The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

I think it looks fabulous and if that’s what I ordered I would be very happy. Not idea on prices but it looks very fashionable

Georgeskitchen · 18/08/2022 18:09

@Trinity65 not just meow, that's meow with claws out 🤣🤣🤣

Bananasalad · 18/08/2022 18:09

I'd charge cost of ingredients, there must be about £20 as a rough estimate and add £20 for the love and time it took me to make it.
£40 ish.

It looks lovely but can't imagine cutting into it. Would end up with a huge mess.

Badger1970 · 18/08/2022 18:12

OP it's a gorgeous cake, and must have taken ages to decorate. The tight wads are out in force on MN tonight!!

I'd charge £35 at least if it's for a friend - our cleaner makes cakes as a sideline and she'd charge around £120 for that one. And hers look amazing but never taste that nice (but I'd never tell her that).

Viviennemary · 18/08/2022 18:12

Not keen. Far far too fussy. Maybe about £10.

AlbaDT · 18/08/2022 18:13

I have a colleague who makes incredible cakes and she just charges us £20 for ingredients.

I think it looks great by the way.

Julia234 · 18/08/2022 18:13

£35-40

Bordesleyhills · 18/08/2022 18:14

Would say £45 to friends- it’s lovely

marylou25 · 18/08/2022 18:14

Work out the costs correctly, boring but can be eye opening, I'd be surprised if it only cost 20 quid for everything, electricity is far from free too! It's an eye opener too to 'customers' to know what something costs to make without ever including costs for labour. Ideally your friend should pay costs and give you a gift voucher for something or other, more clear cut than accepting money for baking when not a business.

sunglassesonthetable · 18/08/2022 18:14

That makes a wow statement especially when it's cut to reveal neapolitan stripes.
Someone will be delighted with that ! Would look fab on a stand in the middle of a table.

I'd say £50 -£60 with all the layers. If it was for mates I'd just charge ingredients.

Great job OP.

frozenorangejuice · 18/08/2022 18:15

Looks absolutely brilliant OP! Definitely fits the brief. I just bought a cake for my DC birthday and paid £80 - I would say this is in the region of £50 - £80 depending on time taken and cost of ingredients. If this isn’t your day job - it could be!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/08/2022 18:15

I think I'll say £20, that'll cover the ingredients

If you do, and it's for someone close, make it very clear that you're doing it for that price purely because of the relationship; otherwise you'll be deluged by others who want the same at a giveaway price (I speak from experience)

I'll be honest that it's not really my personal thing, but for the brief it's pretty well ideal and will certainly have taken you a lot of time - and time costs money

Come to think of it you'll probably be deluged anyway, so best learn to say "no" now

hotfroth · 18/08/2022 18:15

Greensleeves · 18/08/2022 17:17

That's the issue, I didn't want to charge anything, but the person I made it for is insisting...I think I'll say £20, that'll cover the ingredients.

I think that is more than fair. Earlier you said maybe charge 50% and I'd probably only want to pay £40 at most for it, because any more than that I'd think I would just make a cake and decorate it myself.

It would have gone down an absolute storm at my dd's birthday parties when she was 9-12ish. I wouldn't say no to a slice myself.😍

Rockbird · 18/08/2022 18:16

I'd expect to pay about £80 for that, going by what I have paid for cakes here.

Pbbananabagel · 18/08/2022 18:17

£60-70 from a professional on a cake stand, it looks amazing OP

JustLurkingAway · 18/08/2022 18:17

OP that looks brill!

I'd say £50-£60 generally, £20 sounds good if that covers your ingredients

ouch321 · 18/08/2022 18:17

If you weren't being paid for it why did the customer /not-a-customer give you a brief?

Bimblybomeyelash · 18/08/2022 18:17

It looks great OP! I think if you charge £20 then make that VERY clear that it’s just covering the ingredients, and not your time! But I think if you don’t want to charge the REAL price, including your time, then you should refuse payment and just say for them to buy you a bottle of wine/plant/whatever as thanks.

OwlInBoots · 18/08/2022 18:18

Looks good to me! For a friend, I'd think £20-30 e about right as it's mates rates. Otherwise , £40- 50

Galaxyinmypocket · 18/08/2022 18:19

It's very good for someone who is not doing this professionally. I have done cake baking/decorating before for friends and family as gifts, some very intricate designs.

The effort is huge, timing, ensuring it tastes right, looks right etc. I think it's great!

Charge them at least 40, that's for ingredients and the cost of fuel and your time.

MyHusbandIsaRightTwatButILoveHim · 18/08/2022 18:20

I'd be over the moon if someone made that for me!
As you say £20 to cover the cost of ingredients
It's a proper over indulgent delight and well done for making it

(I'd like to be your friend!) 🤣🤣

Ilikecake05 · 18/08/2022 18:22

I own a bakery and we make luxury wedding and celebration cakes. It looks like it fits the brief and looks great but I wouldn’t pay for it as it’s sitting on a plate and I would expect it to be on a cake drum. This tells me the baker of the cake isn’t a professional, most likely doesn’t have their house registered with environmental health and doesn’t pay taxes on their self employed income. If it was a family member making it as a favour I’d think covering costs and maybe a gift for their time would be sufficient.

I think it’s wonderful when people make cakes for family members.

As for price, if it was made in my shop it would be £125 for that size (6 layers 9”). You can bet it would cost us around £40 in ingredients alone. people happily pay for them. I wouldn’t 😂

sunglassesonthetable · 18/08/2022 18:22

Not keen. Far far too fussy. Maybe about £10.

🙄 yep £10...
