Going to be moving into my car

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

Sorry you are faced with this situation 😟

Does the council tenancy agreement for the bedsit you'd be offered specify that you cannot keep dogs at the property?

A bedsit would be a better option than your car until you find something more suitable.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 15:00

@Clarice99 they all say no pets on the bidding adverts ☹️
Living in my car is a better choice than losing the dogs.

Could your dogs stay with a friend or family member? You should take the bedsit, see what the setup is like and you might be able to sneak the dogs in.

No they can't. I've not been offered

No they can't. One is reactive and has separation anxiety she won't cope without me. And even if she did I haven't got anyone to leave them with.
I have not been offered a bedsit but that's all that I can bid on on the local authority housing page. So there's no guarantee I'd get one anyway.

Have you talked to Macmillan? They have people who offer financial advice and all sorts of other assistance to people living with cancer. They might even be able to help you find another form of accommodation.

I believe there are also charities who will offer a temporary home to your dogs while you get yourself sorted with somewhere more suitable to live.

JustTheOneSwan · 03/09/2022 15:13

Would a dog foster work?
Even a bedsit could be ok if it's ground floor and has it's own entrance.
I know your MH will take a hit from not being with the dogs but car will be unlivable in a few weeks with Autumn here.

Clarice99 · 03/09/2022 15:13

Have you approached any of the cancer charities for assistance?

Summerslam · 03/09/2022 15:13

Take the bedsit. Ask friends and family to take your dogs temporarily. Contact Macmillan support for advice. Living in your car - unless it's a campervan, it going to be uncomfortable for you and the dogs. Where will you go for bathroom facilities? There has to be another option.

SpideyMam · 03/09/2022 15:16

Thing thing is fosters are full right now as so many people are giving up their pets due to the cost of living increases.

My friend is in a HA property and recently got a letter stating her dog is vital to keeping her mentally stable and she is allowed to keep him. Can you do something similar?

I'm sure some legislation came in place that says people are allowed dogs now unless they have a good reason otherwise.

mountainsunsets · 03/09/2022 15:23

Why won't you take the bedsit?

BuenoSucia · 03/09/2022 15:25

Are you tied to the area you’re in right now?

There isn't another option.

The dogs can't go to friends or family. She is reactive and they can't meet her needs. Nor would she cope in kennels. It's just not going to happen.

If I have to stay in the car then thats what I will do. I have a gym membership so I can at least shower and stuff. It will be cold though!

Yes.
I'm undergoing treatment for cancer - a clinical trial so need to remain at the same hospital.
I also have a business which is locally based.

Are you Cornwall? I seem to remember you are.

You need to be bidding. No pets policies rarely are enforced anyway.

Bemyclementine · 03/09/2022 15:29

Bid for a bedsit, don't mention the dogs. I am a LA housing officer and really wish people were less honest about having a dog, when they are almost homeless and want to turn down a property tgat doesn't allow pets. I've never seen a social housing tenant evicted fir having a pet.

Exactly.

PacificFish · 03/09/2022 15:32

I’m sure that the lovely gang at StreetVet might help you.

Clarice99 · 03/09/2022 15:32

I also work in LA housing and I've never seen a tenant evicted for having a pet either, so that's 2 of us on this thread.

Your dogs are your emotional support, more than ever now that you have cancer, so get bidding and keep quiet about the dogs.

wellhelloitsme · 03/09/2022 15:33

Please, please speak to MacMillan and see if they can offer help. And also Shelter. And your local churches (they will often kindly help people whether they are religious or atheist - I'm the latter).

So sorry you're going through this Flowers

wellhelloitsme · 03/09/2022 15:35

Also your local WI (as in women's institute) as they can also sometimes offer help with finding resources / services locally to help.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 15:35

I've just bid on the two in my area. I'm position 110 on one and 93 on the other ☹️

Could you rent a static caravan on a longer term basis?
