Cannot get over the queen was working two days ago…

I’m not a royalist by any means but I do feel sad with the queens passing, she seemed a lovely old lady and like many has been a constant all throughout my life…

But OMG I cannot get over than literally 48 hours ago she was still doing duties and standing shaking Liz’s hand looking though frail, smiley and every bit the part, just how?!

She really was incredible.

Well done Lizzie, dutiful to the end, just as she promised.

BiscuitLover3678 · 08/09/2022 21:56

She’s incredible but it makes me sad in a way to think how hard she worked, doing her duty above anything else right until the end. Poor woman didn’t just sit in a chair and rest did she! So amazing.

She was hardly down the mines or scrubbing loos...

No, but the people who did those things were hardly doing them at the age of 96, were they?

Yes, she had an extraordinarily privileged life, but she also worked like a trooper, is it so hard to see that those things aren't mutually incompatible? There are/were plenty of unimpressive Royals, if you want to have a go at them, Margaret or Airmiles Andy. The fact that they weren't held in any public affection tells you how people saw through a freeloader, but respected the Queen' genuine commitment.

herecomesthsun · 09/09/2022 06:32

Andrew's behaviour was poor. Harry appears to have been acting to protect his wife and family, in the main. Tad different there.

Hastingsontheup · 09/09/2022 06:37

I don't think Harry was mentioned at all was he ?

LovingTheseAutumnSnippets · 09/09/2022 06:38

There were whispers that she had cancer - that had taken hold fairly quickly. Who knows if they are true.

I hope that is not the case. I will hang my head in shame, and be very upset with some of the royals, if she was ill, and she still put everyone else first.

I'm not a medic, clearly, but the way she deteriorated was not unlike what I have seen before. Very elderly relatives of mine in their 90's just started to waste away, not eat and just sleep a lot, and just slowly deteriorated. I hope she died very peacefully, knowing her life had been so worthwhile and how much she was loved and respected.

nannybeach · 09/09/2022 06:39

RIP Elizabeth. Was expecting the usual bile on here,am pleasantly surprised. No she did have a life of comfort, but she wasnt dished out on special occasions, she started her day at 6am, carried out my royal duties than the rest of the "form". Have never met anyone else of that age,who still actually has a job. I more noticed her fingers were pure white, rather than the darker skin .. which is common with age. Also wondering on sudden stroke or heart attack. She shrunk after Phillip died.

Not many people keep to their word, but she absolutely did and to the best of her ability. She was an amazing lady.

Tubs11 · 09/09/2022 06:42

@BiscuitLover3678 don't be sad. My mum was like this, worked up until the day she died even though she had cancer and we begged her to rest. But she lived a full and happy life and got so much enjoyment from being physically and mentally active. I image the Queen did too, it keeps them young and has been a valuable life lesson for me.

Shortjanet · 08/09/2022 22:21

I dunno, I'm actually really sad to think that she was still having to work at 96 years old and within two days of death. I wouldn't want that for myself or any of my loved ones. Admirable on her part, but was it really a fair expectation?

I feel the same. What a cruel institution Royalty is.

RudsyFarmer · 09/09/2022 06:58

She was born into a role. She didn’t turn her back on it or walk away from it. She never disgraced the country with her behaviour. She worked diligently and I guess her only failing wax being unable to help her children make good decisions.

I’m very thankful she can rest in peace now and I hope Charles doesn’t fuck it all up.

ThickCutSteakChips · 09/09/2022 07:07

I like to think that she held on for Boris to have to come and see her to end his stint as PM, because she wanted to tell him to his face what a huge cunt he is.

Then she could go...

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 09/09/2022 07:12

The poor old Queen, she was some lady.
I'm not any kind of monarchist at all but I really admired her work ethic and sense of duty.
The whole Royal line, for centuries, all the way back to William the Bastard were a big festering heap of scandal - murders and thefts and sex all over the place and greed and quite a lot of unbridled mayhem and cruelty. One of the few reasons that we have a positive image of what royalty is is because the Queen was such an upstanding, hard working wee woman.
I'm unexpectedly sad that she's gone.

Hibye23289 · 09/09/2022 07:15

I was thinking the same!! It is crazy that she was pictured 2 days working before and then gone!!

Trixiefirecracker · 09/09/2022 07:28

Some people decide to die, know it sounds odd but my mum did this. She had really just had enough, she told us the day she was going to die and then she did. No long drawn out death. She was just tired and had enough. Maybe Elizabeth did the same. They were made from different stuff back then.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 09/09/2022 07:29

did i read she had a stroke?
anyway, she was 96
she was absolutely in failing health
she saw out boris and welcomed in Liz Truss
she promised to work until the end, and was our servant

SerendipityJane · 09/09/2022 07:30

Yes. Puts all those 80 year olds whinging about having to work into perspective doesn't it ? As I am sure we will be subtly - and not so subtly - reminded in coming time.

Truly a life well lived.

vera99 · 09/09/2022 07:34

I do wonder if it was Covid that shaved a few years off her life. Her mum got to be 104 and was pretty robust until nearly the very end. I fully expected her to get to 100. If so then that's also part of the real tragedy that we have gone through. It certainly put Boris's reputed let the bodies pile high in stark relief.

herecomesthsun · 09/09/2022 07:35

One of the disadvantages of a hereditary arrangement for Head of State is that (unless the person retires/ resigns/ abdicates) you are left with that person even if, say, they become unwell.

I think HM was pretty invested in the idea of her family continuing its historic role.

So she wouldn't have wanted to appear ill or incapable; she wouldn't have wanted concerns about her health to be adding to the uncertainties we already have in our political climate. I suspect she would have seen that as bad for the country (and The Firm).

As well as having a commitment to work and duty, from what we know of her.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/09/2022 21:55

I love that she died in Scotland with her dogs where she was happiest

I'm really cheered by that

I was just thinking that.

A lot of the royal stuff can be England/London focused but she and her husband loved Scotland too. Presumably she choose to spend her final days here. To see her wearing the thistle coloured kilt in her last photo is touching.

Lovemusic33 · 09/09/2022 07:38

She did look poorly 2 days ago, her hand looked bruised (possibly from having a cannula in her hand?) the tips of her fingers were white? She was unable to travel so the PM/s travelled to her. I’m sure she used every ounce of energy she had to do the hand over, technically she had too or the handover would not be complete (it’s not something someone else can do). She was amazing and dedicated but it’s in no way a shock, she looked poorly and very frail.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/09/2022 06:44

I feel the same. What a cruel institution Royalty is.

Not Royalty, her choice - or at least her promise. She pledged a lifetime of service and she delivered that. Far more than was generally expected of a monarch. I sometimes wonder if she lived long enough to regret that promise.

glittereyelash · 09/09/2022 07:42

It's a lovely photo of the queen but I do remember thinking her hands look very mottled. My mums looked similar when she was close to death.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 09/09/2022 07:42

i like to think of her going for an afternoon nap and just not waking up having had stoppage of the heart.

The adventures she has had, the places she has been, the people she has met, she must have been knackered!

It was time.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 09/09/2022 07:46

I’m with you OP - just 2 days after that appearance she was gone! She definitely went downhill after Prince Philip died. I’m not a particular fan of the Royal Family but have always admired The Queen & surprised myself by really sobbing when I heard the news. Couldn’t imagine a world without her in it. Sure I’ll feel the same when David Attenborough dies. You just want some people to live forever!
