When are you turning the heating on?

Assuming that you will turn it on at some point, is there a date or a temperature you're waiting for?

It's only 16 degrees inside my house right now and my hands are freezing! But somehow it feels wrong to put the heating on before October.

The heating system has been "on" all summer with the thermostat set at 16 degrees. But it only switches on the radiators when the house reaches that temperature so that's when the heating will really go "on".

EstellaRijnveld · 26/09/2022 16:52

Trying to leave, it until November if possible at least until half term.

OceanbreezeSun · 26/09/2022 16:53

We’ve just started putting it on this last week, definitely feels cooler. We’ve set it to come on for an hour in the morning (6am) then an hour in the evening at 8pm.

My hands are freezing as I type this, but house is 19 degrees, so it’s an extra jumper for me.

CloseYourMouthLynn · 26/09/2022 16:57

We usually wait until October half term but will probably leave it longer this year.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/09/2022 17:02

Mine is set to 18 so once it drops below that. I'm cold and have started wearing my Oodie. DH insists it's not cold and leaves doors open without thinking creating draughty

LBOCS2 · 26/09/2022 17:04

It's 10°c outside at the moment; and in the house it's 16.5°c. Our thermostat is set to come on at 16, so we're not far off. I am chilly but my job involves sitting at a desk for long periods so it's not surprising - I've got a hoody and slippers on, and have been around putting most of the upstairs windows on the catch rather than ajar, which should help over the next few days. It will come on when it comes on, but I was hoping to last until early October tbh...!

QueensEyot · 26/09/2022 17:04

Currently having thermostat wars with my student DC. I refuse to turn the heating on until it's below 13 degrees. My optimum temp is 16 degrees.

LadyHelenaJustina · 26/09/2022 17:05

The room I am in is currently 19 degrees. I’m currently in a T-shirt and it is comfortable. It makes such a difference when the sun is shining. Our heating is currently turned off, and we are reducing the number of times the water is heated as we realised we could go for several days before the hot water needed a boost. We’ll put ours on when we are all wearing fleeces and still feel cold. I’ll use the log burner to take the edge off for as long as I can, though. I spent years living in a big old house with no heating at all, and it was miserable; now that we have heating I shall use it when it is prudent to do so.

gingercat02 · 26/09/2022 17:11

About 20mins ago. It's raining and cold here

Fladdermus · 26/09/2022 17:12

Mine went on last night. I was trying to hold off for as long as possible but caved. Being in Sweden doesn't help.

U2HasTheEdge · 26/09/2022 17:15

I just boosted mine to bring it up to almost 20c.

My grandson's hands and nose were really cold and he is not impressed with wearing mittens. My hands were also pretty cold, so on it went.

Wallywobbles · 26/09/2022 17:19

No time soon. Had first fire yesterday evening.

Favouritefruits · 26/09/2022 17:23

I’m trying to hold off until 30th October, I saw it in an article it was the best time too but can’t remember why 😂

Glorieta · 26/09/2022 17:29

Ita 12 degrees outside and hive says says 18 but I feel really cold today.

Didn't sleep well last night and feel achy.

Would love a hot bath but it seems so wasteful

Gooseysgirl · 26/09/2022 18:02

Waiting until half term if possible, but we are in SE where weather has been relatively mild. Once it cools down a bit, we will be in blankets and extra layers.

caringcarer · 26/09/2022 18:13

I was thinking of this only this morning. At the meeting I have a large warm fleece on sofa and in evenings sit under there. DH also has one. DFS has fleecy PJ's and a fleece snuggle blanket. I have read in paper next week will be a bit warmer so was hoping to hang on until October if at all possible. I am still quite worried about utility bills even with government help. It is still going up again in October.

God I couldn’t live there, your house must be cold and damp. Even workplace guidelines say a min of 16. 13 is miserable

Airymanning · 26/09/2022 18:35

Still 22 in lounge

RoseBucket · 26/09/2022 18:36

I can’t afford to have it in just yet, holding out as long as possible to try and bank some of the energy bill scheme payments when it gets really cold.

Im tight with heating anyway (because of costs, not being miserable 🙄)

Wrist warmers/fingerless gloves make a surprising difference.

VerbenaGirl · 26/09/2022 18:38

Trying to start as we mean to go on and use the heating as a last resort once we’ve all got thermal vests, jumpers, thick socks, slippers and hand-warmers on. Had a blanket over my legs while I was wfh today, and on the sofa this evening. Thinking about getting a couple of heated blankets. Suspect that DH will cave before I do! I’d like to get to November.

BrokenWing · 26/09/2022 18:42

I am closing doors to avoid draughts, have my fingerless gloves on, and a blanket over my legs. dh is sitting in a short sleeved t-shirt!!!

Heating went on last week for couple of hours each night. We are in Scotland, it only hit 13 degrees here today, it is 9 degrees outside just now and heating not on yet, will put it on around 7:30-ish.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 26/09/2022 18:58

Not for a good few weeks yet, I reckon.

I wfh and started at 6am this morning, was chilly but I made a hot water bottle and wore my dressing gown. I'm using a blanket while sat on the sofa. I feel the cold, but hubby and DD are still in t shirts and shorts in the house, so I don't think heating is needed yet!

Oh golly that is chilly tbh. Our house very rarely gets under 15.

FetlocksBlowingInTheWind · 26/09/2022 20:49

I don't think I would function very well at 13 degrees indoors!

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 26/09/2022 20:51

We can't afford to. I'm really worried about the cost of energy, I'm even limiting the amount of time I spend online or watching TV.
