Which UK city do you think will host Eurovision?

In our house we are guessing either Manchester, because it has the Media City area, and has a reputation for being very vibrant and up and coming, or Cardiff because the waterfront would provide a beautiful backdrop and the Millenium center is right on the bay.

The AO Arena is a bit of a pain with security.

Understandable, of course, but there were considerable queues there, and they favour efficient running of the event.

There's also the question of fan zones. Eurovision these days comes with a free fan park in the host city. This was Parco Valentino in Milan - it has to be a huge venue to host big screen viewings.

marcopront · 25/07/2022 14:23

@MaggieFS

No, you can't, because it calls itself the NEC Birmingham.

It calls itself NEC Birmingham, not the NEC in Birmingham. Subtle difference and I accept it is pedantic.

Livpool · 25/07/2022 14:26

I'd (obviously) like it to be Liverpool 😂 but I think it would be good for it to be in Scotland or NI as England always gets to host events

@bubblescoop - why should it be England?! I think that is a weird response to be honest

Livpool · 25/07/2022 14:29

Or Wales! I didn't think they had a large enough venue...

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 25/07/2022 14:31

Manchester, Leeds, Brum or Cardiff. From a purely selfish point of view Glasgow and Belfast would be a pain in the arse for me to travel to and cost more to get there. I'd be surprised if it's London, I think Eurovision decision peeps would rather go further afield. And although it would be quite convenient to get to for me, I don't think Bristol will get it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/07/2022 14:32

There's prep work for a massive venue being built on the gateshead Quayside which is set to replace the utilita arena. Possibly they will expedite the build if ot seems possible they could host.

AbleCable · 25/07/2022 14:34

Belfast SSE Arena has a capacity of 11,000.

I vote for Belfast!

DelilahBucket · 25/07/2022 14:38

One of the criteria is that it must be near to an international airport. One would assume that airport needs a decent flight schedule for all the countries involved, so that's quite a lot of places rules out My money is on Manchester but it would be nice to see Wales or NI getting to do it.

dreamingbohemian · 25/07/2022 14:38

While it would be boring to have it in London, if they are looking to attract lots of European visitors then London is the easiest to travel to, especially for any Ukrainians who wish to come (and remember we are only hosting on behalf of Ukraine)

Otherwise I expect they will go with Manchester, though personally I'd pick Glasgow

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 25/07/2022 14:39

Manchester airport is shit.

If not Blackpool then Glasgow!

Unhomme · 25/07/2022 14:41

I think Belfast would be a good shout. 2023 is the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and the country has come a long way in those years.

Also, on the music side, Belfast was awarded UNESCO City of Music status in 2021...

DownNative · 25/07/2022 14:42

Cities currently in the running:

Belfast, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham, Aberdeen, London, Brighton, Cardiff, Glasgow and Manchester.

Belfast would be a great choice and a first time too.

Delatron · 25/07/2022 14:44

@OhYouBadBadKitten

I didn’t catch all of it about Leeds. There was a guy making a strong case for it on the radio so I was sold. But not sure how strong the other cities are in the running.

DownNative · 25/07/2022 14:45

Titanic Quarter would also be a perfect site for the fanzones which it was during Northern Ireland's Euro 2016 tournament appearance.

SemperIdem · 25/07/2022 14:50

As mentioned the Principality Stadium seats 74,500 and the roof can be closed. Takes half an hour.

eniledam · 25/07/2022 14:52

Liverpool would be a fab choice. The Bank Arena holds 11,000, it has an international airport, and a long musical history perfect for Eurovision. Plus it's a super welcoming city (and not that far away for me to be able to go) 😁

SwedishEdith · 25/07/2022 14:54

Manchester or Liverpool. The cities are so close that the airports work for both as well.

NotReallyTheVicar · 25/07/2022 14:57

I fail to see why anyone gets excited at this Festival of mediocrity.

Allmarbleslost · 25/07/2022 14:57

Birmingham makes sense but if it's been there twice before I guess it may not get it again.

I fail to see why anyone would be interested in your opinion on it then.

Manchester airport is shit.

If not Blackpool then Glasgow!

Leeds Airport is even more shit. 😁

@NotReallyTheVicar I fail to see why you would choose to post your enlightening comment on a thread about Eurovision

MidnightMeltdown · 25/07/2022 15:08

Birmingham I reckon

KnittingNeedles · 25/07/2022 15:08

Whichever city gets the Eurovision is set to earn ££££. 10,000 people needing fed, hotel rooms, drinks, taxis etc etc etc.

Good news for any economy.

Delatron · 25/07/2022 15:14

Just listening now. The stadium needs to be available for a few weeks before with no gigs booked and Leeds fulfil that criteria. Also it’s the city of culture next year which may help.
Leeds Bradford airport is considered an international airport.
