The Tories only care about pensioners, the people who vote for them. Mainly retired middle class white folks from the south east .

They’ve always been in favour of curtailing workers’ rights. Thatcher had a right old purge in the 80s. Basically they follow the money so I think the people they really care about are their donors, the City and high income earners. They certainly didn’t care about pensioners when they shafted the WASPI women.

GreenLunchBox · 27/07/2022 12:10

What I don't understand is that Thatcher is one of the most hated PMs in our history yet both candidates are running on a "Ill be like Thatcher" ticket. Especially as we are already seeing inflation/strikes etc that we saw in that era. It's almost like the Tories don't give a fuck about what the average man on the street wants

antelopevalley · 27/07/2022 12:12

@GreenLunchBox they are appealing to Conservative party members who still look up to Thatcher.

Blossomtoes · 27/07/2022 12:31

It’s almost like having created all this mess they want to lose the next election and leave someone else to clean up after them …

OneFrenchEgg · 27/07/2022 15:04

Very much enjoying the handholding given to the fainting host. What a gent. 😂 although a bit of first aid may have been more useful.

Sporty2022 · 27/07/2022 16:44

Thatcher her was divisive , she was hated north of Birmingham.
But still won elections even after being so unpopular.
Let’s look at recent history. The Tories have been imposing austerity and taking away workers rights since 2010.
But they’ve won three general elections since then, albeit in 2017 Theresa May lost a majority.

The Tories keep getting voted in, which means either people like having austerity imposed on them or Labour are so shit they they can’t win an election.

Sporty2022 · 27/07/2022 16:56

People need to wake up and looks what’s going on. The Tories have been trying to ban strike action for years.
Sunak even smiled about making strike action illegal.
This isn’t just about the railway workers, or indeed nurses or teachers. They want to make it difficult for any organisation to strike, many are low paid blue collar workers who work in factories.
Liz Truss now wants to give police forces targets to cut crime if she becomes PM.The same political party who got rid of 20000 police officers and about 7000 prison officers. The party who supposedly are about law and order.

Meanwhile Matt Hancock is on LBC, singing Sunaks praises. The same Hancock who told everyone to stay at home and protect the NHS, who all the while was having an affair with one of his staff members.

The vile little man Cummings , the architect of Brexit and the lockdowns, who also broke the rules. This man was the PMs advisor.

Yet people still vote them in.

chaosmaker · 29/07/2022 14:55

Why do they keep voting them in? Those voters are just as culpable. If you're a union member though, where are you supposed to turn? Starmer's trying to lead a 'tory party but with morals' (no such thing) as he is against the unions too. When I asked why people vote for them on a different thread I got torn apart.... No accounting for stupidity I suppose.

Have some hope!

I'm finding more and more that Tory voters are turning away from them, they want a change and Truss and Sunak aren't it.

I think if they'd gone for Wallace (if he had stood) or Tugenhet i think the Tories would have very quickly reversed their polling woes.

balalake · 29/07/2022 15:52

@chaosmaker last time voted in because of being sick of Brexit not happening, and not wanting a former IRA sympathiser as an alternative.

Labour lost in 2019 as much as the Tories won.

AndreaC74 · 29/07/2022 15:55

Was Corbyn? or was he the victim of a very effective campaign?

After all the Queen shook hands with Martin McGuiness 2016.

Brexit agree.

IdiotCreatures · 29/07/2022 16:00

More Choice of Bread in Supermarkets than Political Parties=Absurdity!!

Elodie09 · 29/07/2022 16:05

It has been widely reported that Liz Truss had an affair. One article I read suggested that it had gone on for 18 months. So does this tell us anything about the sort of person she might be, to cheat on her partner for that long? I would not believe a word she said. I thought she was "willow the wispy - ish" before I learned that and can't believe she would be enough to convince the rest of the world to trust us. On anything.
I find it totally impossible to see her as a leader of anything.
I am no fan of Rishi either but I think he will win. The debates have been worse than useless.

Blossomtoes · 29/07/2022 16:10

I wish I agreed with you @Elodie09. Unfortunately I think Truss will get it. The Tory membership loves her and they won’t give a damn about her sexual morals.

Sporty2022 · 29/07/2022 19:24

Labour have been terrible for years. Corbyn was unelectable and people knew that.
Starmer isn’t saying or doing the right things to make me warm to him either.

I think the voting turnout for the next GE will be much lower next time.

Sporty2022 · 29/07/2022 19:26

Liz Truss spent strike me as leader material. More of a secondary school head of year at best. But she’s a yes woman and the Tories love that.

Sporty2022 · 29/07/2022 19:27

Liz Truss doesn’t strike me a leader material I meant

chaosmaker · 29/07/2022 23:55

I think at the least that voters should look at the voting records of their candidates and see if they voted for harmful policies. Also their expenses. I'm not a labour supporter either. Currently green and recently voted for Sharar Ali as deputy leader.

They didn't give a damn about Boris Johnson's sexual morals, and that was much more of a concern because it intruded on his public life (by giving government grants to his mistress Jennifer Arcuri).

In fact, leaving your moral viewpoint aside, you could argue that Liz Truss's affair is less problematic because it is public knowledge.

Elodie09 · 30/07/2022 09:57

@stuckdownahole I was making a comparison between Truss and Sunak, not Johnson. I think the whole world is aware of Johnson's morals. If Truss gets the vote she too will be our leader and seems to change her opinion depending on the company she is keeping at the time. However between the lot of them , what a delightful Tory party we have. Having read articles from the various press and media around the world I am still thinking it might be Sunak.

Sporty2022 · 30/07/2022 22:06

Terrible isn’t it. Sunak or Truss. I despair.
We need a general election, atleast the Tories would hopefully lose a majority and they’ll have to go back into a coalition.

BloodyCamping · 31/07/2022 11:43

If truss is in power the Tory’s will end their reign at the general election.

Sporty2022 · 31/07/2022 12:58

Starmer needs to be clear how labour would do things differently. I don’t think labour would win an election right now.

Sporty2022 · 31/07/2022 13:00

Worth remembering that although Corbyn was seen as bad news for labours last election, they also lost in 2015 with Ed Miliband as leader. Even after austerity with five years of the Tories.
Labour must be having a problem within their voters.
