I almost died in the stupidest way

So I woke up with the worst of sore throats, and I’m the kind of person who when I come down with a cold, it literally drags on for weeks and weeks and normally leads to a chest infection.

That is until I discovered the gross but effective cure of raw garlic. I read somewhere that if you swallow a small whole raw small garlic clove with a glass of water that it cures the common cold. It actually does work as well. I have been doing this for the past couple of years.

Until this morning, and somehow this garlic clove was just the right shape to get lodged in my throat. I couldn’t breathe or swallow or make a sound. I was home alone and sooo frightened. Somehow I managed to hit my own chest with my head facing down and spat out the offending garlic. So I almost died in the stupidest of ways….

I think now on I’m going to chop the garlic into tiny pieces to cure a cold.

But thought I would warn people who might be as stupid as me not to kill yourself with garlic 🧄

If you have had a near death experience in a similarly stupid way please share to make me feel less of an idiot?

This didn't happen to me (obv) i heard this on the radio, many years ago.

A man long term unemployed, got a job, his wife was very excited for him/them and left his new suit and shoes at the top of the stairs, ready for his very early start, he got up but not wanting to wake his wife switching the light on, he crept along the along the corridor in the dark, tripped over the shoes and fell to his death down the stairs.

This story always stuck with me as a rather pointless way to die, so even to this day, i never leave anything anywhere, that could result in trips and falls, especially near stairs, in fact i moved to a bungalow.

I saved a friends life a few years ago
A Miss Piggyesque karate chop in the middle of the shoulder blades as they were choking on a large vitamin pill, it shot out and hit the fridge which was the other side of the kitchen

A vitamin pill.....oh the irony

Wigglewump I do believe that Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan saved themselves this way. My near death experience was being given a wacking electric shock from my christmas tree lights. Not one but thrice! I kept saying to my family 'I've been electrocuted' but they didn't agree, saying if I had I'd be dead. So not as near to death as I thought. What a wallop though..

If you've ever inhaled some strong, minty toothpaste then you'll know what it's like to cheat death. I honestly wondered if I would ever inhale properly again and I've somehow done it twice! Both awful experiences.

As a child I was sitting on a bench and a tractor drove by, up a steep hill. It stopped at the top of the hill and I glanced up. The trailer had come unhooked and was speeding down the hill towards me- I managed to jump out of the way just in time and it smashed the log 😱

A friend and a coconut, I was sunbathing on a beach and asked friend to put some suncream on my back, they sat up to do it and a few seconds later a coconut landed right where their face would have been!

While on the subject of choking my mum always used to cut boiled eggs in half. When I asked her why she did that she told me about a girl she was at school with. She had started work at the cotton mill that used to be in our town. She took a boiled egg to work with her every day for dinner. Sadly one day the whole egg yolk got stuck in her throat. But because of the noise of the machinery nobody heard her choking. You really can choke on anything. Baby Millie choked on mashed potato.

Oh god you poor thing

Well done for surviving, sounds so scary

Won’t try that that’s for sure

Choking incidents terrify me, but for some reason your "well done for surviving" made me laugh 😁.

Give your self a pat on the back.. oh wait you already did 😁

This reminds me of when I choked on the inside of a mint poppet whilst watching Godzilla on the cinema. Couldn't breathe properly for ages! Gah I hate choking 😭

A few years ago I was at a school fete as one of the committee members, hi viz on going from stall to stall to check everyone was ok as it was a heatwave. At the sweet stall, bought a couple of giant cola bottles and thoughtlessly popped one into my mouth.

Only they'd really melted in the heat and it basically slid to the back of my throat, covering my windpipe. I tried to gag but it was stuck. I'm in the middle of a school field, unable to breathe with my fingers in my mouth trying to prise a gluey, slippery sweet from my throat. It was harder than I was expecting, every edge seemed to be holding firm, but I managed to release the vacuum and retrieve it whilst taking a huge gulp of air. God knows what anyone around me thought, and my husband thought it was hilarious when I told him whilst I stood there saying "I could have been killed by a giant cola bottle".

I didn’t get past the first mention of”Used loads of hairspray ….” before I was absolutely howling with laughter, I could guess what was coming. My cat is very displeased as I’ve woken her up, and she’s glaring at me. And my stomach is aching from uncontrollable laughter 🤣🤣

Hilarious 😂 mainly because you know it's something you shouldn't laugh at.

"She put herself out but stunk all day" 😂😂

When I couldn't sleep from a sore throat I decided to rest a lozenge in the back of my mouth to go to sleep, so it would slowly melt and keep medicating my throat. I obviously choked on it.
I've done the same thing with an antacid.

I can't believe 2 of us have been this daft!

I nearly died playing the fluffy bunny game. You know the one where you try and fit as many marshmallows in your mouth as you can while saying fluffy bunny over and over again. I was obvious overly competitive as I shoved so many in there I couldn't breath (cant breath through my nose well due to a previously broken nose) they were obviously all gooey and sticky and I was choking and panicking and my friends Dad had to pull all the horrid sticky mess out of my throat while I peed myself from choking so much. I wasn't invited back.

oh god that's great 😃 😀 😄

I tried to mend a split in my plastic watering can by heating it over the gas hob and trying to spread the plastic to cover the split. Unfortunately the watering can must have had weedkiller or something in it because a whole sheet of flame engulfed me, the watering can, the cooker and a good deal of the kitchen. All I could think was "I cannot ring the fire brigade and tell them my watering can is on fire!"

That's awful, and I hope you weren't hurt landoflostcontent. But

A pea, almost died because of one fucking pea. It just got stuck and wouldn't budge, I thought it was curtains. Evil green balls of death.

Burnamer · 03/10/2022 20:58

@DancyNancy did you get to the line in that article that states “However, a review of the evidence found that many of the studies investigating the effects of garlic on the common cold were of poor quality”

I still can't work out how Brian Harvey managed to reverse over himself. Anyone with a diagram????! Also didn't he try to do it deliberately? (I may be wrong! )

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/10/2022 21:05

Avidly reading this thread and laughing at everyone's near death experiences while scoffing bread and butter and slurping tea.

Have just nearly choked myself!

Does anyone have any advice on how to get partially masticated seeded batch off a keyboard? It seems to be drying like concrete . . .

IcakethereforeIam · 03/10/2022 21:07

Has it set like irony?

Hairbear2 · 03/10/2022 21:08

So pleased you are here to tell the tail.
I nearly died in a Pizza Hut in my early 20’s someone the cheese was down some was still in my mouth, got totally stuck. My friend sat opposite me just staring at me, mouth open. Shocked I expect. I managed to pull out the cheese, was kind of hoping someone would help.
Pizza Hut waiter, said ‘were you ok back then?’ A bit late.

His explanation was he had dropped a jacket potato and was trying to pick it up when the car went into reverse

or something like that. There was definitely a jacket potato involved…

Hawkins001 · 03/10/2022 21:09

Eating egg fried rice too quick and sometimes chips, which have been stuck.

MorningPlatypus · 03/10/2022 21:09

I was trying to get out of the sea when a wave caught me and smashed me, nose first, through the sand a couple of times.

It was like being in a cold, salty washing machine and my sinuses were full of water and sand. When I finally got up I thought I'd broken my nose and I was bleeding where my teeth caught my mouth.
