Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

Shame, shame, shame on the Conservatives today. So self congratulatory. If they got anywhere near the ordinary public they’d be massively booed.
People across the UK are absolutely worried sick through no fault of their own, about how to live, eat, keep warm, due to Tory Party mismanagement. We’re about to have a recession worse than the 1990s (as Ken Clarke just said on the Today Programme.)

The whole Tory party response to the vanity-protracted Johnson ‘resignation’ (as we said on here it wasn’t an actual resignation- just an abdication of duty for a couple of months leaving the country rudderless) then the posturing self-indulgent leadership election to create new PM has been disgusting, putting Conservative Party before country every step of the way. We have seen exactly the desperately lowcalibre of PM we will be getting.

Liz Truss’ acceptance speech yesterday gives us more of the same- speaking as if her appointment had come through some natural succession of PMs, not because of her predecessor’s shameful resignation. And today Johnson’s farewell speech describing his passing the PMship on as like being in a ‘relay race’ - as if!

www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-62802807
Angela Rayner nailed it:

Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner has described what we just saw as a "classic" Boris Johnson speech, but not in a good way.

Speaking on Sky News, she says Johnson is "completely deluded" about his record in government and the "crisis people are facing" over energy bills and inflation.

Rayner adds his speech "stunk of all the hallmarks of someone who's had a privileged background, who thinks they can just do what they like."

’I just felt there was no acknowledgement of the scandal and sleaze that has engulfed his government over the last couple of years."

Mary Beard

If you are curious about Boris Johnson's reference to Cincinnatus in his goodbye speech - he was a 5th century BC Roman politician who saved the state from an invasion, then - job done - returned to his farm ('to his plough'). He was also an enemy of the people.

"EXCLUSIVE FULL DETAILS OF TRUSS’S ENERGY PLAN *

— she will set a fixed unit price for energy suppliers to sell gas & electricity to households

— along with green levy cut this will freeze average bills at current level

— costs ~£130bn over 18 months"

No details on how they going to pay for it.

I have seen comments saying that it effectively will be a loan paid back by customers rather than by government borrowing

DowningStreetParty · 06/09/2022 09:43

There’s a video of them leaving Downing Street, posted by the PM official Twitter account. With a gross title: ‘thank you Boris’- which is currently being ratioed quite reasonably along the lines of ‘errrrr thanks for nothing’…

I disagree about the dress- Carrie looks like she is wearing a light transparent dress over a dark string bikini. Or that she’s wearing a generously- sized merkin. Neither of which, a great choice to go to meet the Queen. Carrie is tagging along for the photos with Boris going to Balmoral to finally leave the job.

With a relationship like theirs (or with a gross relationship history like his is, to be precise) the media would be assuming trouble in Paradise unless they are pictured everywhere together, which must be a massive pain in the arse for Carrie.

I'm not one to comment on clothing normally but, Christ on a bike, why would you choose a semi sheer / appliquéd effect outfit that emphasises the bust & crotch areas for a 'formal' TV event ? It cannot be subconscious surely? Or is CJ 'making a comment' on the level of respect she feels this charade deserves? Very odd either way.

SueSaid · 06/09/2022 10:05

'That's an odd correlation. What do crime statistics several years ago have to do with his personal sleaziness?'

Nothing. I'm saying a 20% reduction is crime is rather more relevant then a posters vague opnion that 'he is sleazy!'

DowningStreetParty · 06/09/2022 10:11

Grin

As she is a former Head of Communications for the Conservative Party, I can’t imagine that she leaves anything about her public profile to chance.

"I have seen comments saying that it effectively will be a loan paid back by customers rather than by government borrowing"

Yes that is my understanding too Duncin. The full policy will be announced Thursday AM apparently but no doubt The Times/Telegraph/Mail will already have been briefed so I'm going to try & dig around.

Listened to The News Agents Monday episode this morning. Interesting take on both Truss & Johnson from George Osborne (which I didn't entirely agree with).

"vague opnion that 'he is sleazy!'"

It's only a vague opinion if you ignore Johnson's career (making up quotes, being sacked twice, Guppy, misrepresenting EU legislation- a ban on bendy bananas - prorogued Parliament, misled the Queen, Paterson, Acuri, Pincher etc).

But when a huge chunk of said crime was just shifted to a different set of statistics in the latter period it isn't an actual achievement is it.

"But they changed the rules". 😂😂😂

mibbelucieachwell · 06/09/2022 11:22

When Johnson and his current wife were saying their goodbyes it looked like Carrie was being hauled round after Boris Johnson. At one point it looked like Boris yanked her in the direction he was going, out of a hug she was having.

