Which UK city do you think will host Eurovision?

In our house we are guessing either Manchester, because it has the Media City area, and has a reputation for being very vibrant and up and coming, or Cardiff because the waterfront would provide a beautiful backdrop and the Millenium center is right on the bay.

Nowhere near me, I hope.

Just listening now. The stadium needs to be available for a few weeks before with no gigs booked and Leeds fulfil that criteria. Also it’s the city of culture next year which may help.
Leeds Bradford airport is considered an international airport.

Probably not worded this correctly but.. Does it have enough flight paths to different countries though? Or could they divert planes especially for the occasion..

CTPT · 25/07/2022 15:27

It would be great if Leeds is the front runner, just not sure there's enough capacity at the arena to have fan parks like a PP mentioned?

I fail to see why anyone gets excited at this Festival of mediocrity.

Because I'm taking time off from analysing Proust

UK indoors venues with capacity over 10,000

Wales

  • none
  • SSE Arena, Belfast
Scotland
  • P&J Live, Aberdeen
  • OVO Hydro, Glasgow
England
  • O2, London
  • OVO Wembley, London
  • Utilitaria, Birmingham
  • Resorts World Arena, Birmingham
  • First Direct Arena, Leeds
  • M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool
  • AO Arena, Manchester
  • Utilitaria Arena, Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham
  • Sheffield Arena, Sheffield

Very sad that there is only place in the South of England with a suitable stadium is in London.

Delatron · 25/07/2022 16:35

@CTPT Yeah I assumed the airport wouldn’t be good enough at Leeds but they seemed to think it would be fine on the radio. However it’s definitely not as connected as other northern airports so could well let the bid down.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2022 16:37

From a practical point of view, rather than one intended to spark any bunfights, how is the cost of preparing for it covered? If a venue needs investment, I guess that comes out of the venues budget or local budget?

I'd hope Manchester is in with a shout. The arena is huge and there is another being built but a quick google suggests it's not ready until Christmas 2023.
I am near Manchester myself and think it would be great for the city to host but I think it would be great if it goes anywhere other than London. Glasgow and Cardiff should be in with a shout too. Birmingham less likely perhaps only because it's been there before.

also it has a train from Manchester airport. I think the city of culture thing could well help.

But Manchester has enormously more flights (yes it it shit I know). And hotel rooms. I think the hotel rooms thing will be a v important factor tbh. You've got to put everyone somewhere.

KnittingNeedles · 25/07/2022 16:48

I guess they'd be looking for a venue which is ready to go - like the one in Manchester or Glasgow. There really isn't time to start upgrading as it would need to be finished by end of April and they couldn't risk it not being done. They are asking all the cities who have expressed an interest to put together a bid saying how they would do it NOW without needing to invest/upgrade.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/07/2022 16:50

DelilahBucket · 25/07/2022 14:38

One of the criteria is that it must be near to an international airport. One would assume that airport needs a decent flight schedule for all the countries involved, so that's quite a lot of places rules out My money is on Manchester but it would be nice to see Wales or NI getting to do it.

Manchester Airport is a reason not to have it in Manchester.😂😂😂

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/07/2022 16:52

I don't think Bristol has a venue large enough. The hangers where Concorde was built is to be converted into a 17000 seat arena, but it's not due to be completed until 2024.
I think somewhere central like Birmingham would be ideal.

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 25/07/2022 16:57

Exactly. Manchester airport is nasty.

There are lots of hotels in Leeds!

Wasn't the paying the cost of hosting it the reason why Iceland didn't want it, in that weird film, "Fire and ice"?

Chubarubrub · 25/07/2022 17:20

Definitely not Cardiff. Even though a roof can be put on the Millenium Stadium as someone who is from that area, Cardiff can’t even cope with traffic and people on international rugby match days. Getting in and out of the city is a nightmare it becomes a gridlock. Plus unfortunately it doesn’t have the hotels.

BlueThursday · 25/07/2022 17:36

i think Manchester might be easiest for people and I say this as a Glaswegian.

rhe train in and out of the airport is something Glasgow doesn’t have.

the Hydro would be a great venue for it though and is literally across the road from the BBC

KnittingNeedles · 25/07/2022 17:40

Well, across the river.

And yes, Iceland not being able to afford the hosting was the whole plot of the Fire Saga movie. Parts of which were filmed at the Hydro in Glasgow. It's destiny.

(Ya Ya Ding Dong)

gogohmm · 25/07/2022 17:40

The requirement is for a major airport nearby, only Manchester, Birmingham and London really fit the criteria in England possibly Nottinghamas not that far from Birmingham (Bristol is apparently interested but I can testify they fly to nowhere you want to go!)

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/07/2022 17:42

I hope it's Birmingham as don't live far

gogohmm · 25/07/2022 17:43

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Bristol is getting an arena, 2 years late so far (due to covid) and not scheduled to open in time

gogohmm · 25/07/2022 17:44

Cardiff has the millennium stadium - has a retractable roof!

Scepticalwotsits · 25/07/2022 17:44

Notringham would be most central,

other than London Birmingham they most connected and probably the most geared up to support it.

but would like to see it go to Belfast

And I really hope Glasgow gets it

I agree if they want an airport in that city those make the most sense, but as you say Birmingham-Nottingham would be an hour, and Manchester-Leeds also an hour so they may be considered (not sure about other cities and there proximity to airports!)
