When are you turning the heating on?

Assuming that you will turn it on at some point, is there a date or a temperature you're waiting for?

It's only 16 degrees inside my house right now and my hands are freezing! But somehow it feels wrong to put the heating on before October.

Intermittently for the last week or so, but only for a while first thing in the morning and then again early evening to take the chill off. I WFH and try to avoid having it on in the day when I'm here on my own, but my hands are flipping freezing right now!

Hive tells me it is 22.5 degrees in the house, me thinks Hive lies. Grin

It only tells you it's 22.5° where you have your thermostat. If it's next to a warm appliance (fridge etc) it'll be different than if it's next to a window, but the general temp of the house will be different.

The temp it says is pretty meaningless, it's only any use in regard to whether that reading (2 or 22) is cold enough to want the heating on in your house.

dame with people comparing one house to another

where the thermostat is, means it showing 20° in a house will be different ACTUAL-temperature in each house

MangoBiscuit · 26/09/2022 13:04

Still 21 degrees in our house, with maybe half the windows slightly open. DP is sat in a t-shirt, but I do have a thin hoody on.

When we start feeling chilly even with layers on, or when it starts to drop below 15 at night, or 16.5 during the day at which point the heating will kick in anyway. Before that I will start closing the windows (after airing first thing) and everyone will put on more layers. We all have fluffy onesies this year, even DP.

hopeishere · 26/09/2022 11:29

At the minute I'm just using the boost function. So it went on for an hour last night and two on Saturday night as it felt chilly.

Full on timed thermostat being on? No idea when we will do that! WFH meant I had to keep boosting it anyway last year. I might light the fire more in the room I work in.

Ooh deep envy!!

StarDolphins · 26/09/2022 13:07

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination i bought him a coat & a jumper & he won’t even take a step in either of them, just stands there looking at me until I take it off. I cover him with blankets but if my DD or I leave the room he gets out of the blankets to follow us then starts shivering! It’s not even a drastic cut either🙄 I just want him to be happy & comfy! Maybe I should just put him in my Oodie with me so I can leave the heating off🤣

Hbh17 · 26/09/2022 13:08

Can't decide by a random date and I have absolutely no idea what temperature it is in the house. When it feels cold we turn it on and if it warms up then we turn it off. Seems the only logical way to do it!

HuntingoftheSnark · 26/09/2022 13:13

Haven't thought about heating and hope that it'll be early December before it needs to be on. The house was built in 1737, sash windows, listed building and I'm used to it being cold so have enough warm socks and blankets. I might go into the office more later this year though.

Lellochip · 26/09/2022 11:29

What do people mean when they talk about 'switching it on' - do you all turn off the thermostat in the summer, or at the boiler? I've never turned anything off, just let it come on as needed, no matter the time of year

@Lellochip

Obviously they mean boosting it or setting the system to come on at a certain temperature, whatever, so that the heating kicks in. Some people leave it set all summer, others don't. I don't, I switch mine to 'off' (which is actually 5° frost control for the pipes) for several reasons, one of which is using it more thoughtfully when it starts to get colder. Mine is probably set around 23° for chunks of the day (from the end if last winter) so it would kuck in & be in niw, but bloody pointless when I have all the windows open.

you don't understand my way & I think yours wastes energy, but each to our own I guess 💁🏻‍♀️

fabulous you are happy with the temperature you've got yours kicking in at and don't have much variation in your days, but, for example, I have a 7 day timer so I can set up 4 timings each day for 7 dayS, but that isn't even enough variation as I work irregular hours and I don't want it heating an empty house or not coming on before I get home to start warming it up.

also on days I'm busy around the house I don't need it on much or at all, but if I'm just sitting I might want it in a bit more.

some days 20° feels warm enough & others it feels bloody cold!

Hugasauras · 26/09/2022 11:30

We don't consciously turn it on but every room has thermostatic smart valves on radiator on various schedules so when it drops under a certain temp in each room at certain times it goes on. It's started to come on in mornings now - we are in north-east Scotland.

I think at the end of this winter I'm going to look at replacing the thermostats on all of the rads to digital ones and swapping the one you have to have without a thermostat to one if the hallway ones & putting one in the bathroom Rad as that's the only one I care about in the mornings!!

what system do you use?

DawkinsOldSpot · 26/09/2022 13:24

Normally have it on November - February so couple of months yet for us

Dannexe · 26/09/2022 13:29

It’s ten degrees outside here and it’s 17 in the house. I’m cold despite wearing thick tights and a jumper dress with a Lycra top underneath and having a throw across my lap. I might make myself move and light a fire

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 13:32

7Worfs · 26/09/2022 11:45

I can't believe anyone needs the heating on all night in September my that's bonkers

It’s because I am co-sleeping and breastfeeding a newborn all night (and can’t use a duvet) and a 3yo who kicks his duvet off in his sleep.
If it were adults only household we’d just use our duvet and wouldn’t need the heating for a while yet.

