When are you turning the heating on?

Assuming that you will turn it on at some point, is there a date or a temperature you're waiting for?

It's only 16 degrees inside my house right now and my hands are freezing! But somehow it feels wrong to put the heating on before October.

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination We have the Hive ones as we had Hive already but just with a hall thermostat originally. They were really easy to install and seem to be working well!

@Hugasauras

thank you. I'll have to try & see if you can use just the individual rad thermostats with an app or only if you have the main hive system...

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 15:32

RoachTheHorse · 26/09/2022 14:02

We just got hive digital TRVs too. Now my office is a balmy 19 degrees and the rest of the house is set at 14 until the kids are due home 🤣

@RoachTheHorse excellent!!!

Just engaged brain cells, you must have to have the main hive system
ir they couldn't talk to each other 🙇🏻‍♀️

I'll have to have a look to see what I can do. I have a Worcester combi & Honeywell thermostat.

Bearsan · 26/09/2022 15:36

Heating is on first thing for half an hour, then we light the log burner late afternoon or early evening. If we're going out in the evening we put the heating on for half an hour starting five minutes before we return.
We both grew up without central heating so being warm is a priority and we aren't changing what we normally do. Same with food shopping, Christmas, holidays etc.
Sick of all the fear spread by media, government whoever.

Bytrgrewd · 26/09/2022 15:36

13 degrees inside 7 outside. Won’t hold off with the heating for much longer but we have stupid biomass wood pellet heating - the price has gone up 45% since January.

AclowncalledAlice · 26/09/2022 15:41

It's been on the last 2 evenings and probably again this evening. The thermostat is st at 19 degrees at the moment.

Hugasauras · 26/09/2022 15:43

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination I think Tado ones use their own system

pompomdaisy · 26/09/2022 15:56

October 1st if I must

mmmflakycrust81 · 26/09/2022 16:01

We are trying to last as long as possible. We noticed for the first time cold floors this morning so everyone had slippers and a dressing gown. I had a blanket on the sofa last night.

We are still able to have windows open in the day to let fresh air in so we hopefully are a way off yet.

I have been buying oodie knock offs from vinted to wear around the house when working from home.

Katypp · 26/09/2022 16:03

Am I being awful in thinking that some people - not many in this thread to be fair - are getting a little kick from indulging in their own poverty porn and outdoing each other on who is the coldest/poorest?
I am a member of a Facebook budgeting page and they are all 'freezing' on there and posting photos of themselves wrapped un in Oodies and blankets (that they have spent loads on). Today there was someone in tears because they couldn't believe they had used £1.20 of electricity yesterday!
It's almost as if the drama has been building for months and they can't wait for it to start.
I mean, I know health conditions and all that, but no-one needs the heating on all night, ever, never mind in September.

EugeneLevysEyebrow · 26/09/2022 16:06

A few hours ago.

I’m working from home and hate being cold. I’m very lucky in that there’s other things I can cut back on before heating though.

UnagiForLife · 26/09/2022 16:09

When my nose starts to feel cold is a good indication I need to put the heating on. Which hasn’t happened yet.

Chipsahoy · 26/09/2022 16:10

Chemenger · 26/09/2022 11:49

We're in Scotland, and we have patio doors wide open most of the day. It's too hot at night inside, my guess is that heating will go on around November. The only source of heat at the moment is the dehumidifier we use to dry laundry, which is making the room it's in unbearably warm!

We are in Scotland too and I have heat and wood burner going. We live high up in a draughty old house and 45mph winds and currently 6c outside!

Hugasauras · 26/09/2022 16:12

It's wild in our part of Scotland today! 8 degrees out and very windy and rainy!

StarDolphins · 26/09/2022 16:14

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 15:20

@StarDolphins

Maybe you need to cuddle up on the sofa & show him pictures of all the trendy doggies in their lovely jumpers & coats??

my girl was like that, I couldn't move from
one side of the room to the other without her moving too! Drive me MAD (as I used to avoid moving if she was comfortable & settled 🙄🙄) but I SO miss her shadowing me now 🥲

What breed is he?

as for the oodie...

daxi or west highland maybe? St Bernard maybe not?

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination Yours sounds just like mine! It’s like they’ve got 1 eye open checking we’re still there- although like you, when he goes, I will wish I had him back, following me☹️

He’s a Shiz Tzu & portly🤣 but I have a big oodie!

someone was giving him away on FB 8 years ago!

