I home school my two teens.

Every couple of weeks I give them a conspiracy theory to look up, write a bit about, and give me their opinion on, and reasons for that opinion. It helps them with research and critical thinking (I hope).

I've done a lot of the obvious ones, New world order, 9/11, JFK assassination, some of the denial ones in WW2 etc.

I'm running out of ideas for other ones, preferably that incorporate history, geography etc, or just ones that are a bit out there or interesting.

TIA Flowers

Thanks @lifeturnsonadime it's very odd, I can only conclude that there's some deep routed trauma there and they have decided to take it out on me for some reason.

I'll go have a look at that book @Lansonmaid thank you.

What about the Bill Gates and covid one. Very topical.

Dr Richard Shepherd was one of the country's leading forensic pathologists and he devotes a chapter or two in that book to the death of the spy in the bath. He also wrote a book of memoirs called Unnatural Causes. Both recommended if you are not squeamish!

What do you mean by 'predictive programming'?
Also, I'm going to be late for work because of this thread.

There's a video on YouTube detailing all the things that actually happened. With the dancing nurses/nightingales. There's an effigy that looks like Boris Johnson. They basically tried to say the pandemic was planned and they were coming after our children. The original video was taken down, but I'm sure if you put it in YouTube you'll find it.

I talk to my children about the idea of conspiracy theories and we laugh at some of them. I also talk to them about other (much more important) areas where they might need to be able to distinguish truth from lies and to evaluate different sources.

What I don't do is actively source hundreds and hundreds of different ones - because what on earth is the possible value of going through all the utter shite spewed on this thread? How does it benefit a young person learning about the world to be told 50, 60, 70 different piles of shit rather than a couple of examples? It doesn't.

I see your point, yes.

Muriel Gray burned down the Glasgow School of Art

I'm unwilling to go into her sizeable motivations for doing so because it' might prejudice the trial, once Police Scotland finally get around to nicking her.

@SecretMoomin do tell more about the Titanic - what happened to the original, why was there a switch?

I don’t know much about it, but there was a window or other architectural feature that was present on Olympic but not Titanic, which kind of proved it wasn’t Titanic that sunk.

There’s loads on YouTube about it I think!

A friend died on one of the planes on 9/11, not the New York crashes but one of the others. And I had a conspiracy theorist say to my face that it wasn't real, there were no other planes, and she never existed.

Batshit.

My favourite is that the earth is flat and Australians are lying.

There's drone footage on tiktok supposedly of him on an island, and he hides in his car when he sees the drone

😂 I've imagined him living in a luxurious mansion on this private island. No idea why he'd need to hide in a car

Goes off to research this theory

Well, I am Jewish, so well done for adding to the already massive number of conspiracy theories that essentially boil down to Jews being evil and having a secret hidden agenda

And yes, @KitchiHuritAngeni , there probably is some "deep routed [sic] trauma", given that my entire extended family were murdered in the Holocaust, which was largely spurred on by the sort of antisemitic, irrational, moronic "theories" you're pushing down your children's throats. Well done.

Oh ffs, that's not what I'm doing at all.

You've jumped onto my thread, read what you wanted to read, and called me a shit parent and teacher for giving my kids a subject they get in school (although you did say you discuss conspiracy theories with your kids too, but I guess that's OK because you're telling them what to think instead of giving them the tools to research and make up their own minds, great parenting there 👍)

If your own thought process, rather than my actual words, offend you so much then just hide the thread, you'll never have to see it again.

You have zero idea of who I am, what religion I follow, what my background is or anything else so don't bother trying to make on like I'm pushing an agenda or being offensive because I'm not at all.

I seriously suggest stepping away from the internet if you're going to take offence at scenarios you've made up in your own head and then take it out on other people. I'm not going to engage in your misplaced offence anymore.

That's a pretty random place 🤣

I honestly don't know where some of these come from.

Others I sort of understand the thought process behind, to a degree, but some just seem to come out of nowhere.

Just a thought, but if you've looked at a number of current conspiracy theories with them how about looking at something like historic Witch Trials. I think it helps put the some of the current theories in to perspective to look at the circumstances in which historic theories have spread and done lots of damage, and the way that some people have used them to manipulate others. You could study Arthur Miller's The Crucible as part of this discussion and even lead on to discussion about what that play was actually about.

What do you advocate then, that no one can study or discuss different conspiracy theories ?

Given that even educated adults evidently find it very difficult to distinguish truth from lies, I don't think it's 'great parenting' to tell your children to 'make up their own minds' about whether or not the Earth is flat, species evolved or were created, or the Holocaust/911/the moon landings 'really happened', no.

Most people understand that part of being a good parent is to guide your children, not to bombard them with half-baked bullshit spiced up with a bit of racism and tell them to go and 'make up their own minds' about it.

That's not education. That's throwing your children, educationally speaking, to the wolves. Great parenting there.

I wonder if the reason we have a capitalist system, is that if we had communism then with the different industries only producing what's needed and a central planned economy, then you would only need a certain number of people. But with capitalism various companies, people ect aiming for a slice, so to guess.

I could be wrong and happy to be corrected.

Hawkins001 · 29/09/2022 17:15

What do you advocate then, that no one can study or discuss different conspiracy theories ?

Did I say that? No.

Do I think that? No.

I said very clearly that there is absolutely zero value in bombarding young children with endless examples of the sort of post-truth, garbled, racist, ignorant bullshit that are politely called 'conspiracy theories'.

Sure - introduce them to the concept that there are some people who, either through stupidity, boredom, ignorance, lack of education, prejudice and bigotry, a lack of ability to assess the truth or reliability of sources, liking to make up bollocks for fun, or some combination of the above, like to tell lies about things that happened: in many cases lies which cause huge distress and upset to the people who were personally affected by the original incidents.

Introduce them to the people who tell the families bereaved by 9/11, the Holocaust, the Sandy Hook massacre, etc. that they're lying, that they didn't really lose loved ones. Talk with them about why anyone would spread such appalling lies, and what their agenda is.

Collecting as many examples as possible in order to encourage the liars - I mean 'conspiracy theorists' - to disseminate them further, and giving your children such poor boundaries, guidance and teaching that you tell them to 'make their own minds up' about something like that? Nah. Something is seriously wrong with that.
