When are you turning the heating on?

Assuming that you will turn it on at some point, is there a date or a temperature you're waiting for?

It's only 16 degrees inside my house right now and my hands are freezing! But somehow it feels wrong to put the heating on before October.

Not yet 19.8 in the house

And milder weather due this week

Blughbablugh · 26/09/2022 11:23

My thermostat is set to 16 degrees at the mo and it's in the coldest part of the house which is the baby's room. It's come on twice for 15 mins each time in the last few days. When it's October it will go up to 17 degrees. I have spent so much money sorting my damp problems out in my house that there is no way I'm letting it come back. I need to and will heat my house.

crossstitchingnana · 26/09/2022 11:24

My lounge thermostat hasn't gone below 20 degrees yet, so not for a few more weeks.

VeridicalVagabond · 26/09/2022 11:25

Have had it on all last week, husband had COVID and was freezing so opted to put it on. Now I'm working from home this week and I refuse to sit in a cold house, so I've got it on again. Guess we're starting early this year, normally don't put it on until late October.

Youaremysunshine14 · 26/09/2022 11:26

We popped it on last night for an hour to take the chill off, because it was 15 degrees. The rest of the time we snuggled under blankets.

StarDolphins · 26/09/2022 11:27

Friday I’ll be putting it on, my dog is getting his groom & is always freezing/shivering & our house is currently 16.4 so definitely getting cold enough to justify it.

ChevreChase · 26/09/2022 11:27

It's 17.5 through the house at the moment, and it did feel pretty chilly when I woke this morning, but I am going to stick it out a bit longer, and wait until it gets to 16c at 7am ish. I can stand the cold as long as it's a bright day, like it is where I am this morning - it's the grey days where I want heat, as otherwise it's just miserable all round.

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 26/09/2022 11:27

Hive tells me it is 22.5 degrees in the house, me thinks Hive lies. Grin

devildeepbluesea · 26/09/2022 11:29

Probably November, for an hour a day. We’re lucky that this is a very warm house and I’ve bought heated throws, hot water bottles and oodie-type things to take the edge off.

hopeishere · 26/09/2022 11:29

At the minute I'm just using the boost function. So it went on for an hour last night and two on Saturday night as it felt chilly.

Full on timed thermostat being on? No idea when we will do that! WFH meant I had to keep boosting it anyway last year. I might light the fire more in the room I work in.

Lellochip · 26/09/2022 11:29

What do people mean when they talk about 'switching it on' - do you all turn off the thermostat in the summer, or at the boiler? I've never turned anything off, just let it come on as needed, no matter the time of year

Hugasauras · 26/09/2022 11:30

We don't consciously turn it on but every room has thermostatic smart valves on radiator on various schedules so when it drops under a certain temp in each room at certain times it goes on. It's started to come on in mornings now - we are in north-east Scotland.

rainbowandglitter · 26/09/2022 11:30

We're nowhere near needing it yet. No idea what temperature the house is at either.

MrAutumnal · 26/09/2022 11:32

It’s 13 outside today and currently 18.5 in the kitchen (without the oven on). Haven’t had the heating on and don’t intend to.

Thinks it’s only 12 tomorrow so will see if we need a top up tomorrow evening as the house will have cooled down overnight.

Calmdown14 · 26/09/2022 11:40

I can't believe anyone needs the heating on all night in September my that's bonkers!

It's a tiny bit cooler here today but still pretty reasonable inside (now I've shut the bathroom window!).

I'm in North Scotland where the forecast has a high of 10 degrees today and 45mph winds. House is still a pleasant temperature and it's not particularly well insulated

Billyhargrovesmullet · 26/09/2022 11:42

Only when the children say it’s too cold, we’re lucky we’re in a terrace and seen to get heat from either side so house is always pretty warm without any heating

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 26/09/2022 11:43

It’s 13° outside and 18.6° in the living room. I haven’t put it on yet but we did light the wood burner a couple of evenings over the last three weeks.
Mine’s set for 18° by day and 14 at night, I reckon it’ll be on by the weekend as the weather’s going to be colder and wet, a miserable combination.
I have plenty of wood so will probably light the wood burner later.

7Worfs · 26/09/2022 11:45

It’s because I am co-sleeping and breastfeeding a newborn all night (and can’t use a duvet) and a 3yo who kicks his duvet off in his sleep.
If it were adults only household we’d just use our duvet and wouldn’t need the heating for a while yet.

LadyFromage · 26/09/2022 11:45

When I really need to.

I was cold earlier but it's just me in the house so I've double socked, slippered and put a vest on under my jumper. I am now much warmer, though my nose is icy to the touch Grin

emmathedilemma · 26/09/2022 11:45

I put mine on this morning when I got up as it was 16.1 degrees and i'm home all day so too cold. If i'd been going out to work I'd have left it off.

Wanda616 · 26/09/2022 11:45

Thermostat reckons it's 21° in our house. Doesn't feel it

womaninatightspot · 26/09/2022 11:45

I’ve started lighting the wood stove for a few hours in the evening. Leave the door open and that warm dry air goes upstairs and warms the bedrooms too. It’ll have to do until properly cold ( below 10 then central heating)

RosesAndHellebores · 26/09/2022 11:48

Thermostat is always set to 17.5. It came on automatically this morning. I switched from the 4.5 tog duvet to the 9 tog one yesterday.

Chemenger · 26/09/2022 11:49

We're in Scotland, and we have patio doors wide open most of the day. It's too hot at night inside, my guess is that heating will go on around November. The only source of heat at the moment is the dehumidifier we use to dry laundry, which is making the room it's in unbearably warm!

Midnights · 26/09/2022 11:49

A few days ago 😂 I can't bear being cold inside!
