More fantasy economics from Truss

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/01/liz-truss-plan-to-cut-11bn-in-whitehall-waste-ludicrous

"The most significant element of the plan is the introduction of regional pay boards, which she said would “tailor pay to the cost of living where civil servants actually work”. She claimed this would save up to £8.8bn.
Experts questioned whether the savings were feasible. Alex Thomas, programme director at the Institute for Government, said: “If you’re just talking about civil servants, that is ludicrous; it doesn’t add up at all. The whole [annual] civil service pay bill is around £9bn.”

And if she tried to impose regional pay - based on the cost of living - across the whole public sector, that would bring her into conflict with a lot of people at the time of increased living costs.

Bit rich of Truss to call Sturgeon attention seeking considering Truss' seemingly has a photographer on permanent standby.

She's got a nerve. This is her as Foreign Sec.

A review of the government’s official account on the photo-sharing platform Flickr reveals that since the day she took up the post, more than 700 pictures have been uploaded featuring Truss – an average of more than four-and-a-half a day, or about one photograph for every five hours in the job.Hmm

It's going to get much much worse if she wins

I gasped when I heard the comments about Sturgeon. I imagine she's hoping that Nicola won't be in the job for long and that she won't have much to do with her.
Cant bear Sturgeon and the huge damage she's doing. (which yes, agree with Liz, is self serving)

latesummervibes · 02/08/2022 08:10

Two separate polls have found the majority of Scots do not want to see a referendum by the end of 2023.
But that doesn't stop Sturgeon.

Notonthestairs · 02/08/2022 08:13

They always go for the civil service T&Cs. Again it's a nice easy fodder for certain Conservatives. They'll get a lovely thrill out of leftie lawyers challenging their right to change existing terms and conditions of employment.

I don't see plans to boost the economy however, nothing about growth (remember that?).

More waffle about being strong on the EU rather than cementing a good trading relationship with our neighbours (the worlds largest trading bloc).

If she can't handle a one on one debate with Sunak I don't see PMQs going well (aside from more grandiose statements with very little to back them up.)

Johnson Mark 2.

Notonthestairs · 02/08/2022 08:18

I don't understand how cutting pay of public service outside of London fits with levelling up either.

Roussette · 02/08/2022 08:28

It's hardly a wise comment then. It's pushing those towards Independence. If you ridicule Nicola Sturgeon, you ridicule the Scottish people, they voted her in!

Let's ignore all democratically appointed leaders... Nicola first, Mark will be next.

I assumed that Truss is jealous that Sturgeon is much more successful with her attention seeking leadership than Truss will ever be.

borntobequiet · 02/08/2022 08:31

Truss labelling Sturgeon an attention seeker is yet another example of her own lack of self awareness and insight. She’s a fantasist.

The Daily Mash is spot on, so I won’t apologise for linking to it once again. This is the state we’re in, where a satirical magazine sums up our leaders better than any normal publication.

"But we have increased spending on schools" said a DFE Spokesperson

That's what they will say - and yet no acknowledgement of the cost pressure on schools

I wonder what a school heating budget is now?
Food budget?
Price for any fuel they have to buy

the80sweregreat · 02/08/2022 08:39

I'm in Scotland at the moment and just saw on the local news what Truss said about NS!
Unbelievable.

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2022 09:22

Basically, she needs to learn synecdoche ( she did 'surprisingly well' in her English A level). If you call NS attention seeking and say she should be ignored, you basically say Scotland should be ignored.

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2022 09:30

JRM is repeating it on BBC breakfast

"Nicola Sturgeon it's very often wrong & she's always moaning..."

He has done it before when Johnson went on a visit, calling her 'moanalot'

going by threads, mn would agree with him

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2022 09:35

Truss goes for levelling down

Liz Truss says she’ll “save £8.8bn” by paying public workers less in poorer regions. This would start with new civil servants and “if it works” be extended to public sector workers, meaning £8.8bn comes from nurses/police/teachers etc in Sunderland paid less than ones in Surrey.

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2022 10:28

New analysis from @lukesibieta at @TheIFS shows the Government are on track to break their promise to "restore per pupil funding [for schools] to 2010 levels in real terms".

School funding in 2024/5 will still 3% lower, in real terms, than 2010. Since the war we've never come close to having a 15 year period where spending on schools was lower at the end than the beginning.

I agree but you can’t decide as PM to just ignore. a Head of state and publicly denigrate her. She’s an elected leader. It’s breathtaking arrogance.

Well, it wouldn't, would it? The clue is literally in the name of her (democratically elected) party.

Notonthestairs · 02/08/2022 11:03

I think complaining that opposition politicians "moan" when you've been a member of the biggest bunch of moaners in Parliament - the ERG - reeks of hypocrisy.

Not hugely surprising however. It takes a lot less effort to demean a single personality than it does to engage.

By all means they should challenge the SNP, show what is to be gained by staying in the Union, persuade voters by offering solid progressive policies, and stop treating Scottish Conservatives as a branch office. Conservatives should be looking to broaden their appeal. Surely they are making life more difficult for Scottish Conservatives?

I suppose membership are largely based in southern England and Truss is just feeding them what they want to hear.

It's all short term thinking - pretty much the theme of the leadership race.

HarrietPierce · 02/08/2022 11:05

latesummervibes · Hardly a majority
www.politics.co.uk/reference/scottish-independence-polls/

The latest monthly polling averages on Scottish independence show ‘No’ campaigners to have a narrow 2% lead over ‘Yes’ campaigners.
Excluding those who declare themselves to be undecided (currently around 5% of the electorate) the latest polling places the ‘No’ side at 51% and the ‘Yes’ side at 49%.
This compares with the position in the 2014 Independence referendum, when 55.3% of Scottish voters opposed plans for an Independent Scotland, with 44.7% voting in favour.
In what remains a very volatile polling situation, support for the pro independence side appears to have grown in June 2022 following Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement of her plan to hold an IndyRef2 vote in October 2023.

Notable recent polls
Further details of the latest voting intentions in relation to a Scottish independence referendum can be seen in the most recent individual polls:
Savanta Com Res
(Jun 30) which placed the Yes side on 49% and the No side on 51%, post adjusting for undecided voters.
Ipsos Mori (May 31) which placed the Yes side on 50% and the No side on 50%, post adjusting for undecided voters.
YouGov (May 23) which without don’t knows placed the Yes side on 45% and the No side on 55%, post adjusting for undecided voters.
Savanta Com Res (May 4) which placed the Yes side on 49% and the No Side on 51%, post adjusting for undecided voters.

Exactly. Huge numbers of us Scots don't want independence
She leads a government which is inefficient and riven with scandal. You lot just don't read about it.
