DH has just smashed every single glass we own

... bar the handful that were in the dishwasher.

He was doing some DIY in the kitchen and (don't ask me how) unscrewed the wall mounted kitchen cabinet which holds all of our glasses, including our wedding Waterford Crystal. I wasn't at home at the time but apparently the noise and mess was epic.

No reason for the thread except to to mourn the loss of my lovely crystal wine goblets...

That's most unfortunate! Looking on the bright side though, in arguments you can remind him of this FOREVER...

This is the latest in MANY 😁but unfortunately I have also had epic clumsy moments (joys of a long marriage)...

I’m surprised the cupboard stayed up that long. 2 screws — what was he thinking ????
Sad about your glassware but at least no one was injured, imagine if that’d crashed onto a person or pet 😳

MarshaBradyo · 14/10/2022 12:11

We bought six vintage wine glasses from a tiny shop in Paris and dh has managed to break five of them 😫

Ive said the last one represents the marriage so be careful..

gannett · 14/10/2022 12:14

With all that broken glass getting everywhere I'd be thinking that at least having to clear it all up would have been an appropriate punishment.

thesandwich · 14/10/2022 11:31

Insurance?

The excess you have to pay, plus an increase in premiums would only make this worth doing if it was very expensive glass.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/10/2022 12:18

My sister had a cupboard full of Denny crockery, given by her SIL as a wedding present. They had a new kitchen fitted and came home from holiday to find it has fallen off the wall.

TheArtfulStodger · 14/10/2022 12:20

That's one heck of a large sacrifice to the Mayan gods.

That's how I deal with all cup and crockery related breakages since learning that tidbit of historical info. Genuinely makes me feel better. Genuinely. Even. That. Beautiful. Ceramic. Japanese. Spoon. From. My. Childhood. Honest...

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 14/10/2022 12:20

Love the comment that at least they weren't full. But also glad he is OK. No injuries to prevent him reaching for his debit card to fund your shopping trip for new glasses then...

ChiaraRimini · 14/10/2022 12:22

TK Maxx is brilliant for posh glassware and other stuff. Sorry for your loss OP!

FadedRed · 14/10/2022 12:23

Oh what a shame! I love Crystal too, and have some precious Wedding present Waterford. I also have a large amount of other crystal glasses, bought at auction or antiques centres for ridiculously small amounts of money, which we use a lot and throughly enjoy using. Try your local auction house and antiques shops for replacements, Waterford is more expensive (though still cheap compared to new) but other crystal can be really cheap, often having been ‘kept for best’ or on show in a cabinet and barely used.

dawngreen · 14/10/2022 12:23

You can consider your wine glass full. I expected another abused and get rid post. But you still have the great family with husband, so whats a few glasses broken? Money and memories will help too.

KeyboardBotherer · 14/10/2022 12:25

Very relieved to open thread and realize this was a (stupid) accident rather than domestic violence. Enjoy your mug-wine tonight.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 14/10/2022 12:26

you can find edinburgh and waterford crystal on ebay etc not cheaper but muchcheaper than new often in boxes
I see this sort of stuff on ebay sold somewaterford 2 days ago but currently only have a few bits of crystal drinkware

Beebumble2 · 14/10/2022 12:27

I feel your pain, years ago DH and Friend ( both architects) put up a shelving unit in an alcove. On it held glassware and wedding China.
They then took themselves off to the pub for a well earned pint. 10 mins later I heard a great crash onto the stone floor!

Ostryga · 14/10/2022 12:31

I still mourn the gorgeous set of wine glasses I had on my dresser. I came home after a few sherries and banged into it and they all fell off and smashed into a million pieces 😭

Never been able to find them since and wine never tastes as good out of any other glass.

hoorayandupsherises · 14/10/2022 12:32

He could get a job on Changing Rooms 😬

BeanStew22 · 14/10/2022 12:33

AryaStarkWolf · 14/10/2022 11:51

Rest In Pieces 😪

😂😂😂

I did the same myself last year (not glasses, every plate & bowl I own … while clearing the space before builders came 😭)

Sorry to hear about the wedding present - might be worth setting up an alert on eBay to replace that specific item (I know it’s not the same but you might get a match at some point)

alloalloallo · 14/10/2022 12:34

I feel your pain too

My DD has Tourette’s and one day she got stuck in a tic loop and smashed every glass we own on the kitchen floor, including the last 2 remaining Waterford wine glasses we were given as a wedding present 20 odd years ago.

Clearing it up was an absolute nightmare, broken glass everywhere and we were finding bits of it for weeks.

She’s also worked her way through a nice crockery set we were given for our 10 year wedding anniversary

We only have plastic cups now.

Madcats · 14/10/2022 12:38

Was just popping on to say that you can often get Riedel glasses in TK Maxx. I've not seen Waterford.

You might be able to find Waterford replacements on Ebay.

I had a swing top bottle of water "explode" in a freezer drawer over the summer, and disintegrate into tiny shards, I can't begin to imagine the mess you DH had to clear up.

I suggest you wear slippers or shoes indoors for the next month!

warofthemonstertrucks · 14/10/2022 12:39

We had a house fire recently and lost well everything really. The only things I was really upset by were the kids baby clothes, the sentimental Christmas decorations and my lovely vintage set of posh wine glasses that had been a present from my friends for my 30th birthday. I will never get over them!

Tell him to get down to majestic and buy ALL the wine.

And then get shopping. I'm eyeing some up in Oliver Bonas! (Could I be anymore mumsnet)

Elliania · 14/10/2022 12:41

This happened to my Dad; he was dusting the top glass shelf full of Mum's Lladro when it came loose from the wall (working theory was the decorator also a family member so really awkward) and crashed down onto the bottom glass shelf which was ALSO full of Mum's Lladro including several bits that were very rare.

I've only ever seen my Dad cry twice and that was one of them.

Luckily it ended well, the insurance covered replacements and thanks to EBay Mum was actually able to complete the set which was only half collected when it was broken.

SpeckledlyHen · 14/10/2022 12:41

Oh no.. oh no.. why did you share that link! I am going to be bankrupt!

JudgeJ · 14/10/2022 12:48

thesandwich · 14/10/2022 11:31

Insurance?

Does insurance cover idiots who don't empty a cupboard before unsrcrewing it??

SurferRona · 14/10/2022 12:49

@Paq Im so sorry about the Waterford. It would break my heart if that happened to ours. Hope you are insured and can replace.

JudgeJ · 14/10/2022 12:51

Beefilm · 14/10/2022 11:47

This happened to me once as a child. Reached into a wall hung cupboard for a glass and the whole cupboard came off the wall onto my head. Very little was saved.

These things happen. It's a shame but like another poster I thought you were going to say he had flung them in a rage so things could be worse.

I have a kitchen cupboard where one of the door hinges comes off, regularly, which is why I keep a screwdriver within reach of there!
