anyone queuing to see the coffin in London atm?

I am wondering how long the queue is and how the organisation is working out. Are there enough toilets? Is it true that the wristband allows you to leave and come back?

I’m on Bankside. Queue stops and starts. Toilets in the Globe. Not got to the wrist band/portaloo section yet.

sunglassesonthetable · 14/09/2022 23:35

Surely it would be better to drive the coffin around london, or stick it in a location which is able to deal with all those people.

It's dealing with all those people. It's an amazing beautiful building.

Queueing for 30 hours just to walk past a box with a flag on it is utter madness.

Watch the feed. For you, maybe.

Mythreefavouritethings · 14/09/2022 23:35

Keep warm there, Mrs W, all the best to you

BungledBundle · 14/09/2022 23:35

Good luck, Mrs Wombat. It seems a nice peaceful evening and a moving thing to be a part of. Off to bed now but yes as another poster said, tempted to get up at 3 and check on the live feed!

Mydoghealsmyheart · 14/09/2022 23:42

If anyone is watching the live feed on tv, can you explain why the left sided queue is much more orderly/single file than the right side? Using the carpet as a guide, the right side is all over the place! Is there a reason that I’m just not working out?

snowballer · 14/09/2022 22:52

I've somehow found myself watching the live feed of Westminster Hall and now can't tear myself away. I've watched them change the guard three times so I must have been watching for an hour. It's weirdly peaceful and intriguing all at the same time.

Oh thanks for that. I'm heading there right now. Online of course (too far away)

MrsAvocet · 14/09/2022 23:43

I'm not particularly interested in the royal family generally but this is a massive historical event so I've be been following things and I have to say I am absolutely blown away by the organisation of everything that's happened since the Queen's death was announced.
Yes, I know there have been plans for many years, but actually putting it all into practice so quickly and efficiently is an incredible achievement. It sounds like the attention to detail that has been put into managing the queues is to the same high standard as everything else. I hope the weather stays good for everyone who is waiting.

Firsttimecatlady · 14/09/2022 23:44

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 14/09/2022 23:26

There's an accessible access with timed entrance so you don't have to queue.

I just don’t understand why they aren’t doing this for everyone? What am I missing? Why can’t people not log into a website, or go to one of a number of locations around the city to book a time slot, and then turn up turn?? so many other places use this approach now.
maybe there’s an obvious reason I’m missing…

It's beyond madness now .

All mass/social media driven sadly :(

I'm neither a Royalist nor a Get-Rid-Of-The-Monarchy person, as basically the Royal Family is totally irrelevant to my life, but I think you're both being very judgemental and also rather lacking in imagination here.

Not only is this a unique historic moment, since the late Queen was a record setter in terms of length of reign and the momentous things that she lived through and helped people cope with when Royalty was pretty universally revered, it's also the case that for thousands of people she's just always been there, a part of the everyday world they are familiar with - me included, she was crowned not long before I was born - and her death and the knowledge that this is the end of an era has hit many people hard.

There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that for the people who're motivated to queue for so long for a chance to pass, not very closely, the closed coffin of the Queen, the experience will be one they'll treasure and they'll know that they too have played a part in history, as of course the depth of devotion so many have shown to the Queen will be documented along with the details of her life.

People have been reported in the news camping for up to 3 days just to be first through the doors of a shop's sales opening ... how much more are they going to be prepared to do for something this important to them? I bet to the people queuing it seems a very small price to pay.

Antarcticant · 14/09/2022 23:48

Just placemaking.

The man ushering on the right is a bit more harried I think and is rushing people through.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 14/09/2022 23:49

Also on the right is where the people with mobility issues come in against the flow and have to walk past the wrong way to then join the flow going the right way. That makes it look slightly more disorganised.

JestersTear · 14/09/2022 23:52

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 14/09/2022 23:03

Is it open all night then?

Yes. It's open 24hrs until 6.30am on the 19th.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 14/09/2022 23:52

I think it’s to stop people not turning up abd and to avoid DDOS/disruption by people booking loads of tickets to intentionally deprive other people. If you’re physically there, you are more likely to be serious. I may be wrong but I like that it isn’t dependent on a website, it would be like ordering toilet roll and booking online shopping delivery slots in 2020 all over again otherwise.

Jellykat · 14/09/2022 23:53

Watching, but really not understanding why the right hand side is getting all the extra people joining from the front of the building.. seems unfair if you happen to be on that side as theyre getting less time to pause. (and hassled from the portly man)

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 14/09/2022 23:53

That was to @Firsttimecatlady but it didn’t tag apparently

MinnyMous · 14/09/2022 23:55

Pootle40 · 14/09/2022 19:53

30 hours according to the daily Mail

I think they were saying 5 hours this evening. Queues not as long as expected. I imagine it will be busier at the weekend.

TrashyPanda · 14/09/2022 23:57

We went to see her in Edinburgh.
joined queue at 23.20, got into St Giles just before 04.00.

it was incredibly well-organised

everyone was rather subdued, talking in lowered voices. Very moving.
being part of such an historic event was incredible.
im so glad we went and will never forget it.

Bunnycat101 · 14/09/2022 23:57

The whole thing is a bit bonkers but I bet the people who are there probably do feel part of something quite momentous. It surely does have to be one of the best organised queues ever. It must be a nightmare for the police re logistics as well so clearly a lot of thought has gone into it.

The queue seems to have become its own thing. I’d expect the weekend will be even busier. Has there ever been a queue with its own YouTube channel before?

Hope you're all right.

do they give an estimate of how long it will take?

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 14/09/2022 23:58

There's a big gap in the queue suddenly.

kateandme · 14/09/2022 23:59

Hmmph · 14/09/2022 22:58

I love watching it too. It's so peaceful and lovely watching all the different people and their shows of respect. It's so nice just to see ordinary calm lovely people being silent and showing respect. No noise, no phones, no bad behaviour. It restores my faith in people

Me too. Calming.restorative. Thoughtful kind of feeling.
there’s an odd sort of meaning to it all which made me realise today why they do it.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 15/09/2022 00:00

Thanks for explaining that IdisagreeMrHochhauser

Jellykat · 15/09/2022 00:01

Quite a few gaps, and did anyone just see the man taking photos on the left??

FlowerTink · 15/09/2022 00:02

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 14/09/2022 23:58

There's a big gap in the queue suddenly.

Yes it seems very quiet on the livefeed now
