What’s classed as “chavvy” if you’re poor…

But classy if you’re rich? I’ll start…

cocaine
floor beds for children
Speaking a second language
Day drinking
babysitters

Babysitters?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 02/09/2022 11:21

Tutors.
Living in the city.

loudbatperson · 02/09/2022 11:23

I hate the term chavvy and how it is used to demonise people, but I understand what you are getting at by the post.

I don't think most people would consider babysitters or speaking a second language "chavvy" though.....

ProseccoStorm · 02/09/2022 11:25

What nonsense.

Growing up on an estate
More than 3 children

motherstongue · 02/09/2022 11:28

Seriously bad taste this thead

Ineedtoletgo83 · 02/09/2022 11:29

It’s not chavvy but what saddens me is I grew up in a very poor area. And it’s the lack of ambition. For example some children I went to school with when younger would aspire to be Doctors, Teachers but so many of my friends just did what their mum’s did. Had kids when they could, some by multiple fathers and never broke the cycle of poverty/lack of education etc

I don't think you have quite got the OPs point.

This definitely! Or even having a sahp

dudsville · 02/09/2022 11:31

Chavvy is define in Websters as "/ˈtʃævi/ (British English, offensive, informal) (of a person) behaving, dressing or speaking in a way that you think shows a low social class and lack of education." So it's defined as offensive, and you're also asking the "poor" to comment. What's the intention of this thread?

Aposterhasnoname · 02/09/2022 11:33

Loads of people on here just not getting the point of this thread.

MinnieMouseclubhouse · 02/09/2022 11:33

Surely the point is to ridicule the class system and show how hypocritical it is?

Justanotherwinter · 02/09/2022 11:34

I’m working class. I grew up in poverty. On a council estate. If you don’t get the post, don’t join in. It’s harmless

I don’t think she’s asking “the poor” to comment, she’s making the point of the double standard.

For example, if you’re middle class and your children are in second hand scruffy clothes it’s because you’re eco friendly. But if you’re poor and your children are in scruffy clothes it’s chavvy.

MbatataOwl · 02/09/2022 11:37

Fun in the sun holidays

SalviaOfficinalis · 02/09/2022 11:38

I’ll add - owning lots of dogs (more than 3).

goldenbag · 02/09/2022 11:38

Working class children are "naughty", middle class children are "spirited".

PetronellaOsgood · 02/09/2022 11:38

‘Feral’ unwashed children running around barefoot outside. Fine if you’re middle class or above, social services needed for anyone else.

GlitchStitch · 02/09/2022 11:40

Smoking

PuttingDownRoots · 02/09/2022 11:41

I was at an event once where a toddler accidentally picked up and drank half a glass of Gin and Tonic.

Middle class: it was just seen as a funny mishap. Apparently he slept well.
Council estate: feckless parents drinking, not supervising children allowing toddler to get drunk.

Is that the sort of thing you mean?

MoniJitchell · 02/09/2022 11:43

Dirty, scruffy children
Designer labels
Big dogs
Drinks at lunchtime/daily drinking
Smoking weed
Holidays during term time

PetalParty · 02/09/2022 11:44

Sports label clothes
If you have money, it’s a casual Sunday, or it’s a gym outfit
If you have no money, you’re on ASBO and hooligan territory

LidlCinnamonBun · 02/09/2022 11:44

I think the OP means what’s frowned upon if you are poor but not if you are rich
eg charity shop clothes, kids playing outside, messy hair in a bun is interpreted differently if you are working class or upper class.
