When are you turning the heating on?

Assuming that you will turn it on at some point, is there a date or a temperature you're waiting for?

It's only 16 degrees inside my house right now and my hands are freezing! But somehow it feels wrong to put the heating on before October.

Slippers make the biggest difference to me, when sat at my home desk.

As luck would have it, I've just trained the dog to go and fetch them for me. Most useful Grin

Oh that is genius 😀

L1ttledrummergirl · 29/09/2022 09:43

Yep, when I'm working from home it's vest, t-shirt, jumper, blanket, slippers, dog on the lap...

I'm thinking of filling a hot water bottle today.

gatehouseoffleet · 29/09/2022 11:15

I don't know, I think DH may want it switched on earlier than I would. Maybe we'll just do an hour a day from the middle of October - you need to balance the energy costs with the cost of dealing with damp.

However, I have a garden office and am currently sitting here in gilet, hoodie, scarf and fingerless gloves and it's not even October yet! I am in Hampshire too, it's cold.

Rapidtango · 29/09/2022 11:16

Now I want a dog to fetch my slippers. Asked the cat to do it - the look of disdain was immense.

Misandre · 29/09/2022 12:01

I need to figure out what it actually costs to run the heating for an hour. This would be easier if our smartmeter worked as it should, rather than as a charmingly idiosyncratic random number generator.

It was 14.5 this morning so the heating went on. All this "how can you even think about it before November, I'm still in my flip flops" nonsense is starting to grate.

JuvenileEmu · 29/09/2022 12:03

There may be some good news for other people worried about energy bills- I've just had the statement with the amount I'll be paying over the winter and with the £400 reduction I'm actually going to be paying less than last year! So hopefully it will also not be as bad as feared for others.

sarahc336 · 29/09/2022 12:07

We've had to start putting it in for maybe 30 mins in the morning and 30 mins in the evening to warm the house through but last year I'd have probably let it run for an hour in the morning etc. we live in a cold and droughts Victorian semi though so our house does run cooler. I'll defo be using it less but I can't bear to see my children shivering so we all stay in the warmer room and keep the fire shut to keep the heat in. It's a balance between using less but not being frozen isn't it x

Wishyfishy · 29/09/2022 12:41

I need to try and figure out when it went on last year. Might go through old metre readings and see when the gas numbers start moving. I’ve never put on September but I reckon occasionally I crumble start of October so I will do a few more weeks minimum.

Actually looking at the weather it gets warmer next week overnight than this week so it hopefully will be a while yet.

Wishyfishy · 29/09/2022 12:45

Actually checked, I don’t think it was until 3rd week of October last year. I’m certainly not going to use more energy this year than last so I guess I’ll let myself put it on in a month. All my financial predictions are based on last year.
DC are ready with dressing gowns and onesies but don’t seem to need much yet.

Bemyclementine · 29/09/2022 21:49

The weather seems to have changed so quickly. It was 15.5° in my house this morning and despite being warm snd sunny today, (I ha to take my cardigan off when I left work!) It was 16.5 when I got in at 2pm

Not had the CH on yet, we had a fire g other night though.im not putting the heating on il half term if then. We have oil , I'm a single parent snd already struggling.

Davethecat2001 · 29/09/2022 22:04

Put ours on this evening.

OH got grumpy and said no, but me and the kids s were cold so on it went.

SzeliSecond · 29/09/2022 22:14

Still melting here in NW. Baby due in Nov so will prob have to put it on in the night then

Blocked · 29/09/2022 22:31

It was fairly warm today so definitely not cold enough in my house for heating this evening. I think reading these threads makes me feel colder, I wouldn't have considered putting the heat on yet ordinarily Grin

We have oil too, if there's an oil buying network near you they can save you quite a lot of money if you're ordering a smaller amount (2-300 litres)

Dannexe · 30/09/2022 05:55

I've just clicked mine on for an hour. Its cold here. Reading 15 downstairs.

Goosygandy · 30/09/2022 06:06

I'd put the heating on if it went down to 16 degrees while I was up and about (not so bothered about when I'm in bed because I certainly wouldn't get cold in September at bedtime in London). Luckily we're not that cold here during the day as we're getting sunshine still.

MrsDoyle351 · 30/09/2022 06:55

Holding out until Nov 1st here (hopefully!) but we do have a log burner that may be on before then.

@JuvenileEmu is your cheaper energy bill because it's still September and the price doesn't happen until Oct 1st?

Darbs76 · 30/09/2022 06:57

mine has been on a couple of weeks. It just automatically comes on when temp drops under a certain amount that I’ve set. This is a cold house, my daughter is never cold but I’ve given her the spare duvet too for her bed. Fortunately I’m in a position to pay for the additional costs, having had a recent promotion. I am trying to save where I can on electricity and now DS has gone off to Uni that helps (well with the electricity anyway!)

Normally have it on November - February so couple of months yet for us

Yep same here! Growing up with my very frugal mother, there was a zero percent chance of the heating going on before November, so it's just normal for me. In the last few days, the house has been at 15-16 degrees until about 9am. We all just dress very cozily with lots of layers. Merino wool base layers are fab. I have an electric heater that I blast for literally a few minutes whilst my little one gets changed.

In general, we just get up and out the house quite early in the day so it doesn't really matter.

RiseofTheSourDough · 30/09/2022 12:03

I’m sat in socks, trousers, a top and one of those large oversized fleece hoodies, under a duvet and my hands are freezing.

I also have a stinking virus. I feel like I want to put the heating on but I’m also very aware of the costs. It’s 14 degrees inside. Should I treat myself to a bit of heat?

rumbypumby · 30/09/2022 12:54

It was 18 degrees in my part of Scotland yesterday, felt nice when outside.
Today the heavens have opened and it's rained heavily non stop for the last 4 hours and still going and it's 11 outside.
Today is the first day I've felt cold. Ive got one oil radiator which I've put in the baby's room for nap time and otherwise have just put on plenty of layers. We're fine so far. Aiming for half term before heating goes on.

Beezknees · 30/09/2022 13:12

I turned it on last night for a bit. I live in a 2 bed new build flat so it's quite energy efficient, with there only being 2 of us and both out all day the bills aren't high plus I've got the £650 grant as I get UC top ups. Thankfully that will get us through this winter and I won't really have to worry about the cost until next year.
