Mikhail Gorbachev has died.

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/08/2022 22:14

May he rest in peace
He must have hated what the Putin regime has done to his country.

Ijsbear · 30/08/2022 22:42

So it's said.

There's an outpouring of hate for him but actually I have the impression he did his best for his country against terrible odds at the time.

minsmum · 30/08/2022 22:46

The trouble is most people in Russia support Putin, that includes people you would not expect. Gorbachev did nothing to stand against Putin he may very well have supported what is happening. I know he was old and that may be a reason but I have to say my view of Russians has changed in just over six months particularly the elite. You can understand the ordinary people who have no political clout or access to the truth but I will not be grieving and I hate that I feel like that

Gorbachev supported the annexation of Crimea after all

minsmum · 30/08/2022 22:54

mobile.twitter.com/sumlenny/status/1564711658429218817 and don't forget this

Ijsbear · 30/08/2022 23:11

I didn't know that :/

MMBaranova · 30/08/2022 23:41

Given his birth in 1931, Gorbachev was the child of a bedded in Soviet Union. The arc of development of the Communist Party led to him.

Of people I know who were adults in 1989/91 the further west they are the more favourably they view him and the further east the more they can point to bad things. He leaves a mixed legacy and clearly played a key role in changing the world we live in.

His mother's family allegedly traces back to Chernihiv in Ukraine (N of Kyiv, NE of Chernobyl) which the Russians put under siege of the first day of the current invasion.

Id dropped off these threads so glad to have found you very wise people again.

Latest estimate : 110,000 civilians died in Mariupol.

Ijsbear · 31/08/2022 09:30

That's just over 1 in 5 isn't it. The figure I saw was that Mariupol had 500,000 people living in it.

Latest estimate : 110,000 civilians died in Mariupol.

That’s more than twice as many civilians as died in the Blitz.

Russia’s war crimes are unthinkable.

Rumours that conscription is starting in St Petersburg and Moscow. Unconfirmed.

But if this is is true - well it won't be popular with the middle class.

OwlsDance · 31/08/2022 10:58

They started recruiting in St Petersburgh a while back. Can't see it being very successful, people living in big cities are generally better educated and better off, why would they want to trade that for being potentially killed?

minsmum · 31/08/2022 11:15

I loved to wooden dummy Himars story. Really funny.

I do too, but I don't really understand why things like this being made common knowledge?

I suppose the Russians still have to react as if they were real HIMARS, just in case they were. A double-bluff. And never knowing whether the threat was real or not will probably make them even more paranoid and neurotic, if possible.

Anyone else think this is a recipe for disaster? Surely a drone factory on Ukrainian soil will be target no. 1 for Russian missiles?
Wouldn't it be better to produce in Turkey and ship in to Ukraine quietly.

Yes, I agree. It will make it a very legitimate target.

It will take at least two years to set up a drone factory and start production, so I think this announcement is simply to annoy the Russians. Well played.

Speaking of drones, there was a video that was taken when the Russians were drone shopping in Iran. It shows a building exploding just before the drone hits the ground a few meters away. So clearly, the Iranians were trying it on with the Russians.

I think it’s the propaganda war.
In order to get other nations to keep on supporting Ukraine as it gets harder and harder going into the winter, everyone has to believe Ukraine can win - their greatest risk is people thinking it’s a waste of time helping them. Stories that make the Russians look like buffoons and the Ukrainians ingenious are great for that. Ukraine is the underdog and the folk tale where the underdog wins through cunning against the more powerful but slow thinking opponent are as old as time.