@7Worfs

congratulations on your newborn 👶😍

can you afford it? & are you happy to pay for it?

if not you could wear a onesie or socks/joggers/warm top(s) in a good combination of tops for lifting up/pulling down for breastfeeding and you can use cellular blankets & put your baby in a long sleeve vest & grow bag.

LucyInTheSkyWithDiamond · 26/09/2022 13:33

I'm hoping we can last till November

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 13:34

Wanda616 · 26/09/2022 11:45

Thermostat reckons it's 21° in our house. Doesn't feel it

@Wanda616 you need to consider where it's placed. It's only taking a reading where it is, not the whole house.

Frazzled2207 · 26/09/2022 13:36

I agreed with husband not before October.
slightly regretting but wearing my big furry hoody in the house.

we’re quite lucky though in the house is quite well insulated- a little bit of heat will toast up the house and retain it well.

lobsterkiller · 26/09/2022 13:37

I haven't yet, I've got some lovely sheepskin slippers and a heated throw, so far so good.

I have just ordered a shit load of wood for the log burner, comes next week.

I don't deal with being cold very well at all, but so far it hasn't been too bad in my end of Yorkshire. It's nippy in the mornings but not too bad at night.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 13:38

Chemenger · 26/09/2022 11:49

We're in Scotland, and we have patio doors wide open most of the day. It's too hot at night inside, my guess is that heating will go on around November. The only source of heat at the moment is the dehumidifier we use to dry laundry, which is making the room it's in unbearably warm!

If you're concerned about bills, look at how much the dehumidifier is costing to run, some are more expensive to run (per hour) than a tumble dryer. You might be better buying a heat pump dryer. Or you may prefer the dehumidifier as it's heating the house too, but knowing how much it's costing us a good thing - unless you're very very well off!

Spinninggyro · 26/09/2022 13:41

Turned mine on yesterday evening, it stopped working an hour later ( boiler only 4 years old and regularly serviced). Very glad I put it on before it was really cold! Engineer coming to sort it out on Wednesday.

Spanielsarepainless · 26/09/2022 13:42

As soon as the predicted temperature drop occurs. Our energy company is, so far, honouring our fixed rate deal till October 2023.

nannybeach · 26/09/2022 13:45

When it gets cold,(gas) boiler is turned off for summer, got economy 7,so that does the water,it's 16c outside today,SE UK, 22 in. We kept the emersion heater, and the special radiation bathroom heater, everyone said we were made, when we had the new boiler. The bathroom faces north, and even with a decent extractor gets dreadfully steamed up, without the fire on, while you're showering, but it's not cold enough for the CH . when I retired,we future proofed, downsized 2 bed bungalow, had decent double or triple A rated doors and windows installed, and DH put really thick loft insulation.

DoubleNit · 26/09/2022 13:45

We've had it on a couple of times but it probably won't go on daily for another few weeks. We've got oil heating and we're just trying to make it last as long as possible.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 13:46

BadgeronaMoped · 26/09/2022 11:50

We've had ours on before we get up in the morning for the last couple of weeks.

I understand the layering, but how do those who layer cope with showers and baths? Do you heat the bathroom or just get on with it? - I really hate a cold bathroom, that's why I ask.

@BadgeronaMoped

Mostly by reminding myself it's lovely & warm once I get in the shower & if I don't faff about & just get dried & dressed it's fine! 🥶😂

but as I said in another post, I'm looking at getting digital thermostats for each rad & finding out if it's ok to leave the hallway rad without a thermostat instead of the (huge) towel rail in the bathroom. I might also look at what's involved in getting an infra red heater for the bathroom, it's the only room I want warm in the mornings, I cannot stand, the bedroom being over heated & it's such a waste as I'm up & out in the week.

slowquickstep · 26/09/2022 13:49

Open fire has been on the last 2 days

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 13:52

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/09/2022 12:06

Christmas day, just for a treat.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn

I hope you're just being provocative & don't really mean that! (Or have log burner or other heating you'll use). If you don't & you do mean it, have you looked into all the available grants & benefits?? Do you need help to do that?

(from your user name I hope you're just saying it )

KangarooKenny · 26/09/2022 13:53

It’s been on twice in the last week. I actually woke up cold the other night, so I’ve put a blanket on my bed.
