anyone queuing to see the coffin in London atm?

I am wondering how long the queue is and how the organisation is working out. Are there enough toilets? Is it true that the wristband allows you to leave and come back?

I've somehow found myself watching the live feed of Westminster Hall and now can't tear myself away. I've watched them change the guard three times so I must have been watching for an hour. It's weirdly peaceful and intriguing all at the same time.

It's strangely moving, isn't it @snowballer ? We're not too far from Edinburgh. I slightly wish I'd gone now.

sunglassesonthetable · 14/09/2022 23:00

Yes you can go to the loo, that’s what the wrist bands are for. I am so impressed with the organisation, hundreds of stewards, scouts, Samaritans, st John’s ambulance, 500 toilets, they’ve sign language interpreters on hand, bag drop, it’s peak Britishness. The info is on the gov.uk website

god making me feel quite emosh. And that's just all the organisation. 😁

Genuinely wondering where people are weeing. Surely you'd need to go after that length of time. Can you leave the queue and jump back in?

But if you’re on MN you have access to the Internet? I’m nowhere near London but radio, catch up TV, Sky and newspapers have been telling me for at least two days about the coloured armbands and the freedom to leave the queue for food and loo breaks. All online, on my phone, in the palm of my hand …

AdoraBell · 14/09/2022 23:01

I went today. Arrived at Waterloo around 11-ish, ten mins to use a loo and locate right place to join the queue. Lots of Porto loos all around. By 6:30 pm I was out and headed back to train station. I think the papers are scare mongering about the queue.

sunglassesonthetable · 14/09/2022 23:01

I love watching it too. It's so peaceful and lovely watching all the different people and their shows of respect. It's so nice just to see ordinary calm lovely people being silent and showing respect. No noise, no phones, no bad behaviour. It restores my faith in people

Yes. So plain and simple and touching.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 14/09/2022 23:03

Is it open all night then?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/09/2022 23:03

I won’t be going, but almost worth it IMO to see the incredibly historic Westminster Hall, which isn’t generally open to the public.
As a child I was taken to the lying in state there of Winston Churchill - showing my age there, aren’t I?

Me too. Strangel can't stop watching.

SausageinaBun · 14/09/2022 23:07

Are there any options for people who can't stand for hours on end? There must be loads of people who would like to go, but would struggle or find it impossible.

Wow. What a thing to have experienced.

Omgwhatisthat · 14/09/2022 23:08

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER Westminster Hall is open to the public. I’ve been there about half a dozen times in the last 2-3 years. It is an amazing building with a great history to match.

Stephthegreat · 14/09/2022 23:10

I’m also amazed that people want to do this, i liked the queen but this seems so extreme.

Im also wondering why the constant streaming of her lying in state, I’m flummoxed.

Are you still watching? They've changed to an outside view, I hope everything is ok!

No, and I’m now rather dreading our pre-planned weekend in London for a non-negotiable appointment. Hopefully none of them have any business in Shoreditch.

You'll be fine in Shoreditch I should think. I used to work there, it's unlikely to be impacted by this.

It says "for those who wish to pay their respects digitally"

My nan (love her) popped it on and sat on the sofa and said a little prayer, all comfy in her slippers. She made me stream it on to the TV for my phone when I said there is a live feed.

I popped in on her at tea time today.

Sandy89xx · 14/09/2022 21:56

Trust me if I could stand 30 hours in the rain to see my nan again I'd be there in a flash

What, to see her dead body in a coffin?

You either get it or you don't.

CapMarvel · 14/09/2022 23:22

Surely it would be better to drive the coffin around london, or stick it in a location which is able to deal with all those people.

Queueing for 30 hours just to walk past a box with a flag on it is utter madness.

PriamFarrl · 14/09/2022 23:24

Wonnle · 14/09/2022 22:19

It's beyond madness now .

All mass/social media driven sadly :(

Yes totally social media. Which is why no one turned up when her father was lying in state. Oh, wait a minute.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 14/09/2022 23:24

I've been watching the live stream on and off. It's strangely hypnotic. It reminds me of the early days of Big Brother when I used to watch the live stream all evening when I knew that very rarely anything would happen.

There's an accessible access with timed entrance so you don't have to queue.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/09/2022 23:27

this country = queue

wonderful thing to do in this case and 5 hours is totally achievable

bedtimestoriesforbears · 14/09/2022 23:28

Has anyone been and "come through the other side" yet - as in queued and paid tribute. What was it like?

Do you feel it was worth the wait? I assume you do as it is very much a commitment - just interested in opinions?

Can I ask those queuing - do you live fairly close to London or are you from all over the UK?
