Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

1000 replies

chattp · 30/08/2022 11:17

Not that I've had many!

But Christian Bale was in London 'itsu' a few months back.

He was buying something but I'd just picked it out of the chilled section. I saw he went to reach out for it at the same time so offered it to him, as I liked something else anyway

His response? 'You've touched it. Why would I want it now?'

I was really shocked at how rude he was!

Sorry that was in response to a PP saying he was 'known' for being a twat. He's definitely not known for this !

ScribblingPixie · 01/09/2022 09:18

Daniel Day-Lewis full-on shoulder barged me in the street in Notting Hill, not looking where he was going. It hurt! No apology. He was a bit grubby-looking and not quite his official height IMO.

Laughing at the posts saying celebs should be able to go about their normal lives completely unbothered by fans. Seriously, you can’t be that naive? Remind yourselves that they’ve got the money to basically vanish and live a nice quiet life somewhere if they choose to, but they don’t. Underneath it all they’ve got huge egos and would be gutted (not to mention skint) if their fans ignored them overnight.

Not everyone who is famous actually chases fame, for many it’s just a side-effect of pursuing a talent.

And only a few a-listers and premiership footballers have the wealth to “vanish”. Tonnes of famous people are only earning a moderate wage, or at least certainly don’t have the wealth to have staff doing everything for them. They still need to do ordinary stuff like go to the dentist and grab something from the shop.

And even if you wanted fame it doesn’t mean you have to enjoy every minute of it. I wanted children, doesn’t mean I’m radiant smiles and my undivided attention every time one of the shouts “mummy!”

NGKfiver · 01/09/2022 09:40

Totally agree @CroccyWoccy

and also…. Even if they could, imagine having to ‘vanish’ and never being able to attend friends or family celebrations like parties or weddings, all because you happen to make music that people love to listen to or won a gold medal for your country.

some attitudes on this thread are so strange!

Giggorata · 01/09/2022 09:55

I have met many actors and authors at science fiction conventions, and it has generally been brilliant.
Once I met all the cast members from a TV series I liked at a small convention and we all hung out and had dinner and drinks and a good time.
However, one of them took a shine to me and clearly expected that I would be his shag for the duration. He was extremely persistent and creepy throughout the week. We all knew he had a long term partner, too.
The role he plays (very well) is that of a slimy sex obsessed loser. Just saying…

lollipoprainbow · 01/09/2022 10:10

@Giggorata Brian ??

lollipoprainbow · 01/09/2022 10:12

@MsTSwift those 'pratt's' got them where they are today why so rude ??

But for that talent to make money, they have to have fans 🤷🏼‍♀️ One cannot exist without the other. Ronaldo should’ve stuck to playing for his town FC if he doesn’t want screaming fans yet is so passionate about football.

lollipoprainbow · 31/08/2022 08:58

@Lakeyloo I was there too! My dd was so upset, I was pleased as can't stand her and it meant we could get an earlier ferry home !

@lollipoprainbow Must admit I wasn't too upset either (we got Richard Ashcroft and extended Biffy 👌) but we felt so sorry for the families who had specifically come to see her. Totally unprofessional and no regard for the fans who have put her where she is !

The amazing:
Bill Clinton.
The charisma is eerie. I. Would. Have. Done. Anything. For. That. Man.

You were obviously not alone in feeling that!! One of many. 😉

I have also read numerous reports that Clinton was incredibly charismatic and phenomenally attractive in person.

This has always amazed me, as to my jaundiced eye he looks as though his face was carved out of a potato. Just goes to show that personality really is what matters.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 01/09/2022 10:26

A friend of mine met Bill Clinton when he was on the campaign trail and said his charisma was like nothing else she'd ever experienced.

Not my story, but re Judy Dench, she was apparently crossing a road in the west end. A cab driver shouted out of his window at her to, "Hurry up, you cunt." She shouts back, "That's Dame Cunt to you."
🤣

That's wonderful! 😂😂😂

I had been reading the previous post about her and thinking "I'm glad she's so lovely but I bet she swears like a docker!" (I don't know why I have always though this)

I'm glad to know that my "spidey-senses" are spot on! 😄

There's a happy medium. Barging up to a celebrity mid meal and demanding selfies and autographs is rude and ignorant.
Quietly asking for one when they are leaving is a different matter.

Have you never read about her embroidery on set?!? Extract describing it here:

Reporter Karl Rozemeyer for Premier Magazine said that his most arresting memory he took away being on set with living legend Judi Dench is not her boundless fascination with acting but her penchant for subversive needlework. Her work certainly did not resemble the delicately stitched roses of a Mrs. Bennet.

"She makes these like needlework embroideries on set in the tedium of filming", says MacFadyen, "but they are all: 'You Are a Cunt'. And she gives them as presents. And it's Dame Judi Dench. And she is doing this beautifully, intricate, ornate (work). You kind of see the work materializing as the shoot goes on. Like: 'You Are a Fucking Shit.'

I have just spent far too much time trying to decide who I would like to meet most, if I had to decide between Mads Mikkelsen and Morten Harket.

