Which UK city do you think will host Eurovision?

In our house we are guessing either Manchester, because it has the Media City area, and has a reputation for being very vibrant and up and coming, or Cardiff because the waterfront would provide a beautiful backdrop and the Millenium center is right on the bay.

I just hope it's only the venue and infrastructure we are adding to this Eurovision. Everything else-the hosts, the culture, all the things that go along with it should be Ukrainian.

I'd also like to see tickets offered first to refugees and families who have hosted them.

bravotango · 25/07/2022 18:13

Didn't Liverpool win the unofficial popular vote!? I'd vote Liverpool or Glasgow personally

Delphigirl · 25/07/2022 18:20

Glasgow. They will tweak and run the processes they had in place for COP which was a recent and comparable well-run massive international event. Will suit the BBC. Not Birmingham as it is on top of the commonwealth games - too soon. Those who would be organising it will be totally involved with the games and it’s aftermath in the next few weeks.

GellerYeller · 25/07/2022 18:38

@Delatron Milennium Square hosts large outdoor events and is maybe five minutes walk from the FD arena although I guess Manchester has similar space, plus Castlefield Bowl which isn't far from Media City. Maybe that makes logistics easier for the BBC?

Hbh17 · 25/07/2022 19:04

I went to the Manchester Arena a couple of months ago for a concert, and it was truly horrible - I wouldn't go there again if you paid me, and it would not create a good impression for European visitors. Liverpool would be much better.

Definitely not Cardiff. Even though a roof can be put on the Millenium Stadium as someone who is from that area, Cardiff can’t even cope with traffic and people on international rugby match days. Getting in and out of the city is a nightmare it becomes a gridlock. Plus unfortunately it doesn’t have the hotels.

exactly, ed sheeran breaks cardiff every time he comes, we can't cope with eurovision! and cardiff airport is in no way big enough, neither probably is bristol. plus if they want c.10k capacity the principality is way too big. They are now building a 17,000 stadium in the bay so maybe put cardiff down if we win after 2030 or whenever it'll be finished! (at which point they may have actually built cardiff parkway station to help with demand too!)

NCHammer2022 · 25/07/2022 20:11

I’d love Newcastle but it’ll probably be Manchester.

Manchester airport is shit.

If not Blackpool then Glasgow!

You're calling Manchester Airport shit but backing Blackpool in the same post, hilarious!

I don't mind a quick trip to Blackpool for some half decent chips, sometimes a ride on the big one but Jesus, it's the definition of shit

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 25/07/2022 20:36

It also has the tower ballroom which is a venue worthy of Eurovision

LilacLaurel · 25/07/2022 21:43

It also has the tower ballroom which is a venue worthy of Eurovision

Now that would be wonderful

MrsCobbit · 25/07/2022 21:47

Belfast

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/07/2022 23:34

The Mayor of Bristol was on Points West (local BBC news) tonight expressing an interest in holding it at the new proposed new arena at Filton. Just one problem- Filton is in South Gloucestershire, not Bristol City Council area.

RoseAndRose · 26/07/2022 06:34

The contest is next April/May isn't it?

So I think that only arenas that already exist will be in the running.

And I suspect it will be an indoor arena, not a closed-top stadium (very different 'feel' between the two)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2022 06:44

I cant see how a closed top stadium would give the same effect as an indoor space.

What size venue is needed?

When UK has hosted before, the venues have been:

  1. London, Royal Festival Hall
  2. London, BBC TV Centre
  3. London, Royal Albert Hall
  4. Edinburgh, Usher Hall
  5. Brighton, Brighton Dome
  6. London, Wembley Conference Centre
  7. Harrogate, Harrogate International Centre
  8. Birmingham, National Indoor Arena

I think it should be in Wales or NI

I looked at this list and thought it would/should be Wales, since it hasn't been hosted there yet.

Caspianberg · 26/07/2022 06:58

I think they will use the O2 in London.

Its set up as a huge music venue primarily, you have multiple London airports to fly into, it’s also closest to dover/ Folkestone for anyone driving which many contestants ‘staff’ may do with equipment needed for convenience.
You obviously have lots of accommodation, public transport for the thousands and food venues.

balalake · 26/07/2022 07:09

I think Glasgow or Manchester. Unless the Ukranians who will co-host the show have a say, they might prefer London.

sandgrown · 26/07/2022 07:12

Blackpool actually has its’ own airport. Would love to see it here! Surely the final decision should be made by the Ukrainians as it’s their final? I assumed they would be presenting the show but just using a British venue .

Drivebye · 26/07/2022 07:13

Who is paying for this?

RoseAndRose · 26/07/2022 07:15

Yes, I think O2 has to be a strong contender (it re-opened after the storm damage back in Feb - only took a couple of weeks to repair)

Proximity to Eurostar might be a factor, not only might it be preferred by some but also it's greener transport

Backtothenineties · 26/07/2022 07:24

Who decides where it is going to be held?

SpindleInTheWind · 26/07/2022 07:30

Backtothenineties · 26/07/2022 07:24

Who decides where it is going to be held?

I hope to god Nadine 'Sherbert Lover' Dorries isn't still in Cabinet to start interfering with it. She'll be gone from Culture by then, won't she?

In my nightmares, Liz Truss becomes PM and appoints Michael Fabricant who announces the winner wearing an Abba costume.

Freysimo · 26/07/2022 07:36

I can't see it being Cardiff. Road links are terrible (gridlock at the recent Ed Sheeran concert) and third world airport.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 26/07/2022 07:42

I assume the BBC decides, heavily influenced by the government, assuming we have one by the time the decision is needed.

hareandrabbit · 26/07/2022 07:46

I think it will be Glasgow but my choice would be NI.
