But classy if you’re rich? I’ll start…

cocaine
floor beds for children
Speaking a second language
Day drinking
babysitters

Growing up on an estate

Depends which Chatsworth you mean!

Fairylightsongs · 02/09/2022 12:08

How is speaking a second language or having baby sitters chavvy if you’re poor? How is cocaine and day drinking classy if you’re Rich`?

chavvy is chavvy irrelevant of financial background.

Some of the things being written are bonkers. It’s never ok to neglect your kids , lots of kids by different fathers is viewed the same irrelevant of financial bracket;

People are pointing out the hypocrisy not supporting these views!

Really !

Giving your children ‘out there ‘ names.

Yes! Tamara = either council estate or billionaire's daughter.

What a rotten thread

Wow

Why?

It's pointing out the double standards - stuff that's fine or even celebrated when the 'naice' middle classes do it, but is seen as grim when it's a single mum in a council estate flat (for example).

Fairylightsongs · 02/09/2022 12:09

UnnecessaryFennel · 02/09/2022 12:05

Noisy, barefoot children with long unwashed hair
Crappy, ancient, filthy cars
Messy houses
Smoking
Drinking
More than 3 children
More than 2 dogs

I'm not sure that too many of the MC/UC have sofas in their front gardens though...

How is any of this clsssy if you’re rich `?

antelopevalley · 02/09/2022 12:09

Having affairs.

And yet really no one has come up with one example that’s valid.

I love this thread. The posts that get it are shrewd, witty observations and the ones that don't are hilarious.

And if I can add football hooligans versus 'high spirited jinks' as seen pre and post Rugby -

What a rotten thread

Wow

It’s a rotten societal attitude which unfortunately exists in the UK - that’s what the thread is about.

UnnecessaryFennel · 02/09/2022 12:11

No one is saying it's 'classy'. The point is that it's not condemned. It's making the point that society has double standards for behaviour depending on how you are 'seen'.

God MN is hard work sometimes.

I hate the term chavvy and how it is used to demonise people, but I understand what you are getting at by the post.

I don't think most people would consider babysitters or speaking a second language "chavvy" though.....

Babysitters as in your mum/sister/neighbour watching your kids while you go to work or party

speaking a second language as in immigrants??

And yet really no one has come up with one example that’s valid.

Second hand clothes is the perfect example - viewed on some as a sign of poverty, and on others as a fashionable statement of sustainability.

No one is saying either view is right, just that the double standard exists.

PotatoHammock · 02/09/2022 12:12

Kids being generally a bit grubby and unkempt (if you're rich enough, it's just "bohemian", and probably a sign that the kids will grow up to be fiercely independent and capable 🙄)

Well yes it is. As the thread clearly asks what’s classy if rich but chavvy as poor and no day drinking and drugs is not lauded if you’re rich. Get a grip

donquixotedelamancha · 02/09/2022 12:12

Seriously bad taste this thead

So it's defined as offensive, and you're also asking the "poor" to comment. What's the intention of this thread?

How on earth can anyone misunderstand the point of this thread? I can never tell whether people are deliberately feigning offence or just really that stupid.

OP's point is that (for example) sitting on a park bench with a can of Stella and a kebab in a Kapa tracksuit is frowned upon but quaffing gin on a picknic blanket while nibbling cucumber sandwhiches is fine.

The battered Volvo covered in dog hair is often wheeled out as a MC identifier on MN and elsewhere.

As is having a messy “too cool to clean” house.

JudgeJ · 02/09/2022 12:13

FourTeaFallOut · 02/09/2022 12:00

Untidy house.

When we lived alongside Forces families there was a real difference in how things were perceived. The wives of Officers who had come up through the ranks were obsessively tidy, never a thing out of place if they invited us to call for coffee after the school bus or even if you had reason to drop in unexpectedly. The posher wives of the regular Officers couldn't care less, often came to the bus stop in a dressing gown, kitchen and sitting room looked like a bomb-site.

Depends on the language.
