Has anyone else become more of a royalist over the last few days?

I have.

I have always said I loved the queen, but wasn’t sure about Charles and the future of the monarchy beyond Elizabeth II. I love a bit of tradition and pomp, but not too much, and actually feel sorry for people born into the Royal Family, rather than jealous of them.

I have also been reminded about just how awesome the Queen was.

However, I feel an unexpected warmth towards Charles, and look forward to seeing him and Camilla step up.

I would definitely say I am more of a Royalist than I was 4 days ago, and was just wondering if anyone else can identity with this?

Fuck no, if possible even less. All this rolling news, things being cancelled being forced on us.

SirChenjins · 10/09/2022 16:10

I’ve been surprised at how upset I feel about the ending of an era and I’m very glad that we’ve been spared the warring that seems to go on with electing presidents. That doesn’t mean I don’t want a radical shake up of the monarchy.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 10/09/2022 16:11

Very, very much the opposite!

My head says no

My heart says yes

Alltheholidays · 10/09/2022 16:13

No, the very opposite! I’m hoping the death of the queen will herald it’s decline!

LegArmpits · 10/09/2022 16:15

No. Off with their heads.

ImJustNotMeAnymore · 10/09/2022 16:18

I have always supported the monarchy, love the royal family and everything that they stand for.

Ahf22 · 10/09/2022 16:23

I thought that with his interference in politics and outspoken views on eg environment may end with him trashing the monarchy for good. But then there’s always William to the rescue.

Greengianttrees · 10/09/2022 16:24

Oh gosh, no!

did you notice how often Charles used the words tradition, service and duty? Without saying exactly what this meant?

And nothing about what they get - unearned privilege and obscene wealth courtesy the taxpayer.

and the talk about “my heir” and granting loads of titles when most people are worried about basics...it is like I was thrown a few centuries back!

contrast this with people who actually earned their living, like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates giving their wealth away, not amassing more and more and hoarding it for their “heirs” .

honeykt, William and Kate should get real jobs. We need one HoS, other countries manage it.

fluffinsalad · 10/09/2022 16:25

Yes me. I am happy to keep the monarchy.

Presidents come and go, they're forgotten within weeks.

This is so true. I literally can't remember a single former USA president's name. No one can. Honestly, just ask around, it's mad. Ask your friends/family/colleagues to name a former USA president and not a single one will have anything.

Ask them to name five former English monarchs though and they'll be straight in there.

😅

To be fair, on the former, it's taken some effort, but I'm pretty sure I'm managing to forget a guy named Donald. On the latter, if you go with John, George, Richard, Edward, Elizabeth or Anne, you're in with a pretty good list.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 10/09/2022 16:29

No.

couchcritter · 10/09/2022 16:33

The opposite, I didn't care before and now think we should get rid.

RumpleDumple · 10/09/2022 16:35

Absolutely not

LumpyandBumps · 10/09/2022 16:35

I had great respect for the Queen, which she earned by many years of service, including times when she must have been upset when her husband was ill, etc, and was surprised by how upset I was at her passing.
I have sympathy for Charles as he has just lost his Mother, but I would have preferred him not to become King. If there is a referendum regarding abolishing the monarchy during his reign I will vote in favour of abolition.

TempsPerdu · 10/09/2022 16:36

No. I was pretty neutral on the royal family beforehand but the enforced mourning, blanket media coverage and nonstop sycophancy is rapidly pushing me towards all out republicanism. At the very least I think the monarchy needs to be modernised and slimmed down.

WanderingFruitWonderer · 10/09/2022 16:36

Not really. I'm indifferent to the royal family. Neither a monarchist or a republican. That hasn't changed. I don't mind if people love them, or the opposite; as long as I'm not forced to do either.

Blueberrywitch · 10/09/2022 16:39

The opposite for me. I can see certain benefits but Britain would be better to do away with the most unfair and obvious elements of the class system. Yes there is an argument that at least these particular rich people have a “duty” and would it really be better to have all the money go completely behind the scenes…. But on balance I think much better to dismantle and have a proper functioning democracy and do away with titles all together. They are a relic from history and different power structures and the new generations who inherit titles have done absolutely nothing to earn the massive privilege that comes with them - at least in the olden times the various barons etc would have had to Game of Thrones style fight for what they had.

And the whole point being that an outpouring of love for one person who did a good job… great…. But what if you get a person who does a bad job? You can’t do anything about it!

fluffinsalad · 10/09/2022 16:41

These threads remind me of the Brexit threads. 99% of people were adamant that we were going to remain and didnt know a soul that wanted to leave.

Then there was the shock that we were leaving.

Now when these threads start the vast majority of people say 'down with the monarchy!' but as we can see thousands of people have already gone to pay their respects to the queen, tens of thousands will line the streets of London waving their flags when Charles officially takes the throne and we will all have street parties and celebrate. When push comes to shove we are country that is proud of its self despite what social media likes to portray

AskAda · 10/09/2022 16:47

Same here OP. I find the emotion eminating from the royal family and the public so touching. A monarch who can show vulnerability to the nation over the loss of his mother is extremely endearing. I have to be honest, I've never really liked Charles. Mainly, because of how he took part in manipulating a teenager in to marrying him etc. However, with age, knowledge, experience people can and do change. I hope he continues his mission for a more ecological and sustainable Britain.