I do think people need to realise someone refusing a photo/autograph when they are about their own business, isn't rude. It's unreasonable entitlement to expect to interrupt someone's personal time unless they are Mads Mikkelsen or Morten Harket. Someone being stopped by a stranger walking down the street or having a meal should be free to be left the fuck alone (especially if they are with their DC) even if you really like the way they sing or kick a ball. Smiling at them is a nice thing to do.

An example of a famous person refusing an autograph or a photo or not smiling back as a fleeting interaction, isn't bad behaviour. People can't tell their stories of proper bad behaviour as they worry about being sued, have signed NDAs or worry about being outed, or just want to be professional.

PS John Terry is a total cunt, surely the truth is a defence there Wink

I LIKE HER MORE BY THE MINUTE!!!

I hadn't't known abut that, but it makes her even more delightful and down-to earth, doesn't it?

I'd hate to cross her, though . . . 😄

Whoischristianbale · 01/09/2022 10:51

I've met Judi dench at a book signing, she was bit weary but absolutely lovely to my daughter who must have been about 7 at the time.

Charisma is powerful stuff. I knew someone who knew Oskar Schindler slightly, many, many years before. He was getting older and looked nothing special, what he had done was not "known" as it is now, but apparently he could walk unobtrusively into a room and just stand there and within minutes have a crowd (often of young women) hanging off his every word. I was told "it was like the air changed around him".

Underneath it all they’ve got huge egos and would be gutted (not to mention skint) if their fans ignored them overnight.

That really, really isn't true. Yes huge celebs like Tom Cruise are very wealthy, but plenty of celebs are not rich. Actors are rarely wealthy unless they are major Hollywood stars acting in studio movies or on Marvel contracts. Or actors on American TV shows who are on longterm contracts.

I know and have worked with tons of actors who regularly play leads in theatre productions and are regularly on TV, but still work shifts in day jobs on the side because they wouldn't be able to afford to live in London on what theatre and TV pays.

Even household name TV actors or TV presenters not on golden handshake deals earn enough to live nice comfortable lives, but that's very different from being super wealthy. Most British household name actors I know live in normal houses or flats in London, take the tube, shop in Tesco. They can afford to buy a nice-ish house and maybe send their kids to private school, but they certainly couldn't afford the whole Tom Cruise enchilada with bodyguards and gated mansions. I mean, I know household names who never stop complaining about their mortgages. We're not talking rich here.

Music celebs like pop stars don't make money unless they write their own material (meaning they own the rights) or do a LOT of touring - the money in the music industry mainly comes from touring, or from licensing song rights for things like TV commercials. The music industry is extremely exploitative to the point it should be illegal; young popstars often end up broke and bankrupt because they don't realise they have to pay back everything that's spent on them, even music video costs. You can easily have a #1 single and earn nothing if you're not credited as a writer.

As for ego, it really depends so much. Reality show stars skew more egomaniacal. Most actors actually don't have big egos. There are plenty of actors who are very shy and introverted and tolerate fame because they love the craft of acting, very shy people often love acting because it's a chance to lose themselves inside a character.

What part of the entertainment industry to you work in?

lollipoprainbow · 01/09/2022 11:39

How utterly cringeworthy Judi trying to be funny.

Also, everyone - literally EVERYONE - in the public eye has stalkers.

I've never met anyone with even the tiniest bit of profile (like local newsreader level) who didn't have at least one or two scary experiences with obsessive fans.

Anyone with real fame, you can confidently assume they have actual stalkers and have to spend money on security. Which changes how they respond to fans approaching them.

You don't know if the person coming up to you is a nice normal fan who genuinely appreciates your work (or a person who doesn't know or care who you are, just vaguely recognises 'famous person', or someone who is using you to show off on social media, or one of those people who is enraged by celebrity and wants to put you in your place for daring to be famous) OR a stalker who's going to attack you. That makes every interaction fraught and scary.

IncompleteSenten · 01/09/2022 11:49

My husband many years ago worked in elder care in a specialist home where there were several parents of fucking massive celebrities.

I wonder how many people there are like him who saw some foul and callous behaviours but must protect the privacy of the elderly parent.

I've always liked Gordon Brown - never met him, but he has always struck me as quite a shy - and very honest and ethical - man.

My opinion is somewhat coloured by the fact that his administration closed down a brand new hospital's cancer department in a brand new hospital because it was built by the Conservatives and he said nothing, even though he was the local MP. Refused to engage in any public debate on the subject at all.

My mother had cancer at the time, which later killed her, and she was absolutely exhausted by having to travel to the ageing local hospital in Kirkcaldy for regular treatment instead, an hour's bus journey away for her. Which made it into a 2 hour journey each way in total.

I still cannot fathom why a brand new, state of the art hospital would be part mothballed like this in a a place which has trebled in size due to new house building, or why the local MP wouldn't get involved.

Rarely have I felt so powerless in a supposed democracy, and I made sure to move out of the area as soon as I could.