Onthegrid · 26/09/2022 16:15

Not yet, today is the first day I have worn long trousers and socks to work in and I have added a lightweight cardi to the mix. Thermometer says 12c outside but they sun has been out today so my office/bedroom feel pleasant for now. I have decorators in from tomorrow so I am expecting doors to be open and the house to cool down lots but I will be holding out and using more clothes/blankets etc until they are done.

ilovebagpuss · 26/09/2022 16:26

We're trying to hold out until it's really dropped below 10 outside. We have a log burner to put on for a few hours in the evening and at the weekend. Just thinking that it can be really cold into April so longer we can hold out the better!
We will put the heating on for an hour in the morning and hour mid afternoon when it's really chilly.

The same people will think nothing of spending (wasting?) money on expensive hot drinks that they just carry around. I would rather put the heating on.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/09/2022 16:34

@Katypp Erm yes , which is why I think it's better people do a week with it on as they would normally have it , submit readings and gauge where they are at- same again in late October when new prices are in.

As another poster pointed out to me , some people were struggling last year too so it definitely wouldn't be any better- but I suspect there are some who were fine may be overreacting without actually seeing a bill. To be honest I would expect to be paying at least £150 plus a month for dual fuel even in a small household in all but summer. Probably more like £250 in a bigger house/household. If I check back and mine is like £350 for a month - I will stand corrected!!! (And be skipping the lunch time hour boost) !!

Ive got mine on now and timed and doing a weeks test and will do so in 4 weeks, basically to gauge the bills - if I need to drastically cut down (and im a lot in credit at moment) will do so at that point .

It's the same with food-- I fully admit to shopping mainly at M&S and Waitrose - but I do a lot of yellow stickers, 3 for £8 etc (fish and chicken products) don't buy snacks, cakes , ice cream, lollies or nice little nibbles and I cook and I don't waste much. My son isn't at home anymore but when he was he got what he was given too and snacks were apples, bananas, oranges, toast, cheap plain scones , crumpets , malt loaf etc - my food bills haven't gone up hugely, I've just stopped buying anything I think is poor value . Ive done the occasional Aldi shop too and see peoples trolleys loaded with tons of crap if I'm honest that don't actually constitute stuff to make a meal and could certainly be cut right down ( that's all classes and ages)

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/09/2022 16:36

whatsup00 · 26/09/2022 14:18

In case it's useful there's a few things you can do to make it more efficient -

clean all windows so as much light and heat as possible comes in
seal gaps with silicone sealant around windows/patio doors
get draught excluders
get heavy curtains in dark colours
replace all bulbs with low wattage LED ones
use those battery fuelled spotlights (i have some in a small room and they have lasted years just off two batteries).
I don't know what else..

@whatsup00

i have a couple of rooms, mid renovation & a garage without electricity.

coukd you possibly tell me exactly which lights you have, as the ones I've tried have been crap lighting & churned through batteries 🙇🏻‍♀️

TIA

Siouxtse1 · 26/09/2022 16:39

Not yet. The boiler gets serviced in the middle of next week. I'll probably program the heating after that, just for a couple of hours in the evening. Our house is rated G10 (rented from a housing charity with an exemption certificate). Heating is LPG which has just increased again and we can't change companies because the tank doesn't meet the latest regulations. 😟

I've built up over £250 in credit for electricity over the summer, but there is no alternative source of heating- no open fire or log burner. I've got a few electric heaters I can use for a small boost. Hoping it's fairly mild and just rains in the evenings so that I can mostly dry the washing outside.

Really looking forward to finishing a few courses so that I can finally rejoin the workforce and move somewhere better insulated and with cheaper utilities! 😀

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/09/2022 16:39

When we are all wearing a vest, t-shirt, shirt, thin cardigan, thick jumper and still feeling the cold through the day. We are still in t shirts until early evening when a cardigan goes on so it may be a while yet. We do have blankets in the house to use as well.

@Hugasauras thank you. I'll have a look at those when I get home!

whiteroseredrose · 26/09/2022 16:43

It is the Rose family law that the heating goes off on 1st April and not on until after 1st October. Always, not just for the energy crisis.

A while yet. I'm 8 months pregnant and it is keeping me very warm! We're still keeping the back doors open all evening for the dogs and haven't yet put the duvet back on the bed after we switched to just a sheet in the summer, but we have closed the windows at night now. Feeling very grateful being this pregnant because I usually very much feel the cold!
