Has anyone else become more of a royalist over the last few days?

I have.

I have always said I loved the queen, but wasn’t sure about Charles and the future of the monarchy beyond Elizabeth II. I love a bit of tradition and pomp, but not too much, and actually feel sorry for people born into the Royal Family, rather than jealous of them.

I have also been reminded about just how awesome the Queen was.

However, I feel an unexpected warmth towards Charles, and look forward to seeing him and Camilla step up.

I would definitely say I am more of a Royalist than I was 4 days ago, and was just wondering if anyone else can identity with this?

No. Keener than ever to get rid of them to be honest.

TartanGirl1 · 10/09/2022 13:40

Nope not at all!

pawkins · 10/09/2022 13:41

I’m not a royalist but enjoy the soap opera element of reading about their lives. I also like reading about the Dpanish royal family. I have been intrigued with the carefully orchestrated and swift transfer to Charles and can easily see why some people may feel more a sense of pride and ‘belonging’ and history with recent events.

The ‘divinity’ part of one particular family being someway entitled to this privilege and wealth would be enough for most people to think though surely?

No

heldinadream · 10/09/2022 13:47

Yes. History and tradition run deep and the meaning and function of it all is, I believe, very complex.
I was of the 'abolish the monarchy after the Queen dies' train of thought before. Now I think it's actually not the right time yet. It still has meaning and value for too many, not just here, but worldwide. I found Justin Trudeau's words especially moving and heartfelt. I don't think all of that tradition can be ripped away and dismantled overnight, it would be too destabilising.

ChaToilLeam · 10/09/2022 13:49

A million times no.

Hbh17 · 10/09/2022 13:50

Yes. I already supported the monarchy, and loved The Queen, but this week has made me more convinced that it is the right way to have a Head of State. And we can already see that king Charles will make an excellent king, who will serve his people.

whoopdedo · 10/09/2022 13:52

No I feel the opposite. I loved the queen and I'm now done with the royal family

HebeSunshine · 10/09/2022 13:55

Yes I have.
I didn't really think much of the Queen before, but her death made me a bit teary. Having a new King and living through this important part of history is quite special too.

JaninaDuszejko · 10/09/2022 14:12

We're seeing the advantages of Royalty at the moment, the swift transfer to a new head of State who is well prepared for the role. Even if he was to die tomorrow he also has an heir who is prepared for the role. And the media commentary is designed to encourage us to accept this as right and proper. Compare to the last presidential election in America and the Capitol riots. So an increase in royalist feeling is to be expected, whether that is weeping outside the gates of Buckingham Palace 🙄or being interested because you are aware that this is a moment in history.

On the other hand the Royal Family are very much in a gilted cage that the less robust members clearly struggle with (Harry, Diana, Margaret, Edward VIII, and so on back through history). And the primogeniture principle is clearly nonsensical.

So I'm finding it all fascinating but also still think you shouldn't be head of your country by an accident of birth.

Decidualcast · 10/09/2022 14:14

Definitely not. I have a far greater appreciation for Liz as a person, but I can’t get excited/emotional about the scale of the fuss. I hope the monarchy is scaled down and eventually abolished.

BringOnAutumn · 10/09/2022 14:16

Yes.

I love the pomp and seeing history in action. I think Charles seems nice and he didn't have a choice that he was born into royalty.

All the money is being pumped back into the economy. It's not happening for free.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 10/09/2022 14:17

Nope. Totally opposite. The sight of Camilla gives me the rage.

IHateWasps · 10/09/2022 14:18

Absolutely not.

MotherOfCatBoy · 10/09/2022 14:20

No.
I am against the concept of Royalty.
Much respect to the Queen.
But my views on this are separate from any single individual member of the family who happen to occupy that position in our society.
It is an anachronism. It is anti democratic. It is classist. It should go.
Felt the same ever since I became politically aware in my teens, and that was a long time ago. No particular event has changed it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/09/2022 14:21

Nope. I have admiration for QE2 and I am aware of the way she shaped the world I live in (and some sadness this is ending) but I think the family is rotten to the core.

MarshaMelrose · 10/09/2022 14:22

Yes. Presidents come and go, they're forgotten within weeks. But the monarchy goes on and they're invested in the country. Imagine if a president had died. We'd have had electioneering, back stabbing, maneuverings, elections. Ugh. This has been so dignified and seamless. It feels like there's consistency and coherence.

itsnotdeep · 10/09/2022 14:23

no. Completely the opposite.

AmongstTheCosmos · 10/09/2022 14:31

No. The royal family is an anachronism and they should bow out gracefully and stop leaching off the taxpayer.

Only because Charles is a fairly anodyne character. If Andrew was next in line in a hereditary monarchy, there would be mass panic and fury right now.

We're just lucky to live in peaceful times, that's all. The hereditary system is a disaster waiting to happen.

Mumoblue · 10/09/2022 15:39

No. Abolish the monarchy. Disgusting anyone can get excited about the sheer waste of money that’s going to happen over the next few weeks/months. Guarantee I’ll hear some bullshit about how it “brings the country together”, all while people can’t afford their heating and we have more children in poverty than ever.

Wallaw · 10/09/2022 15:46

No, the opposite for me too.

I greatly respect and admire the queen, and am in awe of her part in history, the places she went and the people she met, but think the whole concept of hereditary monarchy has, rightly, had its day.

And, which I don't think Charles is a bad person, I think this is pretty disgusting. Possibly worth trotting out the next time there's a thread about people born and raised in Cornwall not being able to afford housing.

Presidents come and go, they're forgotten within weeks.

This is so true. I literally can't remember a single former USA president's name. No one can. Honestly, just ask around, it's mad. Ask your friends/family/colleagues to name a former USA president and not a single one will have anything.

Ask them to name five former English monarchs though and they'll be straight in there.

felulageller · 10/09/2022 16:08

No was against anyway but this week has been insufferable.

DillonPanthersTexas · 10/09/2022 16:09

No. I remain as indifferent as I was before
