Cannot get over the queen was working two days ago…

I’m not a royalist by any means but I do feel sad with the queens passing, she seemed a lovely old lady and like many has been a constant all throughout my life…

But OMG I cannot get over than literally 48 hours ago she was still doing duties and standing shaking Liz’s hand looking though frail, smiley and every bit the part, just how?!

She really was incredible.

I think you have missed my point…

I’m not shocked that she was poorly and near the end of her life, on the contrary and even more astonishingly that despite this she put on her pearls, painted on her famous smile and posed for one more iconic handshake/appearance/picture.

In all fairness she probably had a team of people to meet her every need, put her pearls on for her, make her comfortable, adjust her cardigan, bring her tea. She was pretty well looked after in her old age, we can't compare her in any way to your average 96 yr old in terms of ability to pose nicely for a photo.

Is anyone else watching the coverage on the BBC? They keep showing the same group of ppl infront of the Palace, all just stood on their phones and waving at the cameras. Feels a bit disrespectful! Out of the whole group there is only one lady has been stood, looking as if she is there to show respect, not get on TV!!

Whatthe4 · 08/09/2022 22:41

I've never been at all interested in the royal family so I'm surprised at how sad I feel about the news of her passing.

That last photo of her is beautiful. What an incredible person and queen, to be so dutiful until the very end.

RIP.

I was talking with a colleague the other day about how some people seem to 'Wait' to die. They want to see a particular event or date and then its like they're happy to go then.

I wonder if she was waiting to make sure Bojo was gone. Then once she knew the PM was sorted, she could rest easy.

I can't imagine she thinks Liz is any better. Not like it would have been a relief to have her take over. Even more if ab embarrassment than the last one ...

I love that she died in Scotland with her dogs where she was happiest

I'm really cheered by that

Me too

Many people die while working.

Amazon workers for example.

bellsbuss · 08/09/2022 22:44

DD and I both said on Tuesday that we didn't think she would see the week out.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 08/09/2022 22:47

Duty above self.

But I also wonder if she was thinking 'my first prime minister was Winston Churchill, my last is not going to be Boris fucking Johnson' and simply refused to die until she'd made Truss official.

ThickCutSteakChips · 08/09/2022 22:29

Imagine having to spend your penultimate full day on this earth with Boris Johnson Sad

Irrelevant to this thread. It's about how well she did, and how admirable she was, not your opinion on Boris.

I don’t feel like it’s out of the blue. I think there’s been hints she hasn’t been well for a long time. Less royal duties, seen in public less, vague excuses…I wonder if she had been ill for some time. I do think she powered through to see her 70th jubilee celebrations and possibly Boris go! The picture of her shaking Liz Truss’ hand shows a big bruise on the right. I had a bruise like that after I had a cannula in my hand..I wonder if they gave her some fluids in the days before she met Liz…consummate professional to the end. I hope she didn’t suffer to do that meeting. Hope she’s at peace now.

I agree I don't think it was out of the blue- she'd been doing less and less, and looking frailer and frailer for a while now. And the big bruise on her hand was a glaring sign that all was not well with her health.

It is poignant that she was still working two days ago, but at her age health issues can deteriorate really quickly.

Anyway I'm glad she was able to see the back of Boris and see another woman take on a prominent role before she died.

Pinkyxx · 08/09/2022 23:05

She always said she'd never concede the throne and she really meant it.. So glad she had her final days where she was happiest. Awe inspiring lady, much respect to her. A glowing example to us all.

OnTheBrinkOfChange · 08/09/2022 23:08

I would have thought she had a heart attack or stroke. She looked very well a couple of days ago so it's obviously not that she was just deteriorating.

Bumpsadaisie · 08/09/2022 23:34

I think she thought she just had to forge on to get PM no.15 sorted, and once she'd done that then her body and mind said "right love, time to put your feet up".

Quite right too. I hope she and Philip are up there having a laugh together about how she pulled it off.

I completely agree. In fact I started a thread on here a few days ago to say that once Liz was PM HMtheQ would go. It was deleted.

I'm gonna be telling my pathetic staff who can't turn up for a shift and they're young and healthy. Puts them to shame.

I’m not surprised they don’t turn up if that’s the attitude you take with them.

Never understand why people say things like this.

Booklover3 · 09/09/2022 00:35

Never thought I was particularly a royalist… in fact no I’m not at all.

I still cried when I heard. Surprised myself actually.

You could tell she was very ill in the last photos as her facial skin was a bit yellow… bruised and blue hands… but what a radiant smile. She looked genuinely very happy to be there.

She will be missed. There won’t be another one like her.

Redglitter · 09/09/2022 00:40

I'm so glad she did meet the PM on Tues. That photo of her smiling is going to go down in history - the last photo of her. It's lovely that although looking frail, she does look well & happy.

Incredible to think she was gone 48 hours later

colouringindoors · 09/09/2022 00:48

I don't think we'll ever see that sense of duty or commitment to service again.

I saw the bruise on her hand and immediately thought cannula. But I also saw the gleam in her eyes. I'm pretty sure she wanted to be there.

I too suspect a stroke or heart attack last night which was a game changer.

RIP a hugely impressive woman.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 09/09/2022 00:54

She really was incredible, she without doubt lived life to the full and can now rest in peace and leave us to reflect on a life she devoted to her duty.

HaveringWavering · 09/09/2022 00:56

Does nobody think that it could be BECAUSE she did the PM meetings that she then declined so quickly? In other words she pushed herself too hard and it brought on something acute like a stroke. Allegedly she was with BoJo for 40 minutes. Anyone would lose the will to live faced with that.

She was going to go some time soon though, I admire how she worked to the end. She was incredibly lucky not to have developed dementia by 96.

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 09/09/2022 01:11

I kind of agree @HaveringWavering but for different reasons. Having her hair and make up done, getting dressed up for the occasion, plus the effort of the actual meetings themselves - it must have been exhausting for her. She looked so radiant in that last photo, despite being so obviously frail - such a beautiful, warm smile. She said she would serve her whole life and she did just that. She was a remarkable woman and her passing is a great loss.

Tangled123 · 09/09/2022 01:15

I walked past an old supervisor of mine one day when he was wearing his work uniform. A few days later, I was at his funeral. He was only in his 50s. I will never forget that but working until death will become a lot more common now thanks to woeful wages and provision for pensions we have.
Fair play to the queen for welcoming another PM but she had been turning down work for a while now and not everyone will have that luxury.

nocoolnamesleft · 09/09/2022 01:16

It was a lovely picture, but at the time I thought she looked incredibly frail. Credit to her for holding firm to what she clearly saw as an essential duty.
