I home school my two teens.

Every couple of weeks I give them a conspiracy theory to look up, write a bit about, and give me their opinion on, and reasons for that opinion. It helps them with research and critical thinking (I hope).

I've done a lot of the obvious ones, New world order, 9/11, JFK assassination, some of the denial ones in WW2 etc.

I'm running out of ideas for other ones, preferably that incorporate history, geography etc, or just ones that are a bit out there or interesting.

TIA Flowers

BloodAndFire you really are coming across as vexatious and lacking in the critical thinking skills OP is using conspiracy theories to teach.

OP my favourite conspiracy theory, that a little bit of me really hopes is/was true, is the multiple Melanias one from when Trump was President. Hilarious.
(Note to BloodAndFire that enjoying the existence of this conspiracy theory and posting about it does not mean I actually believe it, as I suspect is also the case for nearly every poster in this thread).

No issue at all with the pages of Holocaust denial immediately preceding this then?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 29/09/2022 18:14

you think the 'research' that children can do is better than the research done by scientists, historians, mathematicians, geographers, palaeontologists, etc.?

You're pretty much arguing for 'the experts are always right, don't bother with thinking about it, just accept what they say' there. I remember doing research at school for projects and essays, it was called education; which involved finding sources, assessing them, and assembling an argument. If I've read her right, this is what the OP is doing.

The film the sixth day with aronald Schwarzenegger is a good perspectives

I’d like to add that I don’t literally believe the JonBenet is Katy Perry conspiracy theory, nor do I believe that the US Navy really did teleport a warship and had a sort of ‘The Fly’ accident with crew becoming welded to the structure.I don’t believe in QAnon or the appalling ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion.’

I just thought the thread was meant to be a bit of a laugh.

The Jon Benet/Katy Perry conspiracy theory was all the rage at one point. I remember someone posting multiple photographs of their ears as ‘evidence’. I wonder why some conspiracy theories just fade away and some are much more ‘popular’ for decades.

Hawkins001 · 29/09/2022 19:59

What other ones have people knowledge of ?

7Worfs · 29/09/2022 19:59

Just thought of a different one - “they” purposefully create and spread crazy theories in order to bury the real ones, and to discredit conspiracy theorists as lunatics.

Pretty much accurate, id guess, create that much fog and then your always chasing shadows, so to speak.

Jadacakes23 · 29/09/2022 20:02

Oh bore off Bloodandfire the OP can teach HER children whatever she likes and parent them as she chooses. There is nothing wrong with questioning a theory or allowing teens to open their minds and decide what they want to believe in. Do you always have to be right? Do you raise your children to be media sheep and that they have to argue to their death that they’re correct and everyone else is wrong like you’re currently doing? If you don’t like the idea of talking to teens about theories then don’t read the thread or comment on it, it’s really as simple as that!

OP I think it’s a great idea, it teaches them to think for themselves instead of believing everything they are told or read. Very important quality to have in this day and age.
Without adding the same subjects you’ve been sent here, here’s a few others I can think of: mermaids, Bigfoot, humans are a science experiment, abandoned staircases in woods, a forest in Japan that ‘causes’ suicide whenever someone enters, the sky is a hologram, uvb-76 Russian radio station, Lochness monster, Stonehenge, ufo sightings are time travelling humans from the future.

Hawkins001 · 29/09/2022 20:05

@Jadacakes23
your radio station one, reminded me of the number broadcasts during different periods in history, that were said to be espionage related

Jadacakes23 · 29/09/2022 20:13

Yes I think it is spy related, I looked into it once upon a time and tuned into the radio station to hear live a man talking in code. Freaked me out a bit at the time but I’m sure it’s just secret spy/military stuff. The theory is that it’s a dead man’s switch.

Have you seen the documentary about the suicide Forrest in Japan? So creepy x

Numbers station?
There are quite a few radio stations that broadcast odd things.

Jadacakes23 · 29/09/2022 21:55

No I haven’t but I did see a YouTube video and that was enough to stop me falling down a rabbit hole! Those poor people and families.

yes number stations, usually left open so no one else takes it and can be used for old fashioned communication, but if you look into the Russian one it’s very creepy in comparison, especially the recording of a woman screaming at the top of her lungs and calling for help which I believe can still be found on YouTube

Hawkins001 · 30/09/2022 00:04

Not so much a conspiracy, but an intriguing creation is the duga, array.

"The Duga Radar Array (Russian: Дуга) or Arch near Chernobyl was part of a Soviet Over-The-Horizon (OTH) radar used to detect early Intercontinental Anti Ballistic Missile (ICBM) launches. The radar was built in 1976 and operated till the fall of the Soviet Union."

The Philadelphia experiment, I believe the ship was a part of.

@BloodAndFire you are being remarkably rude and unkind, it’s unnecessary.
Enough now.

Birds are not real. They are drones, with cameras for eyes.

Well can whoever is in charge of the robin drone that keeps coming into my kitchen and pooping please make him stop! 🤣

Justin Trudeau is Fidel Castro's illegitimate son. Honestly, it kind of has legs.

So you think the 'research' that children can do is better than the research done by scientists, historians, mathematicians, geographers, palaeontologists, etc.?

The world was created 6,000 years ago and dinosaurs did not exist. Why would we need to consult a palaeontologist when the only truth is what your God says, whoever they are?

I would not trust scientists either. Nearly 100 years ago the mainstream scientists in Germany had convinced almost the entire population that some human races and tribes were genetically inferior and had no rights to exist.

I am just not sure who to believe. I suppose I will just accept whatever I read from time to time without giving it too much critical thought.

mangoontoast · 30/09/2022 06:51

See if you can find Can't Get You Out Of My Head on BBC I player. 6 part Adam Curtis documentary which would provide plenty of talking points and critical thinking opportunities. It also explains how the Illiliminati conspiracy theory was made up and why.

My own personal belief conspiracy theory on this is neither. The whole death was faked and he is living on a private island somewhere.

Very likely with so many influential people behind him, it's unlikely they would let him rot in prison.

Moranguinho · 09/12/2022 11:35

BloodAndFire · 29/09/2022 17:20

Did I say that? No.

Do I think that? No.

I said very clearly that there is absolutely zero value in bombarding young children with endless examples of the sort of post-truth, garbled, racist, ignorant bullshit that are politely called 'conspiracy theories'.

Sure - introduce them to the concept that there are some people who, either through stupidity, boredom, ignorance, lack of education, prejudice and bigotry, a lack of ability to assess the truth or reliability of sources, liking to make up bollocks for fun, or some combination of the above, like to tell lies about things that happened: in many cases lies which cause huge distress and upset to the people who were personally affected by the original incidents.

Introduce them to the people who tell the families bereaved by 9/11, the Holocaust, the Sandy Hook massacre, etc. that they're lying, that they didn't really lose loved ones. Talk with them about why anyone would spread such appalling lies, and what their agenda is.

Collecting as many examples as possible in order to encourage the liars - I mean 'conspiracy theorists' - to disseminate them further, and giving your children such poor boundaries, guidance and teaching that you tell them to 'make their own minds up' about something like that? Nah. Something is seriously wrong with that.

assess the truth or reliability of sources

As if there is only one truth and sources that are reliable. Who is the judge of that?
