Yes I think so. This is the nature of Tory.

tobee · 04/08/2022 16:25

Or, at least, the nature of Tory now.

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2022 16:32

And both the PM and Chancellor are on holiday, another thing that doesn't change

tobee · 04/08/2022 17:13

God I can't even remember offhand who the chancellor is. When they were announced I assumed (hoped) they wouldn't be in place for more than a few hours!

Oh god now I've remembered

Grammar schools are like black holes, they distort the discourse about education around them. I’ve lived and worked in grammar school areas and it’s very difficult to combat the entrenched views as to what constitutes a good education (As and A stars at GCSE and A level) and good educational outcomes (Oxbridge or at a pinch Russell group university entrance), despite the fact that these are not realistic or suitable achievements for the vast majority of students, who mostly go on to have happy and productive lives regardless.

Agree.

My ds has autism and a physical disability. State school with ehcp was hard enough. But he's intelligent and not very academic. Think severely dyslexic as a presentation but deemed due to his difficulties writing and his language.

He won't manage uni. He certainly wouldn't have managed a grammar school (if we had them) but is remaining at college to do a foundation degree.

That aside - he's working for a start up company he did a placement with during his t level at same college. The job he is doing and experience he's gaining will allow him to do jobs where he could earn c150k.

The Tory's though don't seem to see this. They seem to think you need a car gain type of education at certain types of school.

Despite all their claims of levelling up they never thought about basic funding of education for ALL but rather just a few schemes for those who were lucky enough to do well despite the odds.

Deals being struck...

Ian Duncan Smith as Chief Whip. Braverman as Home Sec.
Badenoch as Education Sec. ("Let's get rid of all those extra school staff and peripheral activities")
Patel to Chairman.
Kwarteng as Chancellor.
Clarke as Business Sec.
Sunak in Heath (remember all those useful US health care contacts he built up).

A Cabinet chock full of the ERG.
I do try to keep my online swearing to a minimum but we are fucked.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/19411420/iain-duncan-smith-liz-truss-chief-whip/

Fucking hell.

That would be a disaster.

Badenoch wants to do more damage to schools.

Braverman only thinks her Laurent's should have had immigration opportunities and no one else

And agree Sunak has too many USA contacts - in the private sector.

Mr Toes’ leadership ballot paper arrived this morning. Down the right hand side there’s a jagged red column with pictures of Starmer, Rayner and Thornberry, it’s captioned “These people want the keys to Downing Street”. It has an air of “Who the fuck do they think they are, don’t they know Downing Street’s ours?”.

He’s deeply unimpressed, “Cheap jibe” was his comment, followed by “And Truss will hand the keys over”.

You e hope of him being a convert yet Grin

newnamethanks · 04/08/2022 19:50

Oh ffs, it's a complete horror show. What a catalogue of hideousness. I've had more than enough of them. If only the majority of the country felt the same. Sadly, most of us seem to have chucked our brains out of the window. Grim.

GreenLunchBox · 04/08/2022 20:10

Anyone watching the Sky leadership debate?

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2022 20:22

I am but Truss is competing against background of bickering teenagers so I'm struggling to follow it.

Apparently she was very honest about regional boards Confused

TheABC · 04/08/2022 20:23

I visited my father in hospital today. He is (or was) a quintessential Tory - home owner, army, small state/self reliance etc.

I asked him about the leadership contest. His response was to point at his legs. One is amputated above the knee. The other has just had a knee operation. He said "it feels like a choice between my legs. One is better than the other, but neither of them works."

He would - reluctantly - vote for Sunak as least batshit crazy. He would not back the Tories in an election (as things stand today).

I am just standing back at the moment with popcorn. It's going to go from bad to diabolical. But when you know it's going to rain shit, you may as well manure the fields.

balalake · 04/08/2022 21:01

I think the Sun may be just winding people up, or Harry Cole has been fed information from his ex-girlfriend, one Carrie Johnson.

IDS as Chief Whip does not seem credible.

