Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

You really do have to wonder whether the entire Tory party is under the influence of Putin/Russia.

They are hell bent on wrecking our economy, even more than it is already.

Even Mel Stride is complaining about a lack of an OBR forecast & pointing out the damage to sterling and bonds..

The corp tax rate of 19% failed to get additional investment into the UK, he should look at why companies choose a country and it isn't CT rates which can change on a whim.

@L1ttledrummergirl Can you be a bit clearer on what you think of Kwarteng?

Yet again, the Tories get rid of one awful PM and replace with an even worse one.

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2022 10:20

Paul Johnson

£45 billion of tax cuts. This is biggest tax cutting event since 1972. Barber's "dash for growth" then ended in disaster. That Budget is now known as the worst of modern times. Genuinely, I hope this one works very much better.

Lonelycrab · 23/09/2022 10:23

Thats what it looks like to me.

FWIW I think they know full well they don’t stand a hope in hell of winning the next election, too many chickens coming home to roost and are going into full on, don’t give a fuck mode. Take what we can, while we can and waltz off leaving the mess for someone else. Screw the country.

Utter wankers.

DowningStreetParty · 23/09/2022 10:24

God I wish Rachel Reeve was our PM.

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2022 10:28

You can't buy a house for under 250,000 where I live and it's nowhere posh.
To get the stamp duty benefit people will have to move further out ( if they want to buy a house )
It's all just smoke and mirrors again on that front although i am in the south East where we haven't had any really low house prices in years.
It may benefit others though

If a Labour MP had carried on like the chancellor did on Monday at the funeral they would have been flamed and shamed by the press. I remember Michael Foots jacket at the cenotaph.
A celeb couple jumped a queue and received far more coverage than his antics.

God I wish Rachel Reeve was our PM.

Me too. She’s amazing. There are a lot of very impressive women on the Labour front bench.

So hard as to be impossible I suspect.

Should be fairly easy If you look up areas suitable for fracking, exploratory licences have been issued for a large part of Rees-Mogg's constituency. I've no doubt he'll lead from the front

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2022 10:41

How do the people in North Somerset feel about fracking ? Has anyone asked them?

mibbelucieachwell · 23/09/2022 10:50

A tax cut for the wealthiest while everyone else worries sick about how they'll make ends meet. Wow.

It'll be interesting to see what the Scottish government decides to do with the Scottish tax rates which are devolved. I predict they'll match the drop at the lowest rate and get it back by freezing the higher rate threshold.

Would this make Scotland less appealing to employees from rUK or be cancelled out by better services? I don't know how Scottish public services compare with rUK. We have poorer health here in Scotland which will impact the NHS obviously. But we also have universally free prescriptions.

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2022 10:51

The pound is falling. Fast.

Well. 2 year UK Govt borrowing just hit 3.99% from 3.5 this morning, 3.1 on Tuesday… first time since September 2008 pre Lehmans levels

But Corbyn...

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2022 11:35

'Kamikwasi Economics'.

L1ttledrummergirl · 23/09/2022 11:38

@L1ttledrummergirl Can you be a bit clearer on what you think of Kwarteng?

@Alexandra2001 I thought I was being quite restrained. Was half expecting a deletion.
@Lonelycrab that did help frame my opinion.

But Corbyn indeed...

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2022 11:35

'Kamikwasi Economics'.

Spot on!
If it wasn't all so grim I may have added a laughing emoji too.

DuncinToffee · 23/09/2022 11:50

The 600,000 highest earning people in the country will save an average of £10,000 a year in tax, thanks to Kwarteng scrapping the top rate of tax, the Treasury says.

I saw it being compared to burning £50 notes in front of a foodbank Angry

tobee · 23/09/2022 12:00

Ok someone mentioned upthread letters to 1922 committee. Anyone going to stick their neck out for date of next general election? 😬

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2022 12:05

Will Mr Sunak and the ones who are not keen on these UKIP lite policies start the revolution first ?

tobee · 23/09/2022 12:15

Hmm I was thinking about Sunak the other day. I know he didn't get trounced but will he stay on? I know he got good support from MPs but will the result of the membership vote now mean he is tainted? The Truss will be the next prime minister was already a done deal when Mogg got behind her so fast along with large swathes of the right wing press and everyone else wanting to get a job.

Not sure what motivates Sunak to be a politician? Usually with Tories it's as simple as keep/make money for me and desire for power.

Notonthestairs · 23/09/2022 12:25

No wonder they didn't want a full OBR assessment.

I can't work out how the sums add up. For once I don't think that is down to my own inadequacies. We are borrowing more at a point when money is more expensive.

The Labour Party would have been pulled apart by the media if they'd introduced this budget.

Pretty soon I’d say, before it all spectacularly goes to shit. Definitely before 2024.

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2022 12:27

Labour would have been pulled apart on all of it.
The Daily Mail are all for it ( the comments pages not so much )

Notonthestairs · 23/09/2022 12:27

"Not sure what motivates Sunak to be a politician? "

It's an interesting question. I can't pretend to know but his movements over the next 12 months will be quite revealing.

GE this side of Christmas? This was a budget not a "fiscal event".

I hope not. I honestly don't think I have the stomach to listen to them prattle on again this year.

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 23/09/2022 12:35

Farcical event more like.

Corbyn with a borrowing requirement of around 54 billion was hauled over the coals by the Tory press as being Marxist irresponsible blah blah blah but Kwunty Kwarteng with expected borrowing of 200billion and no certainty he will even get it at affordable rates, is applauded by the likes of the Mail.
