Can anyone identify the creature leaving this poo on my lawn?

big patch of it, more appearing every night. Live quite rurally with woods near. Each poo is about 5cm diameter.

would like to know as it’s literally right in the middle of the fecking lawn and now becoming an issue to mow etc!!

Can anyone identify the creature leaving this poo on my lawn?

Pigeon is my thought.

PlatinumBrunette · 25/09/2022 14:03

Ooh that’s weird poo! I can usually ID most, but not that.
I’m thinking bird, not animal. Pigeon is usually more liquid ‘splats’.
will ponder further

BeanieTeen · 25/09/2022 14:05

Hedgehog with diarrhoea?

Mykittensmittens · 25/09/2022 14:06

I don’t think it’s pigeon. Whatever it is is coming back to use the same spot. I suspect dusk or nocturnal as both my office window and kitchen window overlook the garden and I’ve never seen any creature. We also don’t have any neighbours with cats.

@BeanieTeen wouldn’t it be smaller for a hedgehog? And why would a hedgehog keep specifically going back to the same point in the lawn? The behaviour is more like a cat marking or similar. It’s so odd. And stinks.

Need to put a ruler down so we get sense of scale Grin

I assume mammal not bird.

JudithHarper · 25/09/2022 14:07

I thought you meant something was crawling out of the poo, like a worm or something.

Wbeezer · 25/09/2022 14:08

That looks like Wood pigeon poo. My Mum complains about the mess they make in her garden. In my garden they mainly roost in a tree so the poos are more splatted (all over my hostas!).

sweatyannie · 25/09/2022 14:09

I'm googling 🤣

Hedgehog poo is black and not that shape.

PlatinumBrunette · 25/09/2022 14:11

😳 I’ve seen too much poo now in my googling! Wood pigeon comes up on similar images (I guess it depends on what they’re eating?).
if you’re really into it, you can mix it in a jar of water to see what food remnants there are there. But that may just be something us weirdos do!

Mykittensmittens · 25/09/2022 14:12

There are no trees directly above for a bird unless it’s on the ground walking. Why would a pigeon walk to the same spot and nowhere else and poo repeatedly?!

photo with strategically placed gardening glove for scale.

There are circa 40 poos!! More every day!

Goose?

Mykittensmittens · 25/09/2022 14:18

@Mol1628 looks like that sort of thing! But honestly, no geese anywhere near here!

It does look like bird poo.

Mykittensmittens · 25/09/2022 14:18

MikeWozniaksMoustache · 25/09/2022 14:24

Could it be worm casts? Although they look pretty big.

I have mysterious garden poop too. It’s very annoying isn’t it?!

pheonixrebirth · 25/09/2022 14:25

Looks like geese, we have it sometimes in the garden as the canal is nearby.

Mykittensmittens · 25/09/2022 14:26

absolutely can’t be a goose. No one near has geese and I’ve never seen or heard one here. No ponds or water. No canals.

We put a trail camera in to see what was pooing in our garden and eating our apples. Turns out we were being visited by a Mother and Baby Badger.........

PlatinumBrunette · 25/09/2022 14:29

Totally over-invested in poo!
iD would depend on your location, really. And the latrine aspect is unusual.

Found this, “Polecat droppings display the twisted appearance found in most mustelid droppings. They are similar in shape to American mink droppings, but do not contain fish remains. They are black in colour, around 6 – 8cm long by 1cm thick and have a rather foul smell, similar to foetid meat.”

Goose poo is usually green and full of equal length grass clippings.
