I almost died in the stupidest way

So I woke up with the worst of sore throats, and I’m the kind of person who when I come down with a cold, it literally drags on for weeks and weeks and normally leads to a chest infection.

That is until I discovered the gross but effective cure of raw garlic. I read somewhere that if you swallow a small whole raw small garlic clove with a glass of water that it cures the common cold. It actually does work as well. I have been doing this for the past couple of years.

Until this morning, and somehow this garlic clove was just the right shape to get lodged in my throat. I couldn’t breathe or swallow or make a sound. I was home alone and sooo frightened. Somehow I managed to hit my own chest with my head facing down and spat out the offending garlic. So I almost died in the stupidest of ways….

I think now on I’m going to chop the garlic into tiny pieces to cure a cold.

But thought I would warn people who might be as stupid as me not to kill yourself with garlic 🧄

If you have had a near death experience in a similarly stupid way please share to make me feel less of an idiot?

I banged the back of my head on a brick wall. Serves me right for standing in my wheelie bin so I could get more rubbish in.

Somethingneedstochange · 03/10/2022 16:59

U eat raw garlic all the time when I have a cough/cold. I eat it with a raw carrot as well not on its own. I wouldn't attempt to swallow one whole. Always goes down okay.

I'm not sure about garlic for tonsillitis. I always thought it made your throat more sore. Gargling with salt water is good for tonsillitis. Someone told me to stop giving my daughter antibiotics for it. So I did she's never had it since.

When i was a kid i could make my tongue do a wave motion (kind of hard to describe), i'd put a marble in my mouth and roll it on the wave, always stopping before it hit the back of my throat, that was until my brother distracted me, marble got stuck and i started to choke, dad had to hang me upside down by my foot and whack my back to dislodge it. Terrifying and so stupid, no idea why i did it was always taught not to put them in my mouth!

I was diagnosing a squeak on my car suspension, with the car on a jack, and the wheel off.

The jack-point failed with my neck between the disc brake and the wheel arch, by pure luck (rather than good intentions) I had placed the wheel where the front of the car landed on it, had I not, my wife would have come home to an extremely gruesome scene.

Garlic/onions do absorb viruses. A trick is to put an onion cut in half in a room. A recommendation in France.

Also, many years ago, a farmer's herd escaped foot and mouth. Later, they found that a load of onions stored in a shed were completely rotted.

OldTinHat · 03/10/2022 17:01

Oh good lord, OP!!

I nearly died in the mid 80s by idly chatting on the landline and noticing that the cable to the stereo had frayed. No idea why I thought it would be a good idea to try and fix it by wrapping the wires back in.

Next thing I knew, phone was on one side of the room, I was on the other, shaking and had blistered fingers. My DF was in a lot of trouble from my DM after that for not fixing it!

Move forward to 2012, own home, wiring up a fish pond filter pump. Thought to myself that that wire shouldn't be sticking out like that - yep, did the same thing all over again!

Some of us never learn - so chop up the garlic next time OP!!

I was watching a thing on strangest deaths and one stuck with me.

A parachuting instuctor (well experianced, ran his own company) decided to offer a video of peoples jumps as an extra add on, he would strap the camera onto his back and he would film the jump... you can see where this is going can't you.

Yep he wasnt paying attention, mistook the weight of the camera on his back for his parachute pack and jumped out of the plane with no parachute and only relised when he went to pull the cord... the camera survived so they got a video of his paniced freefall to his death.

I imagine it was horrible but its also so spectacularly stupid that it stuck with me (I mean the second they said he straps the camera to his back its like 'surely everyone can predict this').

I had an old school bell on top of a bookcase that had glass doors, the bottom shelf door was tricky and needed shoogling. I did this once and when I stood up the (very, very heavy) bell had shifted all the way to the edge of the bookcase. I reckon one more shoogle and it would have landed right on my head. Shook me up, and my husband as I'm sure he'd have been prime suspect in caving in my skull! Bell now sits on the floor 🤣

You couldn’t work it out?

I couldn’t either and thought it was a typo of bird! I like to think I’m quite bright but clearly not! 😂😂😂.

It has been a long day though.

Lindy2 · 03/10/2022 17:04

I'm glad you're OK.

Garlic is an antiviral so good to eat if you have a virus, as are onions.

I would suggest that grated and put on a nice bit of French bread with butter would be a safer and much tastier way to eat it next time.

I think the stupidest thing might be believing that garlic cures a viral infection.

it must have been scary though - hope you’re ok.

Its not stupid. Garlic is great. I use it for colds and even as eardrops on our family. My kids are 7 and 8 and have never had any kind of medication in their lives apart from saline drops and home made chest rubs.

Pjqueen · 03/10/2022 17:05

Oh I’ve had a long, long day but this just made me burst out laughing on the train- thank tou

Pjqueen · 03/10/2022 17:05

Damn fat fingers- you

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 03/10/2022 17:06

I ran myself over with my own car once. Luckily it was small car and I am, ahem, substantially built. Frighten the living daylights out of me. Cracked a few ribs and got some truly spectacular bruises out of it.

As it is, it is a great story but I could have killed myself.

Rubyupbeat · 03/10/2022 17:06

@isthismylifenow
How very strange. I wonder if it was something those particular brazils were treated with?
A friend of mine always swears by carrying a bottle of piriton with her, for those kind of emergencies.

How did you manage that? 🤔

I have to ask though, what would be the difference eating a clove whole or cut up?!

😂🤯

I find it helps to shorten any viral or bacterial infection. it definitely contains germ killing ingredients. It helped me once to put a raw sliced garlic clove against a tooth abscess when I had to wait the next day to see a dentist.
Also the good old fashioned hot toddy has helped me. Vitamin C in the lemon juice, germ killing alcohol in the whiskey and throat soothing honey.

I swallowed a segment of orange once and it got lodged in my throat, it’s a very frightening experience. 🥺

mam0918 · 03/10/2022 17:09

lightisnotwhite · 03/10/2022 16:45

I did this too but I was in the sea at the time. Luckily I got washed into the shallows but I really didn’t think I’d be flipped up so quickly.

I tried to roll in the swimming pool (where you tuck your knees to your chest and hold your ankles) with arm bands on as a kid... turns out arm bands dont care which way up you are they just keep you afloat so I was stuck upside down (I had to flail around until enough weight from my swinging legs pulled me over and tipped me upright again).

My parents had no sympathy for my near drowning.

my guess is by swallowing it whole you don’t taste it as much, like swallowing a paracetamol tablet instead of chewing it…

However I would rather have a bad taste in my mouth then die lol

Didn't that happen to Brian Harvey?

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 03/10/2022 17:10

Left the car in reverse without the handbrake on. When I started it the car jolted backwards. I was in the process of getting in and fell out of the car and the front of it ran me over.

Always leave the handbrake on now obviously.

LouisCatorze · 03/10/2022 17:11

Glad you were okay OP. It must have been very frightening.

I once had a similar experience with an After Eight, in France of all places! I now nibble on them very carefully

Wheredoallthepensgo · 03/10/2022 17:11

Not me but a friend when a teen tried to take something out of the toaster with metal tongs ... not only were they electrocuted and shot across the kitchen like a human cannon ball, they collided with the dresser on the other side and a big heavy display plate tumbled down and smacked them on the head too.

When she tells the story now it's hilarious but I'm glad she's still here to tell it.
