Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

Not that I've had many!

But Christian Bale was in London 'itsu' a few months back.

He was buying something but I'd just picked it out of the chilled section. I saw he went to reach out for it at the same time so offered it to him, as I liked something else anyway

His response? 'You've touched it. Why would I want it now?'

I was really shocked at how rude he was!

My daughter went to school with ex-England player Michael Owen and his wife. They still live locally and are very down to earth, people tend to just let them be.
They're quite often in the local pub.

Louise Bonsall isn’t it?

I was outside Anfield with maybe two thousand others waiting for the players to come out and when Owen (who was 18) appeared he was bombarded. This was just after the World Cup when he emerged as the biggest young star on the planet. After eventually getting through the crowds he got into his Jaguar and there were handprints all over it so had to use the wipers to clear the windscreen. She was sat quietly waiting in the passengers side and I’m remember thinking how could she deal with this.

In addition to my friends encounter with JT, I sometimes have to drive through Cobham which is near to where he lives. He drives like an utter cunt too. 😂

I'm in the husband queue! Grin (47 years and counting...) @BitOutOfPractice

I was encouraged to read upthread that apparently it is often the "management" who insist on things like this unbeknowns to the actual star. I know BF is extremely shy, but have heard much more positive reports about him, eg bailing out the village shop to the tune of thousands during lockdown.

Clinging on to the hope. Clinging.

id like to tell you that when I jumped on stage to hug him at the London Palladium in 1990-ish he was delightful!

BitOutOfPractice · 31/08/2022 21:24

I’ve also dealt with Kris Akabussi and I agree, he was funny, charming and humble. Loved him.

Austin Healey on the other hand, arrogant wanker. Vile.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 31/08/2022 21:25

Interesting about KA . A family member is connected with him.

Positive John Terry story for balance. Years ago my DS met JT at a children’s football tournament in Surrey (JT was there with his own child who was also taking part) and my DH took a lovely photo of him with my lad which JT was happy to pose for. But maybe my DH looked like someone who wouldn’t give a shit if JT had said no😊

We were on holiday 4 years ago in Los Angeles, it had been our first holiday for years and we splashed out on a rental on the Venice canals. Directly opposite where we were staying was a house that belonged to Maura Tierney (from ER, donkeys ago). A lot of people go to that area and stare in to the houses and gardens and I fully understand how annoying that must be but the night before we left she came and knocked on our door and accused us of taking photos of her and selling them to the papers after she had an accident and was knocked off a bike. I looked the photos up after that and they'd clearly been taken from further up the canal with a telephoto lens. In her defence she was probably off her tits on painkillers but it fair took the shine off what had been a lovely holiday.

Re the supervet I have heard two tales about him, neither particularly flattering. The first one was a bit random, a guy came round to do some repair work in a house we used to rent and apropos of nothing he started talking about the supervet, asking if I'd heard of him and saying he used to be in business with him. This guy implied (or outright said, I can't remember now) he had built the whole vet practice building with his bare hands to the supervet's specification but had basically been done over by him and how he wasn't a very nice guy and all he (supervet) really wanted was to be famous, at any cost. I thought it all smacked of bitterness. Obviously I relayed the story to my family with some relish and this is where the second story emerged. A few years earlier my parents' beloved golden retriever had been having some problems with his back leg and they were referred to the supervet. It turns out the poor old dog had cancer on his leg but rather than the caring persona he shows on the telly, supervet was very rude and cold to them about it and how it could be treated and upset them really badly at an already very upsetting time. I know he's a busy man but it probably wouldn't have hurt to show some compassion to some people desperately upset at having to say goodbye to their lovely dog or spaff thousands of pounds on some work that would prolong his life and possibly his pain.

Apart from that though all the slebs I've met have been delightful but you don't want to hear about that!

He is brilliant in The Big Short, it’s a fantastic and underrated film.

Was Christian Bale in The Big Short? That was a great film. I liked The Prestige, too. Still can't picture his face, though. The only people I can remember from The Big Short are Steve Carrell and Brad Pitt, and I can't forgive Carrell for taking a great movie like Le Dîner de Cons and converting it into a pile of poop.

I once stopped and held the door open for Prince Edward. He walked through and didn’t even glance at me, not a word of thanks. Just glided through. Ignorant twat!! No idea why the queen had 4 kids when she had the heir and spare.

