I'm not really a Royalist, but this is sad news. The fact it has been announced in the HOC makes me think she must be really quite unwell.

She is just such a constant, a link to a world that no longer exists. A person that actually believes in duty to the country.

Her family wouldn’t all be rushing there unless it was considered very serious 😢

Badger1970 · 08/09/2022 13:29

I'm not sure that this needed to be made public.

If it is the news everyone thinks it is, may the God she has served so stalwartly through her life guide her on this part of her journey.

Absolutely this. And when the time comes. May flights of Angels sing her too her rest.

I think it’s to sort of soften the blow of the announcement when it comes and probably very soon.

I think it’s setting the scene (as a pp mentioned) because it’s huge global news and don’t underestimate the reaction of the nation. This is prepping for our benefit, not the queens.

berksandbeyond · 08/09/2022 12:59

Yes I think this is the beginning of the end sadly. We are being prepped for an announcement. What a baptism of fire for Truss...!

Stroke of good luck more like. No eyes on her for weeks.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/09/2022 13:32

The announcement for George V was rather gentle. "The kings life is moving peacefully to its close" hope the same can be said of his granddaughter.

cathyandclare · 08/09/2022 13:32

Prince William is travelling up to be with her, there’s no way to stop the media finding out. I think the announcement was respectful and appropriate. She is almost certainly been cared for in peace and privacy at Balmoral.

Couldnothappenlater · 08/09/2022 13:32

@PaddleBoardingMomma i absolutely agree. I know there are haters, but there are more lovers of the Royal Family. I believe the "gentle" updates are to prepare us for what is coming, and by the sounds of things it may not be that long

lollipoprainbow · 08/09/2022 13:34

I'm watching sky and they keep pausing making me think it's imminent really.

It's probably some sort of protocol to make "us" ready. I think it would be worse if we got the newsflash.

Not a royalist either but feel a sense of shock that this is likely the end for her, even though she's in her mid 90s. For William to be going up also it must be very serious and I'm guessing for goodbyes.

My grandmother in her 90s passed away last year and she was very fit and well and 3 weeks later had died. It happens so quickly at that age.

My nana is 95 and declining, she's like a totally different person now.
Sorry for your loss Nana's are special 💐

Ewetoo · 08/09/2022 13:35

This is very sad news. She met Liz Truss & welcomed the new primister, such a professional at 96...she can rest now, her job is done. I'm in tears typing this, she has done so much for the UK & is clearly deteriorating quickly

unicormb · 08/09/2022 13:37

My 4yo is home early from her Reception half day and I'm having to explain to her that the Queen is very poorly and very old and might not be queen for much longer. 'Maybe she has a really snotty cold' I mean, yeah, what do you say to that?

CaveMum · 08/09/2022 13:37

They had no choice but to make an announcement, William and Charles, and no doubt the rest of the senior Royals will have had to cancel engagements and for all of them to do so on the same day would just set the rumour mill rolling. Better to get out ahead of the news.

When the time comes I suspect they won’t make an immediate announcement, they’ll keep it under wraps for a few hours to let the family have some peace. When her father died the announcement wasn’t made until 10.45am and said he had died in his sleep in the early hours.

IHateWasps · 08/09/2022 13:38

I don't think anyone in this country is prepared for this,

I am. I've just subscribed to Netflix so I can avoid regular TV for the next, however long. Do you honestly think that we're all going to be in pieces over this?

calmlakes · 08/09/2022 13:38

It is a very odd thought. I'm in my late 40's and she has always been there.
I will be sad to see her go.
The institution is daft but she worked hard and with decency for decades.

MrsAvocet · 08/09/2022 13:38

I'm no Royalist but it makes me sad. She is the only monarch that most prople alive in this country now can remember and it's going to be a big change.
From a personal point of view, she was born in the same year as my late parents and whilst obviously her life has been very different to theirs, there are connections. They married in the year she became Queen and had similarly aged children and grandchildren. They were very much "New Elizabethans" having served in WW2 when her father was on the throne and then starting afresh as a young family in her reign in that period of post war difficulties but hope. So I feel in a way that her death will cut a last tie with them and their generation, if that makes sense?

Somethingsnappy · 08/09/2022 13:38

I don't want her to leave us. The only way I can put it into words is... It makes me feel like a small child might feel when their parent leaves them to face something alone, like the first day of school or something. A bit shaky and anxious. She's just always been there.

I hope she knows how loved she is, even by people like myself and others on this thread, who aren't royalists.

Unforgettablefire · 08/09/2022 13:39

spiderlight · 08/09/2022 13:06

She's been such a constant throughout my life - I feel genuinely sad at this news even though I'm not a royalist. I suddenly found myself becoming fond of her when I saw the image of her photobombing a selfie at the Olympics a few years back - her smile reminded me of my mum's sense of humour.

Bless her that lovely smile. Looks like she knew what was going on there and joined in 😄

inigomontoyahwillcox · 08/09/2022 13:40

I'm with many of you in that I'm not in any way a monarchist, but am finding myself quite tearful about Queenie's condition.

I think it's the constant, the staunch commitment to her position, and that we really do feel we know her and her story so well.

I hope her passing is calm, peaceful, pain free and surrounded by love.

CaveMum · 08/09/2022 13:40

Princess Anne has arrived and Edward and Sophie, plus Andrew are en route.

I recommend Borgen. Brilliant drama.

Anubis68 · 08/09/2022 13:41

Just seen on the news and news reader is wearing black clothing, she must be unwell if all family are going to see her.

Hairgician · 08/09/2022 13:42

Saw that pic of her with the new fkwit and thought she looked awful. So frail and no colour in her face. And the bruising. How she managed to get up for that il never know. Sounds like the end is near. Hope she passes peacefully.
