The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

Greeny!

That cake would be chocolate Hell to me (as I don't like chocolate) but I paid an amateur cakemaker friend £60 for a similar cake for one of my DC about 12 years ago. It was very well done, but I almost fell over when I received the bill. I paid it without any further ado, obviously, but never had a cake made again 😬

LaughingCat · 19/08/2022 22:35

Oh, and it’s about £75 from me.

LaughingCat · 19/08/2022 22:38

My only note would be to use real cherries rather than glacé to provide a slight note of sourness to set off the chocolate. Maybe with a sour cherry jam between the layers as well.

As an ex cake maker this is very good, well done you! Personally if they are insisting on paying I would either ask for enough to cover your ingredients or tell them what your favourite wine is??
For a nine inch cake with all those layers, professionally done with cake board etc you could charge upwards of £60, so if you decide to start doing this properly don't undersell yourself!

What a lovely comment! I’m no expert but it’s making me hungry and looks lovely.

Its a bit shabby looking
Did a kid make it?
About twenty five quid top whack..cheap confectionery stuck all over it...yuk

What a twattish comment.

There are a number of posters on this thread who deserve a lifetime of jaggy shits.

Bet your family love living with you. They must have dead face muscles from all the eye rolling they do behind your miserable back.

Waspalert · 19/08/2022 23:29

It looks amazing! I have made many a cake in my time and I know the time and expense that must have gone into this cake. The person who suggested that a child might have made it is a obviously a bit ignorant so please ignore them. I would suggest £40 as mate’s rates and I am sure your friend will be very pleased!

oggie679 · 19/08/2022 23:31

Yeah I would, £50? Although I'm sure that's less than it's worth these days!

oggie679 · 19/08/2022 23:34

Read the rest of your posts, I'd do £30-35 but it's worth more if it tastes as good as it looks.

Nanof8 · 20/08/2022 02:48

A cake like that would be £50-75 where I live, possibly more.
You definitely met the brief on it.

llizzie · 20/08/2022 03:02

Whatever it cost, it should be doubled to put it well out of the reach of those who should not be eating so much sugar. The NHS is overloaded as it is, without people getting fat, diabetes, children eating too much sugar, and teenagers full of venom carrying knives and attacking people because they are high on sugar, and other things. Sugar makes drugs and alcohol effects worse. We would be healthier, kinder, more patient, and loving if there was not so much sugar available.

Look how difficult it is to find an NHS dentist? It is sugar and not caring for teeth which is creating the shortage.

Your annual birthday cakes obviously have a fun sponge in, lliizzie.

Sugarmoose · 20/08/2022 05:30

Well done ,for an 9" chocolate decorated cake I would look to pay over £100
Hourly rate , ingredients , electricity and supplies

Ray92 · 20/08/2022 06:12

Blows my mind how people can make cakes this well!!
Go you 👏

cookiecreammmpie · 20/08/2022 07:40

You're clearly talented at making cakes but the top is a bit messy, I think there's too much crammed on. It's not to my personal taste but I'd think someone who was would pay up to about £60 for it.

Dibbydoos · 20/08/2022 08:53

I wish I had a friend like you tgad make me an amazing cake like this for £20!!

I'd expect to pay over £50 tbh. You have a real talent, OP!

Ot’s not a daily breakfast portion for one person @llizzie !

sunglassesonthetable · 20/08/2022 09:28

You need to take a better picture. I bake cakes and a dodgy picture can make them look short. Crouch down low and take a pic

Good point.

It's a real showstopper OP. Well done! Someone is going to be delighted with that. It totally fulfils the brief.

You're good at this.

In truth the pic does the cake a disservice as you don't have any impression of 6 layers. If this pic was to sell, you should be taking it as if you were at table level. And obviously with the cake on a board.

I'd say £60.

LillyOfTheValley2020 · 20/08/2022 09:52

I think your cake looks amazing! Can’t believe you aren’t doing this professionally! As for charging I like the previous comments, just charging for the materials you used if you don’t want to make money.

Insanelysilver · 20/08/2022 11:57

Greensleeves · 18/08/2022 17:10

For those asking for context - I made it, and the person I made it for is insisting that they want to pay for it. I have no idea, so I thought I'd get a straw poll on what it was worth, and then charge them half of that amount (as I am NOT a professional, and it isn't presented on a cake stand etc)

Wow amazingI think it’s brilliant ! You’re very clever ! X
