Has anyone else become more of a royalist over the last few days?

I have.

I have always said I loved the queen, but wasn’t sure about Charles and the future of the monarchy beyond Elizabeth II. I love a bit of tradition and pomp, but not too much, and actually feel sorry for people born into the Royal Family, rather than jealous of them.

I have also been reminded about just how awesome the Queen was.

However, I feel an unexpected warmth towards Charles, and look forward to seeing him and Camilla step up.

I would definitely say I am more of a Royalist than I was 4 days ago, and was just wondering if anyone else can identity with this?

Presidents come and go, they're forgotten within weeks.

This is so true. I literally can't remember a single former USA president's name. No one can. Honestly, just ask around, it's mad. Ask your friends/family/colleagues to name a former USA president and not a single one will have anything.

Ask them to name five former English monarchs though and they'll be straight in there.

Really?

I am not sure what that says about your knowledge of US history....

DS (17) could name quite a few and their role in world history

These threads remind me of the Brexit threads. 99% of people were adamant that we were going to remain and didnt know a soul that wanted to leave.

Then there was the shock that we were leaving.

Now when these threads start the vast majority of people say 'down with the monarchy!' but as we can see thousands of people have already gone to pay their respects to the queen, tens of thousands will line the streets of London waving their flags when Charles officially takes the throne and we will all have street parties and celebrate. When push comes to shove we are country that is proud of its self despite what social media likes to portray

Plenty of people support the Monarchy - and you will see those people at the funeral etc.

Plenty of people want to see it abolished - by definition, you won't see those people at the funeral.

And then there is indifference. Not for or against. Just indifference

I’m pleased about the bank holiday and will NOT be wasting it being forcefed a funeral.

im going to go on a long walk, as far away from the media and maudlin shit as l can get.

I'll be watching the funeral.

BUT - my watching the funeral does not mean I support the Monarchy. It's because it's historically interesting. Like the proclamation yesterday.

Yes, exactly. By definition you aren't going to see the people who are either opposed or indifferent to the monarchy in a comparable way to those who attend some part of the procession and funeral, because we are not gathering around a focal point.

There is in addition a third group who regard the event as interesting and significant in itself, who might hold a range of views on the desirability of the institution. The jubilee/coronation version of this is people who go to the pub for the fun day because they've got the day off and their mates are there. It's delusional to imagine that everyone whose kid goes on a bouncy castle at a street party or similar is doing so because of their attitudes to the monarchy.

With all that said, the test of the enduring popularity of the monarchy isn't how many people are on the streets in a period of flux and whilst our media produces a persistent diet of hagiography. It's not even how much people enjoy getting pissed on the coronation bank holiday. It'll be in a few years time, when people have got used to Charles as the monarch and he's being judged in that context.

I'm loving all the ceremony that the UK is so good at. I love watching a bit of history being made.
Yup. Spending millions on pagentry when ordinary folk may well be going without food and heating in the next few months and there isn't a magic money tree (apart from when it concerns huge businesses)..

I love it all but feel sick to the stomach when I imagine how much these next 10 days and coming weeks/months of change are going to cost.

Our one and only flirtation with republicanism at the end of the Civil War went so well that 11 years after the execution of Charles 1st the people were desperate to see the restoration of the monarchy and an end to the rule of Cromwell. He was corrupted by the power of the position, as I suspect a few recent political figures would have been (Presidents Blair or Johnson anybody?). And as Trump showed a democratically elected president only works if they will accept the democratic decision of the people to get rid of them. I'd be in favour of a much slimmer RF set up and Proportional Representation to make sure we had a Parliament that really reflected the votes of the electorate

Always have been. I think there is a distinction to be made, though. There are monarchists and there are royalists. Royalists are fans of the Royals, monarchists are the opposite of republicans. You don't have to like individual members of the Royal Family to be a monarchist or a royalist and you don't have to be a monarchist to be a royalist. I don't like Charles or Andrew, although Andrew is no longer an acting Royal and Charles cannot continue his advocacy while he is the sitting King.

When I was in my early 20s, I was very anti-monarchy, I never saw the point in them. I thought they were freeloaders and I hated the pomp and circumstance. Then I became curious enough to research them one day and I went down a huge rabbit hole of British history. I very quickly ate my words and went from ignoramus to an avid supporter of the monarchy because of what I'd learned and a genuine newly found appreciation for the identity of my country. There was also plenty of pomp and circumstance on my wedding day and I never complained about that. It was nice to feel like a Princess for the day.

One thing that has always made me laugh is that I have never seen or heard a single complaint from anyone about Bank Holidays. Unless they work on Bank Holidays, in which case that's the nature of the job rather than the Bank Holiday itself.

cakeorwine · 11/09/2022 19:49

I'd hope that we could still keep the pomp and circumstance without a Monarch.

I think the election results should be announced by a fanfare of trumpets and someone proclaiming the overall results.

That you, Biden?

cakeorwine · 11/09/2022 21:20

I wonder how many people who are from outside the UK can name many UK Monarchs?

Worriedaboutethics · 12/09/2022 12:05

We have lost so much and gained nothing from Brexit I am sad people keep wanting to rip up what we have.

i think our system could only be improved with PR.

Less of a royalist here.
The takeover of TV & government, cancellation of sporting fixtures etc seems all wrong to me.
