I almost died in the stupidest way

So I woke up with the worst of sore throats, and I’m the kind of person who when I come down with a cold, it literally drags on for weeks and weeks and normally leads to a chest infection.

That is until I discovered the gross but effective cure of raw garlic. I read somewhere that if you swallow a small whole raw small garlic clove with a glass of water that it cures the common cold. It actually does work as well. I have been doing this for the past couple of years.

Until this morning, and somehow this garlic clove was just the right shape to get lodged in my throat. I couldn’t breathe or swallow or make a sound. I was home alone and sooo frightened. Somehow I managed to hit my own chest with my head facing down and spat out the offending garlic. So I almost died in the stupidest of ways….

I think now on I’m going to chop the garlic into tiny pieces to cure a cold.

But thought I would warn people who might be as stupid as me not to kill yourself with garlic 🧄

If you have had a near death experience in a similarly stupid way please share to make me feel less of an idiot?

I nearly died sightseeing in Venice. It was chucking down with rain and DH and I were like "it is only a drop of rain, didn't come here to sit inside." The usual no bad weather just bad clothes script. Wondered why there was hardly anyone else about on the streets. Turns out was a thunderstorm. Lightening hit the pavement a few metres in front of us. Proper loud bang. Clung to the sides of the buildings after that and sought refuge in nearest café.

that must have been terrifying. Choking is a real fear of mine.

A friend almost died on a train platform whilst chatting on the phone and eating an apple. A piece lodged in his throat and he couldn’t breathe or talk. When he relaxed it wasn’t budging he hung up and punched 999 into his phone and showed it to someone on the platform and pointed at his throat and then blacked out. He came to in the back of an ambulance. 2 strangers had managed to dislodge it using Heimlich before the ambulance arrived. He was very lucky.

It was the 80's and my mate had quite a fluffy hairdo. Used loads of hairspray. We were at work and nipped out the back for a fag. As she went to light it, someone walked past and she set fire to her hair instead of her fag. I laughed and even more so when she began screaming and smacking herself in the head. She put herself out but stunk all day.
I invited this friend round mine for drinks. We were in the kitchen and she wanted a light for her fag. I told her to use the gas hob. You've guessed it. Woosh, up she went again. I was beside myself in hysterics.

I didn’t get past the first mention of”Used loads of hairspray ….” before I was absolutely howling with laughter, I could guess what was coming. My cat is very displeased as I’ve woken her up, and she’s glaring at me. And my stomach is aching from uncontrollable laughter 🤣🤣

Choked on a boiled sweet whilst on my own in a room down several long corridors (ironically in a GP practice, but corridors and stairs between me and any people). Phone...can't talk, no use. I knew about doing the self Heimlich over the back of a dining chair, but no appropriate height chairs in room. Ran backwards at a wall, and thankfully that expelled it. Phew.

You're not going to believe me but I did exactly the same thing in college. I was in such a panic choking on this garlic clove, tried to drink water (should not do this if you're choking) and then threw my midsection at the back of a chair and half barfed it up! The only thing I could think was "I cannot die like this, it's too dumb!!" There are dozens of us OP, dozens of us! 🤣

Yes there is. A PP posted a link to this 2020 article

It says ‘potential antiviral’ activity. Not a ringing endorsement.

I used a fork to get toast out of the toaster while it was still on.

Lesson learnt 😵‍💫

SilverLiningPlaybook · 03/10/2022 20:07

Oh dear. I often use tongs and forks. Won’t anymore!!

Somethingneedstochange · 03/10/2022 20:07

I did this once a friend was sat next to me. She slapped me on my back. Always remove bacon rind now before cooking.

Cupofteaonesugar · 03/10/2022 20:11

I was filling up my hot water bottle the other night and it exploded and burnt all my face. I have 3 degree burns on my forehead and around my eye. I literally nearly lost my eyesight for the sake of a hot water bottle! How mad is that?!!!

LadyLolaRuben · 03/10/2022 20:11

Ahh OP, that must have been so scary. That sounds just the same as not giving small children grapes without cutting them up - size of their wind pipe

Somethingneedstochange · 03/10/2022 20:12

It does actually shorten the length of time you have a cold. It certainly gets your sinuses cleared because of the strong garlic odour in your throat and going up into your nose. I chew one with a raw carrot once a day. Then have a ginger tea after with lemon and honey. Which is also better than any medicine for bringing up phlegm.

TheOrigRights · 03/10/2022 20:16

I almost choked and died during a 'who can eat the iced bun competition the quickest' competition at Primary school. I managed to force the lump up and out myself, much to the horror of my class mates and the dinner ladies.

I should say us kids had come up with the idea, not the staff. I know health and safety didn't exist in the late 70's but they weren't quite that cavalier!

There were no winners that day.

Wetblanket78 · 03/10/2022 20:20

I'm a single mum of two severely autistic children so was at home alone with them. I had done a stir fry for tea. I started choking on some mangtoute it was the scariest moment of my life. I really thought I was going to die there. They never understood what was wrong I couldn't get it up so drank loads of water and luckily that made it go down. Since then I have always cut vegetables up small never in long thin pieces.

OMG why did this happen?? 😣

I have used hot water bottles loads of times and never knew this was possible 😣

As a kid I thought it would be a terrific wheeze to put inflatable armbands on my ankles and jump into a swimming pool. Turns out that's a really, really silly idea. Thank heavens for lifeguards!

I’ve been trying not to laugh at so,e of these near stupid deaths but this one got better of me ..sorry ..it must have been scary…but
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

waterlego · 03/10/2022 20:25

Thanks for this thread OP, it is scary and shocking but absolutely hilarious.

I have never choked or even nearly choked but when I was a child I was eating a boiled sweet and accidentally swallowed it whole. It got stuck to the inside of my oesophagus. It was there for ages and so uncomfortable, I basically had to wait until it dissolved. At the time, I felt like I was going to die but I don’t suppose it’s actually possible to die from having something lodged in your food pipe as opposed to your trachea!

Doctors and nurses are notoriously useless for noticing anything unless its spelled out... I have nearly died (very obviously, ended up in a coma) in front of doctors before and they where complete unaware.

I say that as someone who studied medicine myself too, so Im not just picking on them.

Most doctors go into it for entirely the wrong reasons and have zero bedside manner, nurses are usually even worse. I said it before and will again its janitors/cleaners/porters that are usually the heros that notice, they dont get into it for money, titles, to make their parents happy etc... they usually do it because they really do care about people and are often the first to notice when a patient they have been working around changes.

A couple of years ago in our (hospital so lots of doctors, nurses, healthcares etc) staff canteen someone choked. The amount of people that responded was brilliant.
Poor woman was mortified but alive.
