I stand corrected. I should have referred to equality 'legislation' rather than 'Act' in my previous comment.

lljkk · 05/10/2022 17:48

help me out, where in Ireland do I search on Airbnb app to find the reviews?

Thenose · 05/10/2022 17:55

It's Kenmare. There's a link a couple of posts above this one.

Thank you ! After reading those comments, I guess I still don't know what to think. But as someone who spent a lot of time this summer as AirBnB houseguests, having to arrive at very specific times is a total pain when you're travelling & can't easily get the timing precise. I am usually a little early not late, btw.

theVeryDesiBritish · 05/10/2022 18:25

I actually followed her from her first post on TT ,I can't believe the world we live in had came to this. Like come on! We need to do better. She is being sued for illness that's gonna kill her eventually. What's next suing cancer patient for riding on public transport? This need to be set right! Big time!.

JemimaTab · 05/10/2022 18:27

This is all very odd. We’re certainly not being given the full story here.

shipwreckedonhighseas · 05/10/2022 18:30

What have you found out about this lady? I'm deeply confused.

ChelseaRobertsofMalibu · 05/10/2022 16:27

But she's correct though. The way PP describes her daughter's response is not empathy. It's heartbreaking that a child has to go through that but it is not in line with the dictionary definition of empathy or hyper empathy

It's in line with emotional distress which can be caused by hyperempathy.

Empathy isn't just about caring, it's about identifying with and sharing another person's distress. Hyperempathy means you feel others' distress very acutely.

bringincrazyback · 05/10/2022 18:45

One of the worst parts of this imo is that Airbnb asked her when she expected her disability to be 'resolved' ... umm she is terminally ill...😡I heard some of Airbnb's responses come from bots and presumably that's how this one came about, but it's inexcusable - as she says herself, their algorithms are awful. For something like that to get sent out to a terminally ill person under any circumstances... I can't even.😡

She seems like a lovely person, too. It's just awful. I've signed her petition.

way to miss the point 🙄

Exactly.

as I said upthread - this won’t be as clear cut as the supposed victim is claiming

There's no way of knowing that, it's pure speculation and I personally think you're being overly cynical.

shipwreckedonhighseas · 05/10/2022 19:10

You don't know what to think?

Why?

I have been disabled for a portion of my life (in childhood). Some people do hate disabled people. I don't know why. Maybe they have an inbuilt belief in karma and wish to pile on what they perceive as a punishment. I don't know. But it's something you generally don't find out until you're disabled. (Many people are super kind though!)

It's audacious in any light. Victim blaming.

hiredandsqueak · 05/10/2022 19:18

@ChelseaRobertsofMalibu My daughter is really badly affected, and that is how she has reacted on occasion. It might not be your experience but it is her experience and the team of professionals involved haven't cast doubt on her diagnosis or responses. It affects every area of her life from what she can read to what she can see on TV to what she hears and sees when out and about. It's not only disabilities that cause her distress, it's wide ranging, it has meant that she couldn't study Geography or History or RE in school and English literature had to be heavily adapted because accounts of natural disasters, wars and any suffering causes her awful distress.

shipwreckedonhighseas · 05/10/2022 19:20

I'm sorry your daughter is in that position and I hope she can make progress.

Of course it would be your responsibility to ensure accommodation was appropriate for her in similar circumstances. It would not be the fault of a disabled person if she was upset.

hiredandsqueak · 05/10/2022 19:30

@shipwreckedonhighseas Exactly that, we know that dd has a problem, dd knows the problem is hers she would be devastated to think she had hurt anyone's feelings. We leave as discreetly as possible with no fuss or comment. We have been dealing with it for years, we have never offended anyone as far as I'm aware. If out as a family one of us would leave with her explaining it away as a sudden onset migraine and we have somebody do a recce before going in anywhere, we manage it as best we can. I'm just as appalled as anyone else that the air bnb owner has been treated so shabbily

shipwreckedonhighseas · 05/10/2022 19:33

hired

I've never heard of the condition before. Is it a kind of trauma/anxiety response? It sounds so difficult to manage.

Because, aside from the AirBnB reviews and counter reviews, people are basing their opinion solely on the pretty extraordinary allegations she's making, and on that basis people here are condemning a very easily identifiable family and AirBnB.

People should absolutely be more cynical about stuff on the Internet. Even, maybe particularly, when someone's telling us a story about being sympathetic and vulnerable.

Sundayscented · 05/10/2022 20:10

Crowdfund - yes!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/10/2022 20:27

I agree, is there any evidence of the court threat other than Jade's TikToks and YouTube account?

WhiteFire · 05/10/2022 20:27

It's all very murky (as in not clear)

I do agree with what other posters have pointed out though. This is possibly about challenging the issue around self- identification and that this doesn't 'trump' an actual diagnosed condition (or protected characteristic). If self-id holds no merit with disabilities then it (could be) follows through that it doesn't with any other PC.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/10/2022 20:29

And are they supposedly suing her under Irish equality law? Why is she getting legal advice "in both jurisdictions"?

Why don't you enlighten us as to the point, then?