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2022 21:40

No huge surprises in the tv debate I don't think. Surprised to say that Sunak came across better (to me) then he had done previously. Format is, perhaps unavoidably, lightweight.

I'd have thought the chief whip role would not be suited to the Quiet Man Grin

I'm amazed that a disabled person votes Tory

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/08/2022 23:25

This government's track record when the shit hits the fan:
Afghanistan evacuation- defence secretary on holiday.
Economic cost of living crisis- hide, have a leadership contest so no-one takes responsibility.
More Economic crisis, interest rate rises- chancellor of the exchequer on holiday.

They don't give a shit.

Nero is fiddling while Rome burns.

TheABC · 04/08/2022 23:30

@GreenLunchBox, without going into great detail, his disability is recent. Having said that, he has long been furious about the state of the NHS and thinks we need to properly fund social care.

Political discussions gets interesting in our house!

GreenLunchBox · 04/08/2022 23:30

It is utterly ridiculous that we haven't heard a word from either of them.

the80sweregreat · 05/08/2022 03:34

The sky news leadership talks last night were ridiculous, Liz TrUss admitting to more U turns than your average skate board park and Rish! pretending to have biked around town as a young boy delivering meds to the 'working classes ' , all that was missing there was the hovis ad music. I've no doubt he did work for his parents, but I feel that a lot of this is slightly embellished for the masses considering he once said he hasn't any working class friends.
How I wished spitting image was still on tv as Rishi in a flat cap and bicycle clips would be funny.
Both of them are so desperate.

Roussette · 05/08/2022 06:08

Can anyone else remember previous leadership contests? Were they so full of bullshit as this one?

I've seen clips of Truss and ye gods, she does annoy me. Well done Kay Burley for pushing on the U turn on reducing pay outside London. But... just in BJ's mould, she refused to say she made a mistake and said she was 'misrepresented'. If she gets in we're just going to have more of the same. Lies Lies Lies.

For anyone that watched it... how did the audience seem to react?

This sums up Truss's U turns so far and she's not even in power! Her face is a picture

She is giving plenty of ammunition to opponents. If that's how she reacts in a leadership debate, imagine what would happen in an election with an audience that is not just Conservative.

She could not remember where her figure of £8.8 billion came from - a figure that could only be achieved if all public sector pay was taken into account

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/03/truss-plan-never-about-reducing-pay-of-public-sector-workers-says-lewis

"But when asked why the press release sent by Truss’s leadership campaign team stated that the measure could save up to £8.8bn a year, a figure correct only if public sector pay cuts were included, Lewis said: “The wording in there that’s important is the word ‘if’, that was not something that was ever proposed … Liz made it very clear yesterday this is not a policy that is being taken forward.”"

Ben Houchen, the Tory mayor of Tees Valley, said he had been left “speechless” and that there was was no way the figure could be achieved without pay cuts outside London that would hit levelling up.
“Actually speechless,” Houchen tweeted. “There is simply no way you can do this without a massive pay cut for 5.5 million people including nurses, police officers and our armed forces outside London. So much that we’ve worked for in places like Teesside would be undone.”
A spokesperson for Truss’s campaign said there had been a “wilful misrepresentation of our campaign”, although was unable to say what exactly was misrepresented
“Current levels of public sector pay will absolutely be maintained,” the spokesperson said. “Anything to suggest otherwise is simply wrong.

Notonthestairs · 05/08/2022 08:39

"For anyone that watched it... how did the audience seem to react? "

I thought the strongest reaction came when Truss started talking about Johnson's record. "Big calls right, made the vaccine" etc but "mistakes were made". But it was divided between those clapping agreement and pained expressions on some.

It was plain she knew full well where the 8.8 Bn would come from she just didn't want to talk about it. The important thing to her was that she'd rejected the policy. She couldn't explain why it was there in the first place.

balalake · 05/08/2022 08:44

Previous leadership contests were not like this. Last Tory one was about Brexit and little else, all the others were either MPs only or when in opposition, same with the Labour Party.
