flag up when things are posted.

Chdjdn · 14/10/2022 11:54

When we moved house 3 years ago DH a managed to smash all our wine glasses that I’d collected over years and even though I’m not normally sentimental about things like that I still feel a bit sad

Buteverythingsfine · 14/10/2022 11:54

I was about seven, downstairs by myself when a kitchen cupboard just fell off the wall and all the plates/cups threw themselves out and smashed. I'd forgotten til I read and now I've remembered how frightening it was.

I know it's a shame about the glasses, it really is, just try to think though that it's great he wasn't hurt when the thing fell, and didn't cut himself on the glass. Obviously through gritted teeth.

Make it a project to replace the wedding stuff with new stuff you love over the coming years.

gemloving · 14/10/2022 11:54

Did anyone expect a different story?

I'm sorry OP, that's very sad.

TottersBlankly · 14/10/2022 11:55

Oh, that’s sad!

(I once broke three of my parents’ precious, rarely used, wedding gift sherry glasses, washing up after a dinner party. Took me days to confess.)

Anyway, you’ll need more! Here you go:

Happy shopping. Flowers

We had a beautiful toaster for a wedding present. DH ruined it by attempting to make cheese on toast in it. So annoying as could not find the exact model to replace it.

Relieved this thread is about an accident and not a fit of temper.

evilharpy · 14/10/2022 11:55

Much sympathy! I'm very attached to some of our glasses including some antique crystal champagne coupes that would be impossible to replace.

There are some lovely glasses on offer from Galway Crystal. I'm tempted by a few of them.

NamelessBaby1 · 14/10/2022 11:55

My dad did this years ago although not really his fault (had lots of visitors, all the "good" glasses were on a tray, someone bumped into him and down they all went onto the kitchen tiles). Took mum a long time to get over it lol and never had a nice set again until recently 🤣

Queenofheart · 14/10/2022 11:57

FiveShelties · 14/10/2022 11:30

Could be worse, they could have been full wine glasses.

😂😂😂😂😂

Yes. The one I expected to read would have been a lot worse so at least there's that, eh OP?

Whyareblokesonhere · 14/10/2022 11:57

Saw a member of staff in tyrell and green (John Lewis) years ago drop the stopper from a decanter as they took it off the top shelf, went straight through four or five glass shelves, all had full glass sets on display, it must have been thousands of pounds worth and the noise was something else, started quite small but distinctive glass break, pretty much everyone turned round just to see the whole lot go, except one thing - the decanter the assistant had picked up so this poor woman was stood holding this thing on a small step ladder whilst everyone was staring at her, I'd have been mortified

BamBamBilla · 14/10/2022 12:02

What was he trying to do?

Paq · 14/10/2022 12:04

Donotgogentle · 14/10/2022 11:38

Couldn’t some unwanted gifts have got destroyed in the accident too?

Silver linings and everything?

😁 I'm pretty ruthless with stuff that doesn't "spark joy" but that's not a bad idea!

sweetgingercat · 14/10/2022 12:04

That's most unfortunate! Looking on the bright side though, in arguments you can remind him of this FOREVER...

queenMab99 · 14/10/2022 12:04

I once heard my next door neighbour wailing in her kitchen with the door open, after her son broke a special jug. It sounded so ridiculous, 'my jug, my beautiful jug!' over and over again, that it comes to mind every time something of mine gets broken. It just stops me from wallowing over things that don't matter.

chatw0o0 · 14/10/2022 12:05

Currently looking at the the tumblers with stars design, just lovely! (and cursing our robust yet boring Ikea glasses).

Hilarymantelspencilsharpener · 14/10/2022 12:06

That's a shame op. Will you be able to replace the Waterford crystal ones like for like? So much beautiful glassware out there - happy hunting.

We once broke 3 Baccarat champagne flutes in one night. It was a very good night, but I do regret the glassware!

Random789 · 14/10/2022 12:08

Phew! So glad I clicked into this thread. I'd been eyeing it in Active Convos and imagining a toxic display of rage. Was feeling all twisty and angry about it.

Glad to hear it was just an epic DIY failure!

PinkHeadphones · 14/10/2022 12:09

I'm imagining him saying "brace yourself, Rodney..."
My crystal wineglasses are one of my favourite things in the whole house so I feel your pain.

Paq · 14/10/2022 12:09

Very sorry to hear about all the precious things lost. Wall hung kitchen cupboards seem to be notoriously fickle!

DH was installing an under cupboard light and needed to thread through the power.

We will shop to replace the nice things eventually - maybe January sales - but make do with Asda replacements in the meantime.

@Whyareblokesonhere that sounds epic! I was in B&Q when a head height display of about 50 ironing boards started to fall. I managed to grab onto the (inadequate) bar that was holding them on the shelf but then I was stuck for ages shouting "help" from the furthest corner of a near empty store on a Friday night hoping someone would come and save me. If I had moved I would have been flattened (pun intended).

I was given a beautiful Waterford crystal vase for my 21st birthday, it was something I'd really treasured and it had like a pink marbled effect paint running through it. Bearing in mind I'm now in my 50s and had looked after it well - DH decided it looked dusty and put it in the dishwasher Shock it took all the paint out and cracked the glass. He looked at the vase, looked at me and very sensibly ran....

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 14/10/2022 12:10

DH and I were so happy when, after 4 years of marriage, we bought our new home. We had a pretty china cabinet in the living room and we put all our lovely wedding china and Dartford glasses in it the day we moved in. That night we heard a sound of breaking glass but decided that it was because we were near the main road and hearing noise we wouldn't have heard before.

The next morning we went downstairs and the glass shelves had broken under the weight of the china smashing the dinner service and all the glasses. No one to blame, just an accident. Although it was precious to us it wasn't hugely valuable.

Can you claim on insurance?

AlanThePig · 14/10/2022 12:10

If any of you are ever around Stoke way head to World of Wedgwood at Barlaston. They own Waterford and have a fair bit of it in the factory shop at very reasonable prices.
DS bought himself a lovely decanter and whisky glasses for under £50 last year.
