Sunak vs Truss - Leaders debate
MarshaBradyo · 26/07/2022 09:21

I’m not talking about policies here as Sunak points in theory were mostly ok - although corporation tax lift not sure about -but delivery

I’ve noticed the sum up this morning is they interrupted each other, whereas it was Sunak was doing this, it’s a way to give more lenience to the male that does it

Mischance · 26/07/2022 09:27

It would be better to have 1:1 interviews with the candidates.

That is what is offered with Andrew Neil, but Truss has now refused out and Sunak agreed to go on.

I watched the whole debate. I was not impressed by either, although Sunak went down in my estimation more. He was so rude and arrogant . I wonder if he would have interrupted so frequently had either his opponent or the moderator been male?
On the other hand I was worried by Liz Truss's economic policy, she didn't inspire confidence that she knew what she was doing.
As I am not a member of the Conservative party I have no say but I don't think either of them did well.

I say this on every political thread that I read and no one ever responds but I will keep on saying it because maybe it makes people think.
We do not have a democracy
The system we have is not designed to help us
The system we have is seriously flawed.
There are more choices of bread in a supermarket than their are political parties to choose from.
In a country of over 60,000,000 people this system as it is, will never work for us.
We need a new system based around proportional representation with more direct democracy.

AGREED!

SpindleInTheWind · 26/07/2022 11:42

My driver in voting, if I had a vote, which I don't, would be to avoid the utter misery of rampant mortage inflation being inflicted on families who are just about hanging on and younger people who have only just managed to buy a basic flat.

But a landscape of mass repossessions suits a certain kind of economics, doesn't it?

Because Sunak's best mate is behind the interview, so I don't blame her

Did Rishi comes from humble beginnings it’s hard to tell? 🙄

I don’t think so, his parents did. He was educated at Winchester college, a posh school that costs a a lot of money.

Clawdy · 26/07/2022 12:50

His dad was a GP, and his mum a pharmacist, and he was privately educated from the start, so not exactly a working class background!

chaosmaker · 26/07/2022 13:07

WhyNott · 25/07/2022 21:11

Is it just me that thought they were cardboard cut outs when the camera zoomed in on them at the beginning? 😂

I thought that too and then sunak's mouth moved. Very creepy. He lost standing I think by talking over everyone else including the 2 from the BBC. Wonder if it's an inadequacy thing. The rapid fire answers at the end were worrying too.

shadypines · 26/07/2022 13:17

Sunak very good at telling us about what he's done in past lives, not so great at saying what his PM plans are.
The fact that he can't listen without interrupting as depressing too.
Mason going on about suits and earrings, give me strength.

What is most worrying is that he seems to think that this makes him relatable, 'I came from nothing' whereas having been brought up in driving poverty, GP's always seemed a world of fairytale riches...

Sporty2022 · 26/07/2022 17:38

They both said they’d ban striking for public services. Meaning railways, but did they also mean teachers etc?
Anyone else worried that they want to ban industrial action?

2bazookas · 26/07/2022 17:43

OneFrenchEgg · 25/07/2022 21:09

I love that she's wearing blue. This is brilliant fun.

I swear Margaret Thatcher had a blue dress just like it. Didya spot the tiny power- shoulders?

Serves Rishi right for pretending he's channeling MT .

V4Vienetta · 26/07/2022 17:43

Yes @Sporty2022 I am really worried they both said they would ban railways and other public sector strikes. Really worrying, another way we are losing our civil liberties seem to be shrinking by the day

V4Vienetta · 26/07/2022 17:44

Doctors are all middle class to me!

Yes that was a really bizarre bit. There’s no way they can deliver this. It’s cloud cuckoo land stuff.

Also, there’s this thing called Work To Rule that can be brought into the mix.

They actually make me feel more supportive of public sector strikers not less with their delusional political smuggery.

Sporty2022 · 26/07/2022 20:01

Well Sunak said it was in the manifesto to ban striking for essential services… surely no trade union would allow this ? Wouldnt this also be against the law?

Sporty2022 · 26/07/2022 20:06

Truss is looking at taking the power away from unions. Surely no one wants to let the government actually do this, this is very worrying! I’d hope Keir Starmer and Labour would repel this.
Also, don’t alot of the trade unions fund Labour? It wouldn’t be in Labour’s interest to ban striking either would it?

Sporty2022 · 26/07/2022 20:09

Sorry again- Truss wants to make it more difficult for anyone to strike, not just the public sector.
I hope the TUC fight this otherwise what’s the point in any union?

Blossomtoes · 26/07/2022 20:53

What can the TUC - or anyone - do about it? This is a government with a 70 odd seat majority. Basically it can do whatever it likes.

Sporty2022 · 26/07/2022 21:08

But would have to pass through parliament?
I can’t believe people don’t seem bothered about having their civil rights taken away..

IdiotCreatures · 26/07/2022 22:52

We are led to be apathetic. To not care. To not go up in arms when the government breaks its own laws and rules that they decided upon.
They want us to struggle to survive, to be more concerned about how we will get our next meal, than to pay attention to their shannigans.
It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Yes a more diverse parliament would lead to more representation of extreme views but it could also be designed in such a way, they the people who are meant to be working on our behalf would actually do so.
Change is scary and no doubt would lead to things that we can't predict or account for.
But really could it be any worse than the nepotism and hypocrisy that currently exists behind a facade of meritocracy and democracy?
I don't know but I would like to give it a try.

Blossomtoes · 27/07/2022 09:45

Sporty2022 · 26/07/2022 21:08

I care enormously but there’s nothing any of us can do about it. Governments with huge majorities are dangerous as we’re seeing now. The Tories have a massive majority in Parliament and they vote like sheep whichever way they’re told.
