Has anyone else become more of a royalist over the last few days?

MeanMrMustardSeed · 10/09/2022 12:56

I have.

I have always said I loved the queen, but wasn’t sure about Charles and the future of the monarchy beyond Elizabeth II. I love a bit of tradition and pomp, but not too much, and actually feel sorry for people born into the Royal Family, rather than jealous of them.

I have also been reminded about just how awesome the Queen was.

However, I feel an unexpected warmth towards Charles, and look forward to seeing him and Camilla step up.

I would definitely say I am more of a Royalist than I was 4 days ago, and was just wondering if anyone else can identity with this?

Yeah you're right. Nobody talks about Ford, Kennedy, Eisenhower or Nixon any more. They're just nonentities really.

You might. People will know Kennedy because how many programmes are made about Kennedy! But I bet you lots of people wouldn't know Eisenhower or Ford or Johnson or Truman or Carter. I can't remember the last time I heard a conversation about any of them. Correction, I heard Carter's name mentioned recently, can't remember why and nothing to do with being a president.

Badtasteflump · 11/09/2022 00:59

OP you have fallen hook, line and sinker for the well crafted, decade in the planning, PR stunt of the century.

This.

for sure, it makes me feel very patriotic 🇬🇧

Hambledy · 11/09/2022 01:10

People will know Kennedy because how many programmes are made about Kennedy!

Which would imply he's probably culturally significant. Nixon too, if only for the introduction of the suffix -gate, which you still hear everywhere including on reality TV.

And nobody has forgotten Trump for Christ's sake, or Obama.

As for the others, I can't speak for your own lack of political interest. Maybe that's how people who like the monarchy think? You know, narrow, parochial etc.

kathleen567 · 11/09/2022 01:22

No it’s been the opposite for me. Seeing Charles being like “peasant clear my desk” today was quite enough

MarshaMelrose · 11/09/2022 01:54

Which would imply he's probably culturally significant.

Because he slept around, was married to style icon and got assassinated leaving a young widows and children behind. How many people do you think would know about the Bay of Pigs? Mind you, I'm pretty sure Kennedy'd be glad they don't.

I've seen people on here not even know what Watergate was or what the scandal was about. I'm pretty sure they'd make all sort of assumptions of deep throat.

I expect they would remember Trump. He just left power. And Obama, the first black president.

How sad that you had to resort to insults. 🥱

Germolenequeen · 11/09/2022 02:00

No no no

Had thought I might feel a bit sad when she died as she's always been around but don't at all.

All the sycophancy is making me feel nauseous tbh.

That bloody dysfunctional family care not one iota for "the people" and I just cannot understand how anyone thinks otherwise.

Yes. I've been watching with my grandson's, though they're too young to remember it.

basilmint · 11/09/2022 02:20

I have always supported the idea of the monarchy and continue to prefer the idea of a monarchy than a presidency. I do think Charles has the opportunity to strip things back which I think would be a good thing. I also don't think it will be long before Australia and maybe others move towards becoming a Republic, which is understandable.

basilmint · 11/09/2022 02:25

I also think that people who couldn't manage to name 5 US Presidents would struggle to name 4 British monarchs and would get stuck somewhere around Victora, two Elizabeth's and Henry VIII. I'm mid-40s and there have been 8 American presidents in my lifetime. Surely most adults could manage to name the ones that have been around in their own lifetimes!

Given the quality (or lack of) whom we elect in this country I am quite happy to have an unelected head of state.

Quite. At least the King or Queen has to be politically neutral.

Lesleymyname · 11/09/2022 02:46

I completely agree with you, yes to be fair they have had a life of complete luxury and never wanted for anything but I am sure there has been some days she has just wanted to put a sick note in and have some time off like the rest of us but she hasn’t. I am not happy that I can’t retire til I am 67 instead of 60 but she has never retired and not as if she needed the money she could walked away and still had a very privileged life that only some can imagine without having to do constant public appearances. Think about when we were in lockdown and we were all moaning that we couldn’t do anything, god bless Queen Elizabeth she has been in lockdown since she became our cherished Queen and never complained and never explained, think some people could take a lesson from that.

Nat6999 · 11/09/2022 02:56

No, I'm interested because it's a historic event that most of us have never experienced before. After seeing what it is estimated to going to cost the country & the fact that as royals they aren't going to pay inheritance taxes I'm disgusted. To think that there will be a coronation to pay for next year as well when there are people who can't afford to heat there homes & there is a major cost of living crisis it would have been good if it had all been scaled back somewhat.

MarshaMelrose · 11/09/2022 03:22

13 in my lifetime. I'm pretty sure most people couldn't name the last 13 presidents. I'm not even sure most Americans could!

Lesleymyname · 11/09/2022 03:23

And they don’t pay inheritance tax because they don’t acutely own the properties they belong to uk tax payers. Charles couldn’t sell Buckingham Palace and put build some semi detached houses 🤦‍♀️

Notonyerwelly · 11/09/2022 03:51

Nope. After a respectful period of mourning for the Queen, we should get rid of this charade.

anderosonnmj · 11/09/2022 04:41

No. Although I respected the Queen, I have no interest in the current monarch or his heir.

anderosonnmj · 11/09/2022 04:43

Can I just add that I'm sure that all the property, land and treasure would now be in the hands of some oligarchs now if it did not belong to the Crown. Governments are always looking to raise money by selling off this country's assets.

Nyfluff · 11/09/2022 05:16

No, she did some disgusting appalling things that hurt so many people. Just vile that it is not talked about and the media presents such a different situation. I too hope they don't spend a lot of money when the country is struggling so much.

strugglingmum82 · 11/09/2022 06:10

The opposite with me. We should have ended the monarchy with Elizabeth

Twotwotwotwo · 11/09/2022 06:46

No, the whole thing has the opposite effect on me.

i would describe me as fairly apathetic. They were a symbol of inequality but they brought lots of soft power/tourist revenue s fine.

Now I am very pissed off. My young daughters medical treatment is likely to be delayed by months by the funeral. I can't get any mainstream news on Ukrsine. The kids keep having it rammed down their throatd at school causing upset.

The costs to the economy (so real people) are huge in the middle of a cost of living crisis sparked by Putin's war. The stress cared by cancelled childcare arrangements and appointments, cancelled weddings and what about other people's funerals now.

Bring on the Republic and proportional representation.

daysayso · 11/09/2022 08:25

@Nyfluff I am tryin got research at the minute because I keep hearing this a lot and struggling to find the facts.

I appreciate she protected Andrew but what else has she done personally that's so bad? )not saying she hasn't done bad things btw this is a genuine questions!)

AhNowTed · 11/09/2022 08:35

I'm Irish and happy to declare I'm a republican.... so..

I have a lot of respect for the queen. She did her duty extremely well, without complaint, and had a huge work ethic.

But I will never understand the British obsession with the RF.

It's propped up by a press and the establishment in a mutually beneficial relationship.

And folks seem oblivious to this con.

And their most avid supporters seem to be those who have the least.

I'll never understand it.
