Would you pay for this cake? And how much would you expect it to cost?

The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

To be honest I'd not want this cake; I've done a birthday cake before by buying a big standard cake from the supermarket, slapping buttercream icing on it and then adding sweets. It took very little talent or time. For me, this cake is overkill. Sorry @Greensleeves if you did it.

PunchyAnts · 18/08/2022 17:04

Looks like a good example of that type of maximalist cake. I'd be very happy with that as a chocolate heaven cake!

Obviously you could get a similar sized cake from the supermarket for somewhere between £15 and £20. But I suspect you bought it from a bakery or independent baker, in which case I wouldn't be surprised if it was £50+.

GoodVibesHere · 18/08/2022 17:04

More context needed sorry

That style isn't my cup of tea, I prefer my cakes just cake, not with chocolate bars and stuff stuck on. But it looks like a good version of that style of cake and fulfils the brief I think! If it's from a small baker then £40-50?

howmanyseas · 18/08/2022 17:06

I like it and think it captures the brief perfectly. Not sure on price but professionally made cakes can be ££ - say £50 upwards. Maybe not the upper end for that one as it doesn't look huge - is it 7ins or thereabouts?

Are you the maker or the client?

Narcheska · 18/08/2022 17:06

It’s very on trend for this type of cakes and I’d say it fits the chocolate heaven

I’d say based on other cakes I’ve got in the past somewhere between £50-£100

Ravenblack1 · 18/08/2022 17:06

It looks amazing. I love the ice cream cones. I dunno, 40 - 50 quid?

Cattenberg · 18/08/2022 17:07

I definitely think it fits the brief! I’ve never had an ornate professional cake like that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it cost more than £50.

Floydthebarber · 18/08/2022 17:08

I'm not sure. £70+ for a professional baker but then I'd expect it to be presented on a cake stand. But it fills the brief for that type of cake perfectly.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 18/08/2022 17:08

Yes. If I’d ordered a cake on the brief chocolate heaven without supplying a pic, this would impress me and I’d happily pay the agreed amount. I’d expect that to be about £50 depending on size. I’d much prefer a huge cake with less decoration on it tbh but I know for lots of people “less is more” is an alien concept!

figmaofmyimagination · 18/08/2022 17:08

I think a few of those decorations (cone, donut, jaffa cakes) would go stale very quickly stuck on top like that, so that puts me off a bit tbh. I’d rather just have a normal cake. But I think lots of people would love it.

Coachwork · 18/08/2022 17:08

How big is it? If 8 inch I'd expect about £50 from an independent.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/08/2022 17:08

Depends on size and type of cake... I have a chocolate cake recipe that requires several bars of dark chocolate for example... thats a lot more expensive to make than a vanilla sponge. Plus butter etc is expensive now.

I would say £70ish which is why I bake rather than buy cakes from cake makers.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 18/08/2022 17:09

I think it fulfills the the brief as an over the top chocolate cake. Near me this would probably be around £60ish.

abovedecknotbelow · 18/08/2022 17:09

£80

GreenIsle · 18/08/2022 17:09

I don't think the ice cream cones are part of chocolate heaven to be honest it makes it look strange. However I would have expected to pay around £50 for this

Greensleeves · 18/08/2022 17:10

For those asking for context - I made it, and the person I made it for is insisting that they want to pay for it. I have no idea, so I thought I'd get a straw poll on what it was worth, and then charge them half of that amount (as I am NOT a professional, and it isn't presented on a cake stand etc)

SpiritedAway22 · 18/08/2022 17:10

It needs more cake. It's more overkill of random chocolate items which doesn't really take much effort.

Did you make it or are you buying it?

AyBeeCee · 18/08/2022 17:11

Round me that would cost £50-60.
But if I'd made it for a friend I'd only charge to cover costs

amylou8 · 18/08/2022 17:12

It's amazing, you're very clever. I'd expect to pay £50-60 for it.

ChickPeaChic · 18/08/2022 17:12

It’s very amateur, I’d pay £30 max if I’m honest and I say that as someone who regularly spends £100+ on professional cakes.

howmanyseas · 18/08/2022 17:12

Wow, OP! I wish I could casually knock together something like that! In fact I tried similar for one of my kids, thinking how hard can it be, and mine looked rubbish.

devildeepbluesea · 18/08/2022 17:13

For a professional cake I’d expect to pay around £70.

If you weren’t planning to take a payment, work out your costs and add a little more for time.

It’s great by the way.

It has six layers of cake, two vanilla, two strawberry and two chocolate (for a neapolitan effect), layered with jam and buttercream. 9 inch cakes.

Ohai Greeny, how you doing?

Def fills the brief. A cake like that made by a pro round here would be the thick end of 60 quid. Well done.
