Has anyone else become more of a royalist over the last few days?

I have.

I have always said I loved the queen, but wasn’t sure about Charles and the future of the monarchy beyond Elizabeth II. I love a bit of tradition and pomp, but not too much, and actually feel sorry for people born into the Royal Family, rather than jealous of them.

I have also been reminded about just how awesome the Queen was.

However, I feel an unexpected warmth towards Charles, and look forward to seeing him and Camilla step up.

I would definitely say I am more of a Royalist than I was 4 days ago, and was just wondering if anyone else can identity with this?

Given the quality (or lack of) whom we elect in this country I am quite happy to have an unelected head of state.

HikingforScenery · 10/09/2022 19:11

I’ve moved from being indifferent, now leaving towards against

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/09/2022 19:20

To paraphrase what I've said on another thread I wasn't a Royalist when she was alive I certainly haven't turned into one because she's dead.

No. The opposite in fact.

Same

RoobarbandCustud · 10/09/2022 19:24

I feel the same OP. My OP has a voluntary public facing role in addition to his paid work. There are times when he is on a platform when the National Anthem is sung. He stays silently seated. He's a Republican. Some people moan, but most see it as a strength of our democracy. In my head I don't believe in monarchy, but I have huge respect and affection for this Queen and wishing King Charles III the best. Im wondering who I would prefer for Head of State and how we would choose them.

WoodlandMummy · 10/09/2022 20:05

Have i fuck 😂 its made me even more strident in my republican views, and v happy that the majority of young people, whose opinion in a few years will matter much more than most of the royalists on this thread, feel the same as me and don’t see the point in financially and emotionally supporting such a useless, overprivileged, out of touch, and frankly, dysfunctional family.

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 10/09/2022 20:40

Yes, even though I am (or was) a lifelong Republican.

I'm 23. I want the royal family here to stay

ImPickleRickSpartacus · 10/09/2022 21:08

The posters on here attacking everyone for not mourning have also made me hate the royals more .

No. The opposite in fact.

I was about to post this!

daysayso · 10/09/2022 21:09

No the opposite it's made me realise how ridiculous they all are and how they have absolutely no place in modern society

Notplayingball · 10/09/2022 21:10

DH said everyone should have 11 day sick note from their GP for national mourning we all need to go through. With a fortnight worth of Kleenex to boot.

daysayso · 10/09/2022 21:11

I'm a world we we are doing so much to promote equality it blows my mind how anyone can support the royal family - it's mind boggling to me.

You cannot stand for equality if you promote the royals and are pro royalist IMO

Rosewaterblossom · 10/09/2022 21:16

If anyone has ever watched The House of Cards.. no way would I want a president! I know that's a TV show but I imagine it's not too far fetched sadly 😐

PomRuns · 10/09/2022 21:16

Yes. Some of the anti posts on here are pretty awful but not representative though I don't think. Majority people I work with feel the same so was supposed by the number of people on here who'd prefer a republic.

Zib · 10/09/2022 21:21

If we didn't have a monarch as head of state we'd have an elected politician.

Politics by its nature is divisive. Those who seek power may not be the best people to be the nation's uniter or figurehead.

President Blair? President Johnson? President Cameron? President Corbyn?

I think that the monarchy is better than any other system. I find the late Queen Elizabeth's duty and service pretty inspiring.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 10/09/2022 21:21

Yes definitely.
To those who say have a president, they would cost just as much or more and you still might hate them and be whinging on about them and their associates.

Itsallyellow22 · 10/09/2022 21:22

Me too OP. Always loved the Queen and Prince William. Was on the fence about Charles but was impressed by his address to the nation. The monarchy is on balance a good thing imo.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2022 21:23

I can’t believe people still think selecting a monarch as the firstborn from a particular family is appropriate in modern society.

Nobody would ever suggest that if a country was starting setting up its governance from scratch.

I'm not bothered by the line of succession personally because it's pretty insignificant. It's nothing more than a historical tradition, with no bearing on anyone's actual life so they can crack on with firstborns. They don't actually rule the country so 🤷🏻‍♀️

The idea of a president would be strange, and agree with pp we wouldn't be any happier, then we'd all complain about that person instead.

lurchermummy · 10/09/2022 22:04

@heldinadream my sentiments exactly

Hambledy · 10/09/2022 23:36

Lol. Never having a democratically elected head of state is significant.

I mean, one may or may not approve of it. You obviously do approve.

But it's significant.

FrecklesMalone · 11/09/2022 00:18

OP you have fallen hook, line and sinker for the well crafted, decade in the planning, PR stunt of the century.

baky · 11/09/2022 00:23

No

Presidents come and go, they're forgotten within weeks.

This is so true. I literally can't remember a single former USA president's name. No one can. Honestly, just ask around, it's mad. Ask your friends/family/colleagues to name a former USA president and not a single one will have anything.

Ask them to name five former English monarchs though and they'll be straight in there.

But US presidents are leaders of the western world. They have so much influence on our lives. Of course we remember recent ones.
But name me the last 3 Polish presidents. Or any 3 Polish presidents. Or Portuguese presidents. Or Italian presidents.

If our king or queens died every 4 or 8 years, the Americans would probably remember a few. But the queen's been on the throne since 1952. How many us presidents would the average British citizen remember from the 1950s, 60s and 70s?
