anyone queuing to see the coffin in London atm?

I am wondering how long the queue is and how the organisation is working out. Are there enough toilets? Is it true that the wristband allows you to leave and come back?

MarshaBradyo · 14/09/2022 22:20

Day

stravagante · 14/09/2022 22:21

Can you get into the National Theatre easily enough? Bizarrely worried about getting there on Saturday!! 😂

Oh bore off.

As if you'd have a clue what's driving it.

You don't sleep.
You can't take a sleeping bag or chair or anything and are expected to keep moving pretty much constantly.
Of course you can't overtake! If you could it wouldn't be a queue!
Think everyone has timed wristbands so it would be obviously if you started walking past everyone and got to the front 2 hours before the rest of your timeslot. Plus can't imagine people would just let you push past then!

I don't understand why they've organised it to be constant moving, it's nuts and really cruel to leave everyone shuffling along for hours.

They could have people stopping the queue at the 'half mile left' mark, then everyone in the last half mile shuffles along until they've nearly all gone in, while the other few miles of queue get to stop completely and sit on the floor etc. Then when the last half mile is nearly empty the rest of the queue would be allowed to all walk forward at a decent pace, then when they've caught up it all repeats again. At least that way you'd walk half a mile at a decent pace then get to stop for an hour or two.

It’s not raining
-it’s a lovely evening
-close to our home
-lots of cameraderie
@UnshakenNeedsStirring
nothing wrong with my priorities. Kids have left home. Not working tomorrow. It sounds like quite a nice night out with DH if we take our favourite snacks. We’re on our way no

Hope it works out for you OP. Something to remember.

LegArmpits · 14/09/2022 22:35

Absolutely batshit 🤣🤣🤣

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/09/2022 22:38

Good luck to those queuing or planning to. If I was in London or surrounds I would probably join you.

(I hasten to add not for 30 hours, that's mad, but for 5 or 6 maybe. Fuck I've queued 2 hours to go on a bloody rollercoaster and this is a momentous event in British history).

It isnt constantly moving. They are stopping and starting it, for example only a small number of people were on Lambeth Bridge when I went past- they were being held on the embankment at Lambeth palace.

don't forget to report back tomorrow OP

Oh that's better then, a PP said people were expected to constantly move which sounded horrendous.

chickenwings22 · 14/09/2022 22:46

Genuinely wondering where people are weeing. Surely you'd need to go after that length of time. Can you leave the queue and jump back in?

I think you’ll find people queued all night to see George VI lying in state back in 1952. They queued then, and are queuing now, out of love and respect for their deceased monarch.

I hope knowing that helps to put a smile back on your face.

snowballer · 14/09/2022 22:52

I've somehow found myself watching the live feed of Westminster Hall and now can't tear myself away. I've watched them change the guard three times so I must have been watching for an hour. It's weirdly peaceful and intriguing all at the same time.

So many brain washed people waiting in the rain to see coffin of a rich lady. People have their priorities wrong

🙄

That's what the wristbands are for, and there's temporary loos, faith teams, St John's etc its all been planned quite well.

Not social media driven. People did it for the Queen Mother in 2002, and also for the Queen's father in the early 1950s. Arguably, fewer people are going now than then, given the much wider media coverage. Back then, people were much more likely to want/need to see it for themselves.

My mum wanted to go as a mark of respect. Her desire to go is most definitely nothing to do with social media. Thankfully she decided that amount of time on her feet was beyond her, but had it happened a couple of years ago, she would definitely have gone.

GyozaGuiting · 14/09/2022 22:56

Yes you can go to the loo, that’s what the wrist bands are for. I am so impressed with the organisation, hundreds of stewards, scouts, Samaritans, st John’s ambulance, 500 toilets, they’ve sign language interpreters on hand, bag drop, it’s peak Britishness. The info is on the gov.uk website

Dept for Media and culture

GyozaGuiting · 14/09/2022 22:58

Cross post @00100001 😊

ThisGirlCantAlways · 14/09/2022 22:58

Dh is there, queued from 5.15pm, first 1.5miles fast and you think you’re nearly there. Last part really slow. He thinks he’ll be in there in about 30mins. So just over 6hrs ….

I love watching it too. It's so peaceful and lovely watching all the different people and their shows of respect. It's so nice just to see ordinary calm lovely people being silent and showing respect. No noise, no phones, no bad behaviour. It restores my faith in people

Me too, I'm reminded of when I got obsessed with watching David Blain in his box!
