I'm neither a Royalist nor a Get-Rid-Of-The-Monarchy person, as basically the Royal Family is totally irrelevant to my life, but I think you're both being very judgemental and also rather lacking in imagination here.
Not only is this a unique historic moment, since the late Queen was a record setter in terms of length of reign and the momentous things that she lived through and helped people cope with when Royalty was pretty universally revered, it's also the case that for thousands of people she's just always been there, a part of the everyday world they are familiar with - me included, she was crowned not long before I was born - and her death and the knowledge that this is the end of an era has hit many people hard.
There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that for the people who're motivated to queue for so long for a chance to pass, not very closely, the closed coffin of the Queen, the experience will be one they'll treasure and they'll know that they too have played a part in history, as of course the depth of devotion so many have shown to the Queen will be documented along with the details of her life.
People have been reported in the news camping for up to 3 days just to be first through the doors of a shop's sales opening ... how much more are they going to be prepared to do for something this important to them? I bet to the people queuing it seems a very small price to pay.
