What’s classed as “chavvy” if you’re poor…

Justanotherwinter · 02/09/2022 11:04

But classy if you’re rich? I’ll start…

cocaine
floor beds for children
Speaking a second language
Day drinking
babysitters

This is an indicator of a high level of ignorance.
The more languages the better, not only academically but for a better understanding of the world.

Yes, that's the point- the thread is about double standards.

AryaStarkWolf · 02/09/2022 12:26

Why is speaking a different language classed as Chavvy if you're poor?

Also just because some rich people do cocaine I don't it's viewed as "classy" when they do it 😂

SunnyD44 · 02/09/2022 12:26

Hot tubs

Yes! Good one.

And bars in the garden.

Great thread OP!

What a rotten thread

Wow

I think you might have misunderstood the thread.

moneynotsofunny · 02/09/2022 12:27

Someone please explain the babysitter one….??

OnlyYellowRoses · 02/09/2022 12:27

Absentee parents
Chavvy - no dad around, or dumping the kids with any old person so you can get to go out and party with your mates, not going to school functions, not spending any time involved with them - ring ring social services calling.

Posh - welcome to your new boarding school, see you at end of term. Or here is your nanny, she'll be the one you grow up closer too!

Anon50000 · 02/09/2022 12:28

Definitely letting your teenagers go to parties with alcohol and drugs.

Anglophilia

Good one.
Union Jack hanging outside a window on a council estate = vulgar
Union Jack on top of your castle = classy.

Football hooliganism is called chavvy and "Broken Britain." The Bullingdon club smashing up a pub is jolly japes.

I'll also add:
Children out of wedlock
Shagging around

AbsolutelyLoveIy · 02/09/2022 12:29

Multiple dads -
middle class = boho
lower class = demonised and feckless

raising kids on dominos and Mac Donald’s
middle class - benign neglect
wc - trashy food

rotten teeth
middle class - too posh to wash
working class - scum bags

etc
etc
etc

OldFan · 02/09/2022 12:29

Blokes wandering round topless in April.
Someone walking along with a drink in their hand.
Big hoop earrings.
Being a criminal.

All sorts of things (I'm poor BTW.)

Chocolatefreak · 02/09/2022 12:29

Visibly branded designer clothes
The name Tania/Tanya
Highlights and light plastic surgery

Nothing, unless you're a snob.

I get it now .

That's the point. There ARE snobs.

Reported for what?

Biros
Duvets
Rabbit Hutches
Mid brown coloured hair
Plug sockets

How on earth is anything on the above list applicable to the question in the OP?

Biro?
Duvets?
Plug sockets?

Really?

Lunar270 · 02/09/2022 12:33

Fairylightsongs · 02/09/2022 12:12

Well yes it is. As the thread clearly asks what’s classy if rich but chavvy as poor and no day drinking and drugs is not lauded if you’re rich. Get a grip

Perhaps not lauded but definitely viewed differently.

People drinking pints for breakfast at Wetherspoons are most definitely viewed differently to those who drink champagne.

Last time I was on holiday in Italy (Lake Garda), a champagne breakfast was quite normal on our resort. We were the poor relations so it was an eye opener but the well heeled were quite enjoying it.

I don't think working class blokes dowing a few pints have the same image!

JudgeJ · 02/09/2022 12:33

VaggieMight · 02/09/2022 12:17

Drinking alcohol in the park

Depends on the alcohol!

Diamond White 2 litre bottle (or whatevetrthe current drink of choice is) is 'chavvy'.

A chilled bottle of Dom Perignon from crystal flutes isn't!

Anon50000 · 02/09/2022 12:33

I think plug sockets are classless 😂

AbsolutelyLoveIy · 02/09/2022 12:34

The point of this thread is the HYPOCRISY of the class system.

it’s not vilifying the poor, it’s pointing out the double standards

Massive lack of comprehension going on around here.

Ihatemyroad · 02/09/2022 12:34

Everything! Literally everything!

Second hand clothes
Daytime drinking
Smoking
3 or more children
Driving an old banger of a car
Scruffy children are bohemian/free if you’re wealthy but neglected if you’re poor.
Tatty/messy house is ok if you’re wealthy because it simply means you’re so busy you don’t have time to tidy, whereas if you’re poor then it means neglect.
Forgotten packed lunch/PE kit at the school gate is amusing when you’re wealthy, (especially if it’s because your hungover) neglect if you’re poor.

.

I think she was being facetious - or possibly, in the spirit of this thread, just a cheeky fucker.

LaundryBin · 02/09/2022 12:26

Yes, that's the point- the thread is about double standards.

I find it terribly shocking. Not only in the UK, it also happens in Spain with foreginers. Its all down to money the way its seen having two languages- by Spanish people- pure ignorance.
