Messy and dirty kids from playing outside
Poor kids- scruffy
Middle-class kids- Forest school style playing, nature, outdoorsy

Chewbecca · 02/09/2022 12:35

I think it is a curious thread, maybe clumsily worded but makes a good point that so e behaviours considered feckless if you are low class is typically accepted as an UC behaviour.

weekfour · 02/09/2022 12:36

Leaving your kids in a hotel room while you go for a meal.

Suetwo · 02/09/2022 12:36

I have no problem with the word chav. People who behave badly OUGHT to be shamed. They ruin other people’s lives. That silly little twerp Owen Jones wrote a book titled ‘Chav: Demonisation of the Working Class’. Ugghh, so smug. As if people can’t distinguish between a chav and ordinary working class people! Only an utter cretin would judge someone by how much money they’ve got. When I describe someone as a chav, I mean that they are:

Rude
Ignorant
Confrontational (usually over nothing)
Incapable of holding a civilised conversation
Incapable of settling disputes in a calm, sensible way
Incapable of keeping their voice down
Don’t instil morals or manners in their children
Exploit the benefit system
Allow their vicious, ignorant kids to ruin the neighbourhood
Drive around in idiotic cars with screeching engines and loud exhausts
Ignorant and boring
Laugh at rape jokes
Cruel to animals
Walk past you with their hoods up stinking of weed
Should be discouraged from having kids

Above all, they are people who simply don’t know how to behave.

You can be a rich chav. And you can live on the streets yet be the most intelligent, charming, well-mannered person in Britain.

Depends on the alcohol!

Diamond White 2 litre bottle (or whatevetrthe current drink of choice is) is 'chavvy'.

A chilled bottle of Dom Perignon from crystal flutes isn't!

Unless you’re drinking it ironically - in which case, such fun!

SirChenjins · 02/09/2022 12:37

The Diamond White that is

Brilliant thread. Funny and thought provoking. Thank you op.

Chocolatefreak · 02/09/2022 12:38

Swearing - not actually classy but completely justified and acceptable if you're MC

Noentrymeansnoentry · 02/09/2022 12:39

Double-barrelled surnames.

This

I always always thought it was your richer person who done that
Not anymore though One of my DM's DFs children got married and double barrelled . They are not Chav's though but DO come from Chatham ironically .
😄

Speaking a second language?

I get the point of the thread and agree re: double standards. Interesting topic. But I don't get the second language thing?? Is that really seen as chavy if you're poor?

UnnecessaryFennel · 02/09/2022 12:05

Noisy, barefoot children with long unwashed hair
Crappy, ancient, filthy cars
Messy houses
Smoking
Drinking
More than 3 children
More than 2 dogs

I'm not sure that too many of the MC/UC have sofas in their front gardens though...

We've got a Victorian box pew. Does that count?

Trinity65 · 02/09/2022 12:42

I am poor(ish) but if I knew somebody who spoke a second language It would just impress Me . I am useless at languages .
A cousin, though, can speak 4 . She went to Uni (nobody else did) and I am pretty proud of Her , though never see her unless at a funeral .

I took the implication as being immigrants

InMySpareTime · 02/09/2022 12:43

Children spending most of their time in nanny's care rather than with parents.

adriftabroad · 02/09/2022 12:44

It has to be the right sort of second language, as a PP explained.

BinBandit · 02/09/2022 12:44

the 2nd language - it depends on the languages as already said by a PP.

Polish/romanian/urdu etc etc as a first language and english as a 2nd will be viewed differently from being bilingual in another european language or learning chinese etc.

Posh/rich/titled people can behave this way and can do all these things on your list. They won't get called chavs though.
