@TrashPandas absolutely fine if you are a part-time or hobby writer. Not so easy when it’s your full-time profession and have deadlines you need to meet.

What’s a “part time” or “hobby” writer? Of the 30+ published authors I know, every single one of us has a paid job, either full-time or working more than that as a freelancer. Unless you’re one of a handful of major, major authors, even bestselling authors have other income streams. Are they “hobby” writers?

Also, JM sounds like an absolute nightmare to manage, deadline-wise.

@TrashPandas What? That’s the whole point. So much speculation and nobody knows for sure what her situation is. I’ll probably get attacked just for saying that. I genuinely wonder what motivates you to spend your day trashing someone you don’t know on social media. It can’t be the best use of your time.

It's not merely speculation. People have the receipts.

I tried a couple of her recipes when we were at a very low financial ebb . . . they really were dreadful! Wasted ingredients because they were actually inedible.

Bernadine Lawrence "Feed your Family" and Jpcasta Innes (I think) "The Pauper's Cookbook" - that's where to look. Or even Jamie Oliver's basic Cookbook (can't remember the title - he effectively teaches people to cook in it).

I swear by That Mans Jamie's Ministry of food for good, easy, basic cooking, for anyone.

JohnsShirt · 04/08/2022 18:06

Jack's recipe for tomato soup:
First, take a tin of tomato soup.
Yer fucking what now, and this is beating food poverty?

She tweeted: “I’ve cried in supermarkets plenty in the last 10 years. Putting back jam that had crept up by sixpence, meaning SB and I faced a week of bone dry toast. Trying to work out what to put back, what to do without, out of a tenner’s worth of groceries that weren’t enough to start with.

“I’ve cried tears of humiliation when a shelf-edge label turned out to be advertising an expired promotion, tipping my shopping over what I could afford from the six pounds or so in change – the only money I had in the world – in my hand.

“And today I cried, quietly, to myself, in Asda, as the enormity of all of the last few weeks finally sank in among all the white labels in my shopping basket.

Quitelikeit · 04/08/2022 18:23

I can hardly believe this stuff. How can one only live on dry toast all week? Surely you would talk to your child’s father? Was he paying maintenance? Grandparents? Food banks? School lunches?

dry toast all week is about £1 ish

even on benefits, you are left with more than a £1

thing is if this all doesn’t add up why are none of the big newspapers calling it out?

it would be interesting to snap her shopping trolley today

NotHerRealNames · 04/08/2022 18:40

Has she responded to how she spends her Patreon?

This is bonkers. If I was in that situation, even once, then every single piece of designer gear I owned would be on ebay and I would not be in a 3/4 bed cottage with detached studio.

Also the myth that you can live on £20 a week as a single parent with a growing child plays directly into the right wing rhetoric that all poor people are just bad with money and can’t cook and JM should absolutely be binned off for perpetuating it.

@Motorcycleemptyness The first time I ever heard of her was about 10 years ago when someone on here linked to a horrible blog post she’d written about obese people claiming they couldn’t afford to eat healthily on a low income.

It was a real angry rant about laziness and how if she and her child could eat healthily on £10 a week then so could these fat ignorant people! She could help them but they had to want to change.

She deleted it after the backlash on this thread and presumably elsewhere. There’s no trace of it online now.

It came across as snobby and judgmental but at least she knew what she was talking about if she and her son were living that well on a £10 a week food budget, right? 😬

I knew I wasn’t imagining it. Her blog post was deleted but the MN thread is still there.

Probably contains heritage potatoes, a bottle of champers and a duck she found in a puddle.

Swan, not duck.

When he son was small why didn’t she say to his wonderful supportive dad, can I have an extra £5/10 this week, or ask to go round for tea. Why not go to her mums and borrow stuff from the cupboard, or go round for tea.
Everything is always the extreme, literally the poorest person with no support at all she can go to. I’ve never believed it.

Clymene · 04/08/2022 20:11

Unless her family were really abusive (and she has never said they are), I don't understand why a woman from a wealthy middle class family was not feeding her child properly.

Clymene · 04/08/2022 20:11

Unless her family were really abusive (and she has never said they are), I don't understand why a woman from a wealthy middle class family was not feeding her child properly.

I’ll defend her in this to somebody extent (god knows why!) and say that some of the things she’s tweeted in previous years at least indicate that her parents and grandfather, whilst she had a good relationship with them, more or less told her they were disappointed and thought she was throwing her life away by continuing with an unplanned pregnancy so young whilst in a short relationship which was unlikely to work out (as it didn’t.) So I can understand why she may then have felt too proud to go cap in hand to them to feed him.

I think most of rest of what she says is pure bollocks, but that she did have a (albeit relatively short) period of real financial difficulty when her son was small and felt she had to push through it alone I do believe.

I'm desperate for her to take it to court.
"I've been libelled, awful things have been said about me, it's come from.....Me, my own account"
Jack Monroe vs Jack Monroe.

JubileeTrifle · 04/08/2022 20:31

She can’t sue. They would have to look at her bank accounts. She can’t have that.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/08/2022 20:36

I had a look at Twitter earlier. My word. Why do some people equate being credulous with being kind?

FictionalCharacter · 04/08/2022 21:02

EsmaCannonball · 04/08/2022 13:25

Nope, her own contradictions still aren't being explained away.

Also Monroe is famous as a cook. If you watch television cookery shows you'll see that it's one of the few areas where working class people can succeed and make a name for themselves. As she's already well-known she has so many avenues open to her. Why not do some, you know, actual cookery?

I’m actually starting to think she doesn’t have much skill as a cook. She messed up when she tried to do it live on tv. People like Jamie Oliver are trained experienced chefs so the techniques are second nature. Thinking back to her old tweets she used to say things like she’d been up until 3am all week testing recipes, and there was something off about it. She’d say things like she tried 100 different versions of it because she’s such a perfectionist, which seemed very unlikely. And there was never a big reveal of the final perfected item. I think at least some of these recipes are purely theoretical and she hasn’t really made them.

Her ability is the meticulous costing of ingredients and meals that she does, down to the last spoonful of oil and half tin of tomatoes. I no longer believe she has much if any skill in creating a good recipe.

They don’t want to lose face. How humiliating would it be to admit you’ve been conned?

Her costings are actually off, tbh. If you look at some of the stuff she's posted/tweeted and her portion sizes, they wouldn't satisfy a goldfish let alone, say, a family of four with growing kids. If you watch her Lorraine Super Savers segment (and I don't recommend it), she also uses things like 'a pinch of chilli = 3p'. You can't go to Asda and buy a 'pinch of chilli', you have to buy the whole jar or already have it in the cupboard. Her recipes often assume you already have this stuff in the cupboard, which a lot of people on a budget won't.

Motorcycleemptyness · 04/08/2022 21:30

AM is tweeting again - they’re really not letting this one go. The evidence when presented like this - back to back tweets (such as the ‘I’ve lost all my work coz of covid and I’m panicking about money here’s my begging bowl’ vs two weeks later ‘no big deal here’s two weeks of me on the telly’) is really really hard to ignore.

I don’t know how JM is going to come back from this, professionally. Even the most die-hard fan must be scratching their head thinking wtf now.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/08/2022 21:45

I've never paid much attention to Monroe but I'm going down a rabbit hole now. It doesn't look great.

Some people think AM is Katie Hopkins but s/he clearly isn't.
