Has anyone else become more of a royalist over the last few days?

I have.

I have always said I loved the queen, but wasn’t sure about Charles and the future of the monarchy beyond Elizabeth II. I love a bit of tradition and pomp, but not too much, and actually feel sorry for people born into the Royal Family, rather than jealous of them.

I have also been reminded about just how awesome the Queen was.

However, I feel an unexpected warmth towards Charles, and look forward to seeing him and Camilla step up.

I would definitely say I am more of a Royalist than I was 4 days ago, and was just wondering if anyone else can identity with this?

Yes

Stripyhoglets1 · 10/09/2022 16:57

Yes. I find it really interesting and fascinating watching history be made.

I think Charles plan to slim down the number of working royals will be a good move and think they will move even more so that way as time goes on - but they are a foundation stone of this country and just having politicians would be so dull.

tentontobias · 10/09/2022 16:59

Absolutely not. I've surprised myself by being a bit sad and even shedding a tear over the queen's death. But I absolutely think that the monarchy needs to go as it has no place in modern Britain. And I will be furious if we as a country pay towards the coronation at at a time when we are seeing the most significant financial and cost of living crisis of our lifetime.
And I haven't checked it it actually is true, but apparently a BBC newsreader said the death of the queen was more significant than the financial crisis. If they did indeed say it, then that right there is evidence that queen needs to be the end of the line for the RF as you could not possibly be more out of touch with the needs and priorities of the ordinary citizen Angry

I just started a similar thread didn’t see this one

Atm yes.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 17:01

Christ no.

They we’re a waste of space before and now are going to cost even more with a nsssive coronation whilst the rest of us struggle to heat our homes.

Get rid please.

These threads remind me of the Brexit threads. 99% of people were adamant that we were going to remain and didnt know a soul that wanted to leave.

Then there was the shock that we were leaving.

Now when these threads start the vast majority of people say 'down with the monarchy!' but as we can see thousands of people have already gone to pay their respects to the queen, tens of thousands will line the streets of London waving their flags when Charles officially takes the throne and we will all have street parties and celebrate. When push comes to shove we are country that is proud of its self despite what social media likes to portray

I agree with some of that. But personally I struggle to accept the fact that so many people think that "sovereignty" is more important than working together, and that a family who by accident of birth are seen as important and needed as our "rulers" in this day and age. It's just sad and a bit scary.

PupInAPram · 10/09/2022 17:07

I'm the opposite. Could put up with the ridiculousness of paying a huge sum of money to keep one (very) extended family in luxury because the Queen 'bossed' it. Charles has brought out the staunch republican in me. 🤣

Yes. I can understand the POV of republicans but looking at many elected leaders around the world, I don't find the idea of a President any better. I'd rather have a monarch with a deep sense of duty to the country, which they do have and god knows I wouldn't want their job.

I also love all the pomp and pageantry. This country can feel like it's going down the pan sometimes (and elected leaders aren't helping here) but the tradition and ceremony is something that Britain does really well and does give me a feeling of pride.

I haven't been very fond of Charles in the past but I do think he's been changing perceptions as he's aged. He seems like quite a reserved person but it was lovely seeing him at the Jubilee celebrations as a grandfather, with Louis sitting on his knee. He's been preparing for this role his whole life, I think he'll do it well.

Think all the anti royals need to accept they are here to stay

BiscuitLover3678 · 10/09/2022 17:17

Ive found the opposite. I’ve always respected the Queen and am amazed how she saw her duty through for so long.
Now she’s gone, I find the whole idea of the monarchy quite ridiculous and feel like it would be the perfect time to let it go. I don’t know how that would work in practise so don’t expect it to happen right away if at all, but it’s my feelings in answer to your question!
I don’t love or hate anything I am just indifferent to most of them and considering I don’t believe they are appointed by God, I think a lot of it is quite ott.

BiggerthanIusedtobe · 10/09/2022 17:18

Well I have on Twitter, where people have been so nasty. According to people there the poor Queen was responsible for slavery, colonialism, racism and probably bloody hay fever for all I know. None of the above were her fault, and colonialism it was almost the opposite, in many cases!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 17:20

You hope.

My Dd does politics A level . There was much discussion in her class about how no one cared about the monarchy, and why was everything shutting down?

They are an outdated institution.

Desmorelda · 10/09/2022 17:21

@fluffinsalad still a shit idea leaving the EU even if MN called it wrong. Fwiw living up in the NW I knew it would be a close call because people round here really were fed up with the tories and wanted to lash out at Cameron and Osbourne.

The Queen dying has affected me personally more than the cost of living crisis so far, so that BBC newsreader wasn't totally wrong for a lot of people. And l am an ordinary citizen on an average wage. Could change over winter l guess.

waffless · 10/09/2022 17:23

Yes, I have.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2022 17:23

No. Not even a little bit.

cabansunset · 10/09/2022 17:25

Yes absolutely I know what you mean OP

MsJuniper · 10/09/2022 17:26

Absolutely not. I felt sad when the Q died as she was so familiar, and I agree with those who have said it is a gilded cage - but that is all the more reason to dismantle this system.

When people hear the word "president" they think of the US system but I would prefer a setup more like Ireland, so the elected president has a ceremonial role but the PM still runs the country.

Harriet0101 · 10/09/2022 17:26

Yes! I always liked the royal family but even I was surprised at how much I cried when she died. It really hit me how significant she has been in everyone's lives and how much she served the country. I've also loved watching it all on TV and can't wait for the king's coronation, especially because this is first time this has happened in my life and might be the only one I see.

waffless · 10/09/2022 17:29

Twitter is full of haters and agenda pushers so for me it does not represent or influence the majority.

Beezknees · 10/09/2022 18:27

No, I've become even less so. I personally will not be watching the funeral, and putting a film on instead. I have nothing against the queen, but I'm anti royal in general and she wasn't a friend or relative of mine so I'm not overly invested.

Beezknees · 10/09/2022 18:28

They may be here to stay, but I'm certainly not getting on my knees for them.

This is true, everything is extreme on Twitter. There's a lot of lies spread; distasteful comments and downright nastiness about many topics. This week it's the queen- if anyone saw what that Uju Anya professor tweeted. Like religion, I feel defensive over something I was never too bothered about before, and of course, it is sad, since she was such an important historical figure, gone.

purplecheesecat · 10/09/2022 18:58

No - if anything my republican views have been solidified. And saying we have an obligation to be deferential are forgetting that we have freedom of speech about this and can express anti-monarchy sentiments if we like.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 19:00

I’m pleased about the bank holiday and will NOT be wasting it being forcefed a funeral.

im going to go on a long walk, as far away from the media and maudlin shit as l can get.
