Can anyone identify the creature leaving this poo on my lawn?

big patch of it, more appearing every night. Live quite rurally with woods near. Each poo is about 5cm diameter.

would like to know as it’s literally right in the middle of the fecking lawn and now becoming an issue to mow etc!!

Can anyone identify the creature leaving this poo on my lawn?

Either Wood Pigeon or possibly a Pheasant, I’ve had the same in my garden.

SuperNoodle87 · 25/09/2022 19:03

Another vote for pheasant

DeathWinsAGolfish · 25/09/2022 19:10

I agree pheasant, we have it in our garden too.

Mykittensmittens · 25/09/2022 21:24

Ah!!! Well, I’ve not seen one, but last year we did have a pheasant! Maybe that’s right then.

still confused as to why it’s coming back to do it in the same place though. Why would it do that?!

Pheasant poo is, more 'tubular', isn't it?

Donttakeafence · 25/09/2022 22:23

I think wood pigeon. But I can’t help with the behaviour, it does seem odd

Blocked · 25/09/2022 22:32

Surely one animal couldn't produce that volume of shite in one night? That is multiple little turds there. Have you been putting kebabs out for the hedgehogs or something?

TrainspottingWelsh · 25/09/2022 22:38

Wood pigeon. Or at least it looks like the same stuff I’ve seen them do.
Can’t explain the behaviour but it’s not that unusual ime. I can’t put water in one corner of a paddock because they insist on treating it like a toilet. Ditto in similar scenarios, it’s only noticeable on yards and farms etc when it’s something you use, or in your case when it’s the centre of your lawn.
I suppose it’s not really that bizarre, plenty of other mammals and birds use specific areas.

Mykittensmittens · 26/09/2022 07:13

Thanks.

really not convinced about the pigeons. We get the odd one who sits on the top of a wooden archway near the back door and that poos there which kindly splats on the path underneath, and it’s wet and a mix of white and coloured. This poo is brown and much bigger - like 5cm across and not liquid really, more perfectly formed little pats - they are as high as they are wide - just like this - 💩

I’ll go out in a min to see if any more were there overnight. It’s gone on for a while - some of the early poos are now mouldy and furry!! Lawn was mowed about 10 days ago and DH swears there were none there then.

I honestly spend so much time at the back of the house if it was anything in daylight or unusual I would see given the amount of times it’s happening.

I have a camera due to arrive tues but of course I’ll have to set it up etc!

Are they always that charming consistency?

Mykittensmittens · 26/09/2022 09:37

They are @BadNomad some are squashed flat but that’s because DS kicked his football through (grim, sorry!)

Is there an overhanging tree? Anywhere a bird could perch?

Rwealere · 26/09/2022 10:58

I’ve had similar and assumed (hoped) just pigeons who seem to be on the increase in our area. I’d be very interested to learn what your camera reveals when you get it mykittensmittens so hope you’ll report back - please

Mykittensmittens · 26/09/2022 12:22

@sevenbyseven no overhanging tree, no

i will report back yes!

hopeishere · 26/09/2022 12:41

Looks like pigeon. But as you say odd to be in one place.

Arucanafeather · 26/09/2022 12:47

can you put a couple in a glass of water like pp mentioned. Seeing what food remnants are in there would definitely help with identification while you waiting for your Camera.

BadNomad · 26/09/2022 12:49

I did a lot of Googling 😅I do agree that it's a bird or group of birds of some sort. Maybe arriving early morning to get the worms. Throw some bread down and see who comes!

Mykittensmittens · 26/09/2022 13:11

I’m up working at 6 and the only birds I see on the lawn are magpies under the bird table (not close to this), a crow family who chase the magpies and then small song birds.

I’ve now reminded myself in the spring i twice saw a stoat. Never seen it since and it was flying like a rocket down the garden. Could it be that?

Maybe send the photos to your local Wildlife Trust and see if they can identify it? They are usually very helpful with this kind of query!

Pixiedust1234 · 26/09/2022 13:18

My vote is wood pigeon as well. Its not from a meat eater as they tend to be darker. Do you have any "city" pigeons? We get a few every morning but they center around the bird feeders for excess seed or where the squirrels bury their peanuts. They are quite precise in their "hunting" zones.

moofolk · 26/09/2022 13:19

JudithHarper · 25/09/2022 14:07

I thought you meant something was crawling out of the poo, like a worm or something.

Ha!

Sixsmith · 26/09/2022 13:21

Get a bear trap down. Catch them in the act.

Pine marten link seems very feasible

CointreauVersial · 26/09/2022 13:25

I'm fully invested in Poo-gate now. Grin

SummerHouse · 26/09/2022 13:33

Disappointed we have not got to the bottom of this yet. 😁