I met him once and he was charming, although obviously he was bought up to be so.
I have it on good authority Gordon Brown and Jeremy Corbyn are both utter tossers.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/08/2022 22:28

On the basis of a very brief encounter involving holding a door open / swanning through it in a bar, Marco Pierre White was rude and entitled, Gordon Ramsay was polite and charming.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/08/2022 22:29

@Pegasushaswings i have met Gordon Brown and he was very nice and very charismatic

I think he’s just so used to lackeys doing that sort of thing he doesn’t even see them. Prince Andrew said the same thing. He just doesn’t register the common people. On official engagements they appear charming and personable is my guess. At home they are lazy and entitled.

lookeelikee · 31/08/2022 22:58

Back in the day I was a dead ringer for a TV/film actor. This was before social media and mobile phones.
I had been away for a year in the USA and had flown home to the UK. As I was collecting my bags I was approached by a number of people trying to get my autograph. It was only when I produced my passport to prove that I wasn't them that these people believed me.
This went on for quite some time throughout the next six months until i changed my hair. (And sometimes that didn't help)
I even got approached on a bus once. The person came and sat right next to me asking questions about a TV series I was supposed to be in.
I can assure you that it is a nightmare being approached all the time for autographs and people shouting at you and generally thinking you're their best mate. And to cap it off I wasn't even famous, nor would I want to be.
I've met hundreds of celebs, royalty, lords and ladies over the years and never treated them anything other than ordinary folk and likewise I can't say that I've ever been treated badly either.
So, I can well believe a celebrity being stand offish or even rude if they have been accosted for the umpteenth time that day.
Cut them some slack and stay away from them.

I wonder if the comedians who are defending him over his cancelled show at the Edinburgh Fringe might change their view of him if they read this, @YesitsBess. I haven’t seen the show, but read the reports, and your story doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I do like your description of him as a cock-juggling thundercunt though - beautifully worded!

Pretty sure there’s a thread somewhere on MN defending him, and this story has tipped me over the edge. Vile man

Gordon Ramsay is indeed very charming and charismatic IRL - think that also comes across on his Road Trip programme with Gino and Fred. Nothing like the aggressive foul mouthed persona on Hell's Kitchen.

Vinnie Jones is also very pleasant, charming and kind - met him during my airport days. Nothing like the thug characters he often plays.

pagopago · 31/08/2022 23:04

Not met him but have heard Simon Cowell is very kind and charming, also generous in that he is a patron of the RSPCA.

Was the Christian bale thing for real? Seemed a bit staged to me, the guy in the cardboard outfit getting shoved over!

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 31/08/2022 23:55

Love this thread.
The bad:
Tracey Cox, z list writer, used to be on TV sometimes talking about sex & body language: Mean Girl vibe for no reason at all, seemed very insecure, did look great for 60 though.

The good:
Simon Callow, Helena Bonham Carter, Janet Ellis (vintage blue peter), Philip Pullman (author) - total sweethearts.

The amazing:
Bill Clinton.
The charisma is eerie. I. Would. Have. Done. Anything. For. That. Man.

Friends have met Prince Charles, Camilla and Catherine, they were blown away with their charm and wit.

Agree with others who have said the more minor s'leb the shittier their behaviour.

Qik · 31/08/2022 23:57

Years ago I was walking next to Green Park and who should I meet out foraging for mushrooms and road-kill, but Her Majesty the Queen, Sir David Attenborough, Dame Joanna Lumley and the Icelandic singer we lovingly know as Bjork.

That's it really. I didn't have an invite back to Palace, so walked on over and bought a £1.49 Happy Meal and went home.

Qik · 01/09/2022 00:00

PM me if you want me to 'spill the beans' about the wedding breakfast.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 01/09/2022 00:12

P.S. Just echoing what others have already said about Gordon Ramsey and Tony Blair (!) - mates met them through work (corporate speaker type events) and said they were surprisingly lovely to everyone, even the 'minions'.

I’ve met/worked with lots of famous people and royalty.
the two worst were women who are now almost praised like saints since they are both dead.

Lady Diana. Awful, stroppy, temperamental, bitchy, cutting and very self centred. I knew her before, during and after her marriage.

Caroline Flack. Nasty piece of work. Shouted, screamed at anyone around her if she didn’t get her way.
She once threw a boot at her boyfriend, gave him a black eye.
I also saw her slap her mum because she told her to stop behaving like that.

There are many other names I could list but there are just as many nice ones too!

Was Princess Diana regularly awful? And was she like that before her marriage. I remember at the time that she regularly cut people out of her life, including her family, and then would suddenly start getting in touch again. So she always seemed like hard work but was she always like that? In what ways, was she temperamental. You've got to tell us more! Please!