I'm not a royalist, but they could have done with copying the royal couples by just walking closely together which would have enabled them to do the handshakes/kissing etc without the apparent tug of war.

Nadine Dorries has written a book?Shock.

If my understanding of the cost energy bills action is correct the government is assuming that eventually energy bills will become less expensive and in the meantime the government will lend the energy suppliers the difference between the current cost and the wholesale global costs + their profits to enable them to sell us our energy at current prices.

Households will pay the loan back over the next 20 odd years through electricity bills. Like a mortgage?

As usual, everything is dumped on the shoulders of younger people. The Conservative party does whatever it takes to protect their elderly voters, the housing market and global corporations.

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 11:32

Dorries has written about a dozen books - all romantic fiction.

Truss’s repayment plans - if that’s what they are - will affect everyone who pays utility bills @mibbelucieachwell. As a pensioner with longevity genes I fully expect to be paying utility bills for the next 20 years. I’m getting a little tired of this anti pensioner, ageist crap and am very sorry to see it’s infiltrated these threads.

the80sweregreat · 06/09/2022 11:38

Will it be ok if your in credit on your energy account? I can change my direct debits on my account etc , but I am in credit
How will this work ?

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/09/2022 12:16

Why the fuck did they take 2 planes? They are chucking taxpayers money around like confetti while the taxpayers are worrying about eating. I think a vast number have given up on heating.

The next government minister who talks about climate change and carbon footprint and how awful I am for breathing can fuck right off.

It already appears to be more of the same. They've learnt nothing. This says they are too stupid to be in charge of boiling a (£30) kettle let alone a country!

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 12:20

Two planes? More to the point, why haven’t they used commercial flights? The optics of that are shocking, who’s advising them?

the80sweregreat · 06/09/2022 12:25

I agree drummer.
Why two jets ( security I suppose, they will say ) but it's still a bad message to send.
Why couldn't Prince Charles come down to Buckingham Palace to do this ? After all , we , the taxpayers , have kept him for years to do this job.
All this protocol stuff is ridiculous.
Throwing money around indeed.

DowningStreetParty · 06/09/2022 12:32

This seems like an extraordinarily unfair idea. I don’t understand the economics of the loan model.. why (without investing heavily in new green energy sources which Truss shows zero inclination for) do we possibly think the supply of energy will increase to the point that costs will fall? What possible incentive is there for making any extra, cheaper electricity when companies are being allowed to sell their current supply at such enormous profits to the highest bidder that the inflated extra will be being paid back by us all decades into the future? Agree with blossomtoes that this is not OK for either older OR younger people.

Does Truss think we should be relying on burning more fossil fuels to make electricity as a way out of this? Because doing that is going to fuck us over environmentally, far far more dangerously than she, Boris and his friends have already managed so far, which is already past intolerable.

the80sweregreat · 06/09/2022 12:33

I'd love it if Her Majesty looks at Liz Truss after being introduced as the county's new PM and sighs
' not another one '

Totally agree. It's ludicrous that the Queen has to do this. Charles should have.

Maybe this will be the last time the Queen has to do this new PM thing... and it's Liz Truss Hmm
After some very distinguished PM's, her last one is Truss. Ironic.

DowningStreetParty · 06/09/2022 12:38

As for the Johnson party and then Truss and whatever entourage she has, being allowed to go up to see the Queen in Scotland in consecutive meetings by taking two separate private jets from London and the. back… outrageously wasteful.

Obviously nothing that any of those people say on climate change should be taken seriously because it’s quite clear that the climate emergency means nothing to either of them. Idiots. Agree that Charles should have come to London.

Well maybe if younger people got off their arses and voted, they might find the politicians start to court them too.

Many of the "elderly" and people who are sick and disabled will really suffer this winter. Some will die. Eff off with your vile ageism. You are blaming the wrong people. Blame the Tories and those who voted them in (hint: people don't turn Tory the minute they hit whatever age you think "elderly" is).

ClaudineClare · 06/09/2022 13:08

Oh, that was rather a robust reply, but really. The biggest change in the last election was among 35-54 year olds, who saw a three point rise in the Conservatives’ vote share and 11 point fall for Labour. Or is 35 elderly now?

That's an odd correlation. What do crime statistics several years ago have to do with his personal sleaziness? Look at his reaction to Pincher 's activities for a start.

I think the point that @JaniieJones is trying to make is that when Boris was Mayor there weren't 100s of crimes being committed in his office.
